Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →For a 24/7 YouTube stream on a Linux cloud VM, start with a systemd service that restarts the encoder after failure. Add WatchdogSec= only if the encoder or a wrapper actually sends systemd periodic health notifications; the setting alone does not monitor an arbitrary process. RuntimeWatchdogSec= is different: it requires a watchdog device exposed to the VM and is intended to recover the machine, not supervise one encoder.
The VM provider, Linux distribution, systemd version, and encoder are unspecified, so the example below is a template, not a tested drop-in unit. Check the installed systemd manual and your provider’s VM documentation before relying on watchdog behavior.
Choose the right kind of watchdog
“Watchdog” can mean two separate systemd mechanisms. For most encoder processes, the practical first step is a normal service with restart behavior. A service watchdog is useful only when the process or a supervising wrapper can report meaningful health.
| Mechanism | What it supervises | What it needs | What happens on failure |
|---|---|---|---|
WatchdogSec= (service watchdog) |
One systemd service | The service or wrapper periodically sends WATCHDOG=1 through systemd’s notification socket. |
systemd marks the service failed and terminates it after missed notifications; the configured Restart= policy determines whether it starts again. |
RuntimeWatchdogSec= (system hardware watchdog) |
System-level responsiveness | A compatible watchdog device exposed to the guest, commonly represented by /dev/watchdog or /dev/watchdog0. |
The device can reset the VM if the manager stops servicing it. It is not a substitute for service-level encoder supervision. |
systemd documents that hardware-watchdog settings have no effect when a hardware watchdog is unavailable. Do not assume a particular Indian cloud region or VM family exposes one; check the device in the guest and the provider’s documentation. systemd documentation is rolling upstream guidance, so confirm that the directives are supported by the version installed on your distribution.

Prepare the YouTube broadcast and protect its key
- Create or select a stream. In YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, create or choose the broadcast and obtain its server URL and stream key. YouTube describes the stream key as the stream’s password and address; treat it as a credential. If it is exposed, reset it in Studio and update the encoder.
- Configure the encoder destination. Enter the server URL and key in the encoder or its protected configuration. Use YouTube’s auto-start and auto-stop settings only if you want the encoder’s connection to control the broadcast lifecycle.
- Plan for long broadcasts. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. A 24/7 stream can exceed that threshold, so do not assume YouTube will create one complete archive of the entire continuous broadcast. Decide how archive handling and broadcast rotation fit your channel workflow.

Create a restartable systemd service
For an encoder such as FFmpeg that does not implement systemd’s notification protocol, use a regular service. The following unit shows the relevant shape, not a universal encoder command. Replace the executable, arguments, user, working directory, and paths for your distribution and setup.
[Unit]
Description=YouTube live encoder
After=network-online.target
Wants=network-online.target
[Service]
Type=simple
User=streamer
WorkingDirectory=/srv/youtube-stream
EnvironmentFile=/etc/youtube-stream/encoder.env
ExecStart=/usr/bin/ffmpeg -re -i /srv/youtube-stream/input.mp4 ...
Restart=on-failure
RestartSec=5
[Install]
WantedBy=multi-user.target
The ellipsis is intentional: provide the actual input, video and audio settings, and YouTube output URL required by your encoder. Do not paste this unit unchanged. Keep the stream key out of a world-readable unit file and out of command output or logs. Restrict access to the environment or configuration file containing it, and choose file permissions and ownership appropriate to the service account.

- Save the unit. For example, use
/etc/systemd/system/youtube-stream.service. Confirm the chosen service user can read the media and configuration files and write any required logs or state. - Reload systemd and enable startup. Run
sudo systemctl daemon-reload, thensudo systemctl enable --now youtube-stream.service. Enabling the unit arranges for it to start at boot;--nowalso starts it immediately. - Check the result. Run
systemctl status youtube-stream.serviceandjournalctl -u youtube-stream.service. Confirm the process stays active and inspect error messages before treating the stream as operational.
Restart=on-failure restarts after abnormal termination. Choose Restart=always only when a clean exit should also relaunch the encoder. A short RestartSec= delay avoids an immediate tight restart loop, but repeated failures may also encounter systemd start-rate limiting; check the installed manual and the unit’s logs if restarts stop.

