To subtitle a gaming replay, add or edit captions on the stream archive in YouTube Studio; captions shown during the live broadcast are a separate workflow. For an always-on channel, first make sure YouTube creates an archive you can caption: streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured, so keep a local recording and plan shorter broadcasts if you need dependable replay subtitles.
Replay subtitles and live captions are different
Captions added to a saved replay appear on the archived video’s watch page. Live captions are delivered while viewers watch the broadcast. YouTube says live automatic captions do not remain on the video after the stream ends; the video-on-demand (VOD) process generates captions separately, and they may differ. Treat the archive as its own captioning task.

Add subtitles to the archived replay
- Confirm that an archive exists. In YouTube Studio, locate the completed stream under your videos or live content. If it is missing, see the archive limits below; there may be no replay to caption.
- Open the video’s subtitle controls. In YouTube Studio, select the archive, then open Subtitles. Use the available controls to create, upload, edit, or review a caption track.
- Choose how to provide the captions. You can edit captions in Studio or upload a timed-text file. YouTube lists basic UTF-8 SRT as a supported format; caption files include both text and timing codes. Check the current uploader for accepted formats and options.
- Check timing and text. Preview the uploaded or edited track against the gameplay. Correct timing drift, speaker changes, player and character names, game-specific terminology, overlapping commentary, and sound cues that matter to understanding the action.
- Verify the viewer experience. Open the replay’s watch page and turn captions on. Check that they are readable and synchronized on the devices your audience commonly uses.
Caption the broadcast while it is live
YouTube automatic live captions
YouTube documents English-only automatic live captions for some English channels, with availability subject to rollout. They are enabled for an individual live stream, not once for the whole channel, and require normal latency. Low or ultra-low latency can prevent them from appearing. English automatic captions are not a universal solution for multilingual gameplay, and recognition may mishear player names, game terms, or fast overlapping commentary.
Audio quality, unsupported language, long silences, and speakers talking over one another can delay, degrade, or prevent automatic captions. Check the live stream’s caption options in YouTube Studio and test before relying on them for an event.

Professional live-caption feed
For live captions that need a dedicated service, YouTube supports captions embedded in the encoder as EIA 608/CEA 708, or a supported software caption feed sent over its captions ingestion connection. In the event workflow, enable Closed captions, copy the signed Captions Ingestion URL, and give it to the captioning service. One stream entry point accepts one caption feed.
YouTube lists Total Eclipse (Eclipse/AccuCap 6.0.0.5 or later), Case CATalyst (BCS 14.52 or later), CaptionMaker (5.22 or later), and StreamText.Net as supported options. Check compatibility and service coverage with the vendor before choosing one. This specialist route is for captions during the broadcast; it is not necessary just to edit subtitles on a saved replay.

Plan archives for an always-on channel
Keep each captionable broadcast within the archive limit
YouTube can automatically archive streams shorter than 12 hours, but warns that broadcasts exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. A nonstop 24/7 broadcast therefore is not a dependable way to create a complete, captionable archive. Structure the channel as separate broadcasts below that limit if you need individual replays, and retain local recordings as a backup. YouTube recommends keeping a local recording.
Do not treat DVR as a replay or caption track
DVR lets viewers pause and rewind during a live stream, but YouTube says rewind may be limited or unavailable when a stream exceeds 12 hours. Viewers also cannot seek to a point before that broadcast began. DVR is a live viewing feature, not a substitute for preserving and captioning an archived replay.

Use a software-first workflow
YouTube’s encoder guidance names gameplay as a common use for an encoder and recommends previewing streams and monitoring local archive integrity. Adding subtitles to an existing replay does not itself require a capture card, special microphone, or hardware encoder: the caption work happens in Studio or through a timed-text file. If you do encode gameplay, test the broadcast and confirm your local recording is intact before depending on the archive.
Common caption and archive problems
- The stream ended, but the live captions are gone. This is expected: live automatic captions do not stay on the video. Add or review a separate caption track on the archive.
- No archive appears in Studio. A stream longer than 12 hours may not have been captured. Keep local recordings and use broadcast segments short enough to fall within YouTube’s stated archive window.
- Automatic captions are missing or delayed. Check whether the channel and stream have access, whether the stream is using normal latency, and whether the audio is clear. Unsupported language, silence, or overlapping speech can also interfere.
- Captions contain incorrect gaming terms or names. Review and edit the generated text; automatic recognition can misrepresent speech, especially with jargon and overlapping commentary.
- An uploaded subtitle file is out of sync. Check its timing codes and preview it in Studio against the archive. Correct the file or edit the track, then verify playback again.
- A live caption service is not reaching YouTube. Confirm that Closed captions were enabled, the service received the correct signed Captions Ingestion URL, and the provider supports the chosen embedded or software-feed workflow.
