You can run a continuous YouTube radio stream from a Linux VPS by feeding an authorized station audio source into Liquidsoap, adding a simple visual, and sending the encoded stream to YouTube Live. The VPS keeps the encoder online without a studio computer running around the clock; the right size and cost depend on your audio source, video settings, traffic needs, and hosting plan.
Plan the audio source and permissions first
Liquidsoap can manage internet-radio sources, playlists, jingles, and live shows, and its official overview includes an RTMP output example for YouTube Live. Choose the input pattern that matches your station rather than assuming every setup uses the same source: Liquidsoap’s official overview.
- Existing station stream: Use an authorized stream URL as Liquidsoap’s input. Check that you have permission to retransmit that feed on YouTube and that it remains reachable from the VPS.
- Live studio feed: Send audio from the studio to a source the VPS can receive. Plan how the feed will reach the server and what should happen if it disconnects.
- Station-owned playlist or automation: Have Liquidsoap play the station’s authorized files, schedules, jingles, and other programming. This gives the station control over the material and can serve as fallback programming if a live contribution is unavailable.
If the station needs live studio programming to switch automatically to scheduled shows, design and test that source handoff explicitly. The input configuration depends on the source; there is no single Liquidsoap configuration that fits all three patterns.
Before encoding, confirm that the station has the necessary rights to transmit the audio on YouTube in the territories where it will be available. A station’s broadcast permission, music rights, recording rights, performer rights, and permission to make material available online may not be the same thing. Keep relevant written licenses and permissions accessible, and verify their territory and platform scope.

Choose a VPS for the actual workload
A VPS is a cloud-hosted virtual machine. Its price depends on its configuration, and a plan cannot be recommended responsibly without knowing the source, visual, encoding workload, traffic allowance, and whether the server has any job besides delivering YouTube. DigitalOcean, for example, says Droplet prices depend on configuration; its published pricing page was verified on 25 August 2026: DigitalOcean Droplet pricing.
Compare current plans against these needs rather than selecting a tier because it is described as “cheap”:

- CPU capacity: Video encoding can be more demanding than relaying an already encoded audio stream. Match the CPU to your chosen video format and encoder.
- Memory: Allow enough for the operating system, Liquidsoap, FFmpeg or its encoding backend, and any additional services.
- Traffic and egress: Check what the plan includes and how provider charges apply to sustained outgoing traffic. The workload here sends a continuous stream to YouTube.
- Region and route: Consider the server’s location relative to the station’s audio source and YouTube’s ingestion endpoint; verify the connection rather than assuming a nearby region is best.
- Recovery and administration: Decide how you will notice a stopped process, restart it, and regain access if the VPS or network has a problem.
- Total price: Check the live plan price and any relevant traffic or add-on charges before provisioning. No single lowest suitable price follows from the title alone.
Configure Liquidsoap and connect YouTube Live
Liquidsoap handles the audio source and output. Its documented YouTube example uses RTMP with FFmpeg encoding. Your exact source declaration will vary; a playlist, an authorized internet-radio feed, and a studio contribution require different inputs. Follow the current Liquidsoap documentation for the relevant source and output syntax rather than copying a configuration intended for a different input.
- Install Liquidsoap and the needed encoding support on your Linux VPS using the installation method supported for your distribution. Confirm that your Liquidsoap build includes the output and encoder components you plan to use.
- Set up your chosen input: the authorized station stream, a reachable studio feed, or station-owned playlist automation. Confirm that Liquidsoap can read it and that audio continues through a representative test period.
- Create or select a stream in YouTube Live Control Room. Copy the current ingestion address and stream key displayed there. Use the RTMPS URL when YouTube provides it and your encoder supports it. YouTube’s instructions are at Set up your encoder for live streaming.
- Configure Liquidsoap’s output to send the encoded program to the YouTube ingestion address with the stream key. Keep the key private: do not publish it in a script repository, expose it on a public page, or include it in logs that others can read.
- Add a simple visual component. YouTube expects a video stream as well as audio. Choose a modest resolution and a static or lightly animated visual that suits the station and the VPS capacity. Avoid adding more visual complexity than the server can encode continuously.
- Start with YouTube’s published encoder guidance. YouTube lists constant bitrate encoding, AAC or MP3 audio, and a recommended two-second keyframe interval (no more than four seconds). These are general settings, not a guarantee that a particular VPS, source, or network will be reliable.
- Run a controlled test broadcast using representative audio and visual movement. Check that audio is present, remains synchronized, and reaches YouTube at the intended quality. Watch YouTube’s stream-health information before relying on the setup.
- Prepare for recovery. Decide how you will detect a failed input, encoder process, or VPS connection, and how you will restart or restore the stream. A successful test does not remove the need to monitor the live output.

Know what YouTube checks and what a license does not solve
YouTube scans live streams for matches to third-party content, including copyrighted live broadcasts. If it detects a match, it may replace the stream with a placeholder and warn the broadcaster; if the material continues, YouTube may interrupt or terminate the stream. For licensed third-party material, YouTube advises asking the rights owner to add the channel to its Content ID allowlist. A license alone may not prevent an automated interruption if the channel has not been allowlisted. See YouTube’s live-streaming restrictions.
Confirm the station’s actual rights for the repertoire, recordings, performers, broadcasters, territories, and YouTube use involved. This article cannot determine Indian copyright requirements or whether a particular station’s licenses are sufficient. YouTube also documents restrictions that can disable live streaming, including matching another copyrighted broadcast or having an active live stream receive a copyright strike.

Add Icecast only if you need a separate listener stream
Icecast is optional for YouTube delivery. If the station also wants a direct audio player outside YouTube, Liquidsoap can encode and send audio to Icecast, which relays it to listeners through mount points. That is a separate output for direct listeners, not a required intermediary between Liquidsoap and YouTube. See Liquidsoap’s Icecast documentation.
