Why a Wirecast Overlay Disappears When You Switch Playlist Videos on YouTube Live

A Wirecast playlist switches shots, so an overlay tied to one video’s Shot Layers may disappear on the next clip. Check Live, layer placement, stacking and AutoLive.

First check Wirecast’s shot and layer composition. A Wirecast playlist switches between shots; if an overlay is part of one video shot’s Shot Layers, it may disappear when the playlist advances to a different shot. For a logo or lower third that should stay visible across clips, put it on a separate Main Shot Display layer above the video layer and keep that overlay layer live. This is the likely place to investigate, not a confirmed diagnosis of any particular project.

Find out whether the overlay disappears in Wirecast or only on YouTube

Watch Wirecast’s Live Broadcast Area while switching between playlist videos. The distinction determines what to check next:

  • Missing in Wirecast Live: Start with the shot, layer assignment, live state and stacking order in Wirecast.
  • Visible in Wirecast Live but missing from the YouTube stream: Investigate the output or connection path separately. The available documentation does not establish a specific YouTube-side cause for this symptom.

Wirecast’s Live view is the useful first checkpoint: something visible only in Preview has not necessarily been sent to the broadcast output.

Why switching playlist videos can remove a graphic

Telestream’s Wirecast 16.3 Windows User Guide describes switching to a playlist as the same as switching to any other shot. A graphic placed in a video shot’s Shot Layers is contained in that shot. Telestream says contained layers appear whenever their associated shot is triggered; a different playlist shot need not include that graphic.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Wirecast can also composite live shots across layers. In the guide, layer 1 is on top and layer 5 is at the bottom. So a graphic can disappear because it belongs only to the shot that ended, or because it is not live or is stacked beneath the video in the new composition.

Choose the right layer arrangement

Arrangement How it behaves Best suited to
Main Shot Display layer Lets you composite an element independently of another live layer, with layer order controlling what appears on top. A logo or lower third that should remain visible while playlist video shots change.
Shot Layers Builds a contained composite associated with a particular shot. A graphic that belongs only to one video or camera shot.

Telestream’s layer guidance summarizes the distinction: “Main Shot Display layers allow you to composite elements on the fly by turning them on and off independently, while Shot Layers let you build a contained composite that appears every time you trigger a single shot.”

Check the project and test a controlled switch

  1. Locate the graphic. Check whether it is inside the video shot’s Shot Layers or on its own Main Shot Display layer. If it should persist across clips, use the independent Main Shot Display arrangement.
  2. Check layer order. Make sure the overlay layer is above the video layer in the live composition; Wirecast’s documented stacking order places layer 1 above layer 5.
  3. Confirm what is live. With AutoLive enabled, selecting a shot sends it live. With AutoLive disabled, select the intended shot or layered combination in Preview and click Go. Check that the overlay layer remains live after the playlist advances.
  4. Switch between two clips while watching Live. Use the same project and observe whether the graphic disappears inside Wirecast itself. This controlled check can distinguish a composition issue from a problem later in the output path.

These controls are documented in Telestream’s Wirecast 16.3 Windows User Guide, Live Broadcast Production section, pages 107–108. Labels and controls can vary by Wirecast version and operating system, so check the guide or interface for the release you have installed.

If the graphic is still missing

  • It vanishes exactly when one playlist video changes to another: Recheck whether it was attached to the outgoing shot rather than kept on an independent live layer.
  • It is visible in Preview but not Live: Confirm the intended shot or layered combination was sent live. With AutoLive off, select it and click Go.
  • It is live but hidden behind video: Move the overlay above the video in the layer stack.
  • It remains visible in Wirecast Live but not on YouTube: Keep the investigation focused on output and connection behavior. YouTube describes the encoder as the application that sends the live output and says to enter the YouTube Live server URL and stream key into that application; that general setup information does not identify the cause of this overlay symptom. See YouTube Help: Go live with an encoder.

If you use Singular.live graphics, its Wirecast integration guidance also advises checking that the overlay has been taken on-air and that its Wirecast layer is above the video layers. That check applies only to a Singular.live source.
