Keep the source visible during a test, and confirm VLC is installed with the same architecture as OBS—64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC. These checks address the most common configuration causes without assuming every playback failure has the same explanation.
Check the source type and playlist
OBS has two similar-looking options with different purposes: Media Source is for a single file and has its own Loop control; VLC Video accepts multiple media items as a playlist and uses Loop Playlist. For a playlist, make sure you are changing the VLC Video Source rather than the single-file source. OBS’s media source documentation describes these source types and their properties.
- In OBS, find the scene containing the playlist and select its VLC Video source.
- Open the source properties and verify that the intended video files appear in the list. Do not assume a playlist in the VLC desktop app automatically supplies the same items to OBS.
- Enable Loop Playlist. OBS documents this option as on by default; it restarts the source after it runs out of media files.
- Leave Shuffle off while troubleshooting so you can tell whether playback advances through the expected order.
If a file is absent, cannot be opened, or is listed with an outdated path, correct the list before testing the loop. The loop setting cannot play an item that the source does not have available.
Keep the source visible during the test
OBS documents the default VLC Video visibility behavior as Stop when not visible, restart when visible. If a scene switch or source visibility toggle hides the playlist, playback can stop and restart when shown again. That interruption may look like a playlist or looping fault.

For a controlled test, keep the source visible in the active scene and play past the end of one file. If the scene needs the source to stop while hidden, retain that behavior and account for it when interpreting playback. OBS describes source visibility behavior in its Media Sources documentation.
Confirm VLC is installed and matches OBS
VLC Video relies on VLC libraries. VLC must be installed for the source to appear in OBS; OBS also specifies that 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC. Check both installations rather than installing a different VLC version based only on an old forum suggestion.

- Confirm VLC is installed on the same computer running OBS.
- Check whether OBS is 64-bit and install 64-bit VLC if it is.
- After installing or correcting VLC, restart OBS and reopen the source properties to verify the playlist loads.
Identify where playback actually fails
“It only plays one file,” “it stops on the last frame,” and “it doesn’t go to the next video” describe different possible symptoms. First determine whether VLC Video fails to advance from one item to the next, or whether it plays the full list and then fails to restart. Keep the source visible and watch a short controlled run so the failure point is clear.
- Stops after one item: recheck the listed media entries, file paths, and whether the source is VLC Video.
- Reaches the final item but does not start again: verify Loop Playlist is enabled.
- Stops when changing scenes: test with the source continuously visible and review its visibility behavior.
- Source is missing or the playlist will not load: confirm VLC is installed and its architecture matches OBS.
Collect details before pursuing a version-specific fault
If those checks do not explain the problem, record the OBS and VLC versions, operating system, playlist file type (if applicable), number and paths of the listed items, and an OBS log. This makes it easier to distinguish a settings or file-path issue from a fault tied to a particular setup.

Older reports describe narrow cases, not a universal fix. A 2018 OBS forum thread concerned OBS 21.0.1 64-bit and VLC 3.0.0 64-bit; one participant said VLC 2.2.4 resolved their issue. That is a historical anecdote, not current compatibility guidance, so do not downgrade without checking supported versions and reproducing the problem. A 2022 report for OBS 27.2.4 on Windows 10 described one .xspf file repeating when a directory of .xspf files was used; the issue was closed as not planned. It does not establish that .xspf playlists or folders generally fail.
When to consider another playlist source
If your workflow needs folder updates or playlist management beyond VLC Video’s behavior, you can evaluate Media Playlist Source. Its update history reports fixes for playlist progression, including when the same video path appears again; that history does not show that it fixes every VLC source problem.

Check the current release notes and platform instructions before installing. The update history states that version 0.1.0 and later requires OBS 31. Compare the plugin’s version requirement with your installed OBS before switching, especially if you need to keep an older setup.
