How to Put a QR Code on a Prerecorded Property Tour Stream on YouTube Live

Use OBS to place a QR image or browser overlay over a prerecorded property tour, then preview and test the YouTube Live feed before broadcasting.

Use an encoder such as OBS to place a QR code over your prerecorded tour, then send the composed scene to YouTube Live. In OBS, add the tour as a Media Source, add the QR as an Image Source or Browser Source, and put the QR layer above the video. Preview the encoded feed in YouTube’s Live Control Room and test the code from a phone before your public event.

Choose how the QR code will appear

First decide where the code should send viewers: for example, to the property listing or a page with tour details. Confirm the destination is correct and reachable before you create the code. A QR generator or destination URL is separate from YouTube; YouTube does not create the overlay for you.

Approach Best for Trade-off
Static image A single QR code that stays visible throughout the tour. Simple to add in OBS, but changing the destination means replacing the image or changing the URL it encodes.
Browser Source A webpage-based overlay, including one that may be updated without replacing a local image. Test the page and its appearance in OBS before the event; the OBS guide describes browser sources as webpages commonly used for overlays.
Timed transparent video overlay A code that appears at chosen points in the prerecorded sequence. Requires preparing and synchronizing a separate overlay asset. Pipelink documents a transparent .mov overlay for VOD use, but check the service’s current functionality and terms before relying on it.

These options affect how you manage the overlay, not whether people will scan it. The available sources establish no universal minimum QR size, viewing distance, or display duration that guarantees a scan.

Set up the prerecorded tour and QR code in OBS

  1. Prepare the video and QR. Choose and verify the destination page, then export the QR as an image. If you want a browser-based overlay instead, have its page ready to test. Keep a copy of the final QR image and confirm that it scans to the intended destination.
  2. Create a scene. In OBS, create or select a scene for the tour. Add the prerecorded file as a Media Source, then add the QR image as an Image Source. For a webpage overlay, use a Browser Source instead. OBS’s Sources Guide explains these source types and layering: OBS Sources Guide.
  3. Layer and place the code. In the Sources list, put the QR source above the video source so it appears in front. Resize and position it without obscuring important property details. Check the scene while the footage is moving, not just against a still frame, to see whether changing backgrounds make the code hard to distinguish.
  4. Check playback behavior. Play the scene through the tour and confirm the file starts as intended and does not stop or expose an unwanted gap. If using a timed overlay, verify its timing against the video. Inspect both picture and audio in the OBS output.

YouTube recommends configuring an encoder well before the event, starting it ahead of the scheduled time, and checking the Live Control Room preview. Its live-streaming tips say to set up at least 2 hours in advance and start the encoder at least 15 minutes before the event; these are YouTube’s operational recommendations, not a guarantee of setup time. See YouTube live streaming tips.

Connect OBS to a YouTube Live event

  1. Check live-stream eligibility. YouTube says a channel must be verified and have no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. First-time activation may take up to 24 hours, so do not leave activation until event day. See YouTube’s encoder setup instructions.
  2. Create or schedule the event. In YouTube Studio, create or schedule the live event and choose the encoder workflow. Use the event’s stream URL and stream key to connect OBS. Follow YouTube’s current on-screen instructions for the event and encoder; interface labels can change.
  3. Enter the connection details in OBS. Open OBS’s stream settings and select the YouTube service, then enter the stream URL and key supplied for the event. Keep the key private: YouTube describes it as functioning like the stream’s password and address. If it is exposed, reset it in YouTube Studio before broadcasting.
  4. Start the encoder and wait for the preview. Start streaming from OBS early enough for YouTube to receive the feed. Do not assume the stream is ready just because OBS shows output; wait for the Live Control Room preview and inspect the composed video there.

YouTube documents encoder streaming for content with overlays and hardware inputs. Its encoder setup and tips pages are the authoritative references for the current event workflow: Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder and YouTube live streaming tips.

Preview and test the code in the actual stream

  • Test from the YouTube output. Scan the QR from the Live Control Room preview or an unlisted test stream on a phone. The OBS canvas alone is not enough: YouTube transcodes streams for different devices and network conditions, so the encoder preview does not show every viewer’s eventual playback.
  • Try representative viewing conditions. Check the code on common phone models and at typical playback sizes. Test while the tour is playing and the QR is against different parts of the footage.
  • Confirm the destination and visibility. Make sure the scanned code opens the correct page, loads successfully, and remains visible rather than being covered by playback controls or other interface elements.
  • Check the complete feed. YouTube advises checking representative audio and video and monitoring stream health. Confirm that the tour, overlay, and sound all behave correctly before starting the public event. See YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions guidance.

There is no source-backed universal pixel size or scan-success guarantee to apply to every screen. Adjust the QR based on real tests of the encoded output rather than relying on a single fixed measurement.

Go live, monitor, and finish the event

  1. Once the preview, QR scan, audio, and stream-health checks pass, start the event in YouTube Studio according to its scheduled workflow.
  2. Monitor the stream and the tour playback while it is live. If YouTube drops the encoder connection or the media playback stops, follow the event and encoder controls to restore the feed and verify the preview again.
  3. End the broadcast using the YouTube and encoder controls for the event. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; that limit concerns its automatic archive behavior, not a guarantee that every stream will be saved in every circumstance. See YouTube’s encoder instructions.

Check rights before broadcasting property footage

YouTube’s live-stream terms put responsibility on the content provider to hold the rights needed for the live content and to comply with Community Guidelines and applicable law. Before streaming, confirm permission for the property footage, music, people shown, and any third-party material. See YouTube livestream terms and conditions.

Or let it run in the cloud

If the prerecorded tour is intended to run as a continuous YouTube stream rather than as a one-time event, StreamNeo is a cloud option: upload the video or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops uploaded videos, so nothing has to stay on at home. Every slot streams the upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot; it automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card, one free day per account. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo is for uploaded videos streaming to YouTube, not live camera footage.