WatchdogSec= is disabled by default. When enabled, systemd activates the service watchdog after startup completes. The service receives WATCHDOG_USEC= and must send periodic WATCHDOG=1 notifications using systemd’s notification protocol. An encoder that never sends those notifications will not become supervised simply by adding the directive.
If the encoder or a wrapper supports systemd notifications, add a timeout appropriate to its health-check design, for example:

Type=notify
WatchdogSec=30s
Restart=on-failure
RestartSec=5
This fragment is illustrative: use Type=notify only if the launched service reports startup readiness as systemd expects, and verify support and syntax on the installed systemd version. The notification API guidance recommends sending keep-alive messages roughly every half of the advertised watchdog timeout. A 30-second timeout would therefore call for a heartbeat at about 15-second intervals, not at the deadline itself.
The heartbeat should represent useful health. If a wrapper keeps sending WATCHDOG=1 while its encoder child has exited or become wedged, systemd sees a healthy service even though the stream is broken. Make the wrapper stop notifying when the child exits or a relevant health check fails. See the systemd service documentation and systemd notification API.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteUnderstand RuntimeWatchdogSec on a cloud VM
RuntimeWatchdogSec= configures systemd to service a watchdog device, which can reboot the machine if it is not serviced. It does not know whether FFmpeg is encoding correctly or whether YouTube is receiving the stream. First check whether the guest exposes a device such as /dev/watchdog0 and whether the provider supports it; device availability and behavior depend on the VM and provider.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
Only configure this mechanism when the device is present and the provider and distribution document its use. If no compatible watchdog is exposed, this setting has no effect. Even when available, retain service-level restart and stream-health monitoring: a reboot-level watchdog and an encoder process restart address different failures. See the systemd system manager configuration documentation.

YouTube’s current encoder guidance recommends RTMPS, constant bitrate (CBR), and a two-second keyframe interval; the interval should not exceed four seconds. For H.264, its recommended video ingest bitrates include:
| Output | Recommended H.264 video bitrate |
|---|---|
| 1080p at 30 fps | 5 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 6 Mbps |
These are YouTube’s recommended video ingest rates, not guarantees about VM network capacity or cloud bandwidth pricing. YouTube’s guidance includes other codec, resolution, and frame-rate combinations; match settings to the source and consult its current live encoder settings rather than extrapolating these two H.264 figures.

Test sustained outbound throughput from the VM and its Indian region with headroom above the selected stream bitrate. Network performance can vary, and a bitrate that consumes all available upload capacity leaves no margin for instability. YouTube recommends RTMPS as a secure extension of RTMP; use the endpoint and connection settings presented for your stream.
Test recovery and monitor the viewer-facing stream
- Start with a test broadcast. Check YouTube Live Control Room’s preview and stream-health indicators, and confirm that video and audio arrive as expected before relying on the service for continuous transmission.
- Test a process failure safely. During a controlled test, stop or terminate the encoder and verify that systemd starts it again. Check
systemctl status youtube-stream.serviceandjournalctl -u youtube-stream.servicefor restart history and errors. - Test watchdog behavior separately. If a notification-capable wrapper is configured, test that a missed heartbeat causes the expected service failure and restart. Do not simulate a production failure against a live audience without a recovery plan.
- Check YouTube after recovery. Confirm the stream is ingesting and visible in Live Control Room. A restarted local process does not by itself prove that the YouTube broadcast recovered as intended.
YouTube advises testing before going live and monitoring stream health and messages during the event. Consult its live encoder metrics and stream health guidance.
Troubleshoot common failures
- The service exits and does not restart: inspect
systemctl statusandjournalctl -u; confirmRestart=on-failureis in the active unit, then check start-rate limiting and the actual exit cause. WatchdogSec=causes repeated failures: confirm that the service really sends systemd notifications and that the notification interval is shorter than the timeout. A plain FFmpeg process does not gain notification support from the setting alone.- The wrapper reports healthy while the stream is dead: its heartbeat is not testing the encoder’s relevant health. Tie notifications to the child process and a meaningful health condition, and stop the heartbeat when that condition fails.
RuntimeWatchdogSec=appears ineffective: verify that the guest has a compatible watchdog device and that provider documentation supports it. The directive cannot provide hardware-watchdog behavior without an exposed device.- YouTube reports poor stream health or the stream drops: check the encoder’s connection, output settings, and sustained regional upload capacity; confirm CBR, RTMPS, and the keyframe interval, then inspect the Live Control Room messages.
- The encoder cannot connect after a key change: update the protected configuration with the current stream key, restart the service, and verify the credential was not exposed in logs or an accessible unit file.
