A resolution change alone does not reveal why a YouTube Live stream looks washed out. First determine whether the problem is in the stream itself or only in a preview or playback display. Then check whether you intended to stream SDR or HDR and confirm that your source, encoder, and YouTube stream settings use a compatible color format. YouTube specifies Rec. 709 for SDR; its HDR workflow has additional codec, bit-depth, and color-metadata requirements.
First, find out where the washed-out image appears
Before changing encoder settings, compare the Live Control Room preview with an actual playback endpoint. YouTube states that the Live Control Room preview does not show HDR colors, so it cannot by itself establish that an HDR stream is being encoded incorrectly. Check the stream on a playback device that supports HDR, with HDR enabled if applicable, and look in YouTube’s quality menu for an HDR label. A device without HDR support will show the stream in SDR. See YouTube’s HDR streaming guidance.
- Only the preview looks wrong: If the stream is intended to be HDR, do not diagnose its HDR color from the Live Control Room preview alone. Confirm playback on a compatible device.
- Only one viewer or display sees the problem: Display HDR support and settings may affect what that viewer sees. Compare the same playback quality on another HDR-capable device if one is available.
- The actual stream looks wrong on a suitable playback device: Check the intended SDR/HDR format and the whole source-to-encoder chain next.
Check whether the stream should be SDR or HDR
If you intend to stream SDR
Verify that the encoder’s color space is set to Rec. 709, YouTube’s specified color space for SDR. YouTube’s live encoder guidance distinguishes 8-bit SDR from 10-bit HDR and provides its current recommendations for resolution, frame rate, bitrate, and keyframes: Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.
If the source is ordinary SDR footage, keep the workflow SDR rather than enabling HDR options without an HDR source. A resolution change does not turn SDR material into HDR or ensure that the encoder’s color interpretation matches the source.

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
If you intend to stream HDR
Confirm that the camera, game, or other source actually produces compatible HDR, and that the encoder and ingest method support YouTube’s HDR requirements. YouTube’s documented OBS HDR procedure calls for OBS 30.1 or later, a hardware HEVC encoder, Main 10 profile, P010 color format, and Rec. 2100 PQ or HLG color space; YouTube recommends HLG. These are requirements for the documented OBS HDR setup, not universal settings to apply to an SDR stream or to every encoder.
Make sure the source’s HDR metadata and the encoder’s selected color space and transfer function agree. Changing a single HDR setting while the source remains SDR, or while its metadata describes a different format, can create a mismatch. YouTube notes that incorrect color-space marking can cause oversaturation and shifted hues; that is one possible mechanism, not proof of the cause in a particular stream.

Verify the YouTube stream key and protocol
If you are sending HDR over HLS, YouTube says to use an HLS stream key and leave Turn on manual resolution unchecked. Follow YouTube’s HLS setup guidance alongside its HDR instructions. Do not assume that a stream-key or protocol setting for one workflow applies to another; confirm that your encoder and selected YouTube ingest option match.
Retest without changing several things at once
- Record the current source format, encoder color settings, stream-key type, and playback device.
- Choose one test segment and keep the content, playback device, and YouTube quality level the same for each comparison.
- Change one relevant setting at a time—for example, correct an SDR stream to Rec. 709, or correct an HDR encoder setting to match a compatible HDR source.
- Start a test stream and inspect actual playback, not just the Live Control Room preview. For HDR, use a device that supports HDR and check whether YouTube identifies the playback quality as HDR.
- If the result is still wrong, note your streaming software and version, source device, encoder or capture hardware, resolution, frame rate, color settings, stream-key type, and the device on which playback looks wrong. Those details are needed to narrow down a setup-specific cause.
Comparing different clips, devices, or quality levels can obscure the effect of a setting: HDR support, playback conversion, and transcoding may differ across those conditions. This controlled retest is a practical diagnostic approach, not a YouTube-prescribed test protocol.

When HDR-to-SDR conversion is involved
A viewer on a non-HDR device receives SDR playback even if the creator intended HDR. YouTube says its automated SDR downconversion can give good results, but may not produce a perfect result on challenging clips. Its discussion of a 3D LUT hint concerns HDR uploads; do not treat that as a direct Live-stream setting. See YouTube’s HDR upload and conversion guidance.
Common symptoms and next checks
| What you see | What to check |
|---|---|
| Washed-out colors only in Live Control Room preview | If the stream is HDR, use a real playback endpoint; the preview does not show HDR colors. |
| Flat or incorrect color on a non-HDR display | Check whether the device supports HDR. YouTube shows SDR on devices that do not support HDR. |
| Oversaturation or shifted hues in actual playback | Check that the encoder’s color-space marking and metadata match the source and intended SDR/HDR workflow. |
| HDR intended, but playback is not identified as HDR | Verify the HDR source, supported encoder settings, YouTube stream-key/protocol requirements, and playback-device capability. |
| SDR source looks wrong after enabling HDR settings | Return to an SDR workflow and verify Rec. 709 rather than applying HDR settings to a source that does not produce compatible HDR. |
Or let it run in the cloud
StreamNeo is a YouTube-only cloud service for keeping an uploaded video or playlist live; it does not broadcast from a camera, and using it does not correct a color-space or HDR mismatch. The workflow is to upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Its cloud playback means your computer and home connection do not have to stay on, and it automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. Uploaded video streams as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot rather than quality tiers. The first day is free with no card; the monthly option is $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo for details, or start the free first day.
