YouTube does not publish a universal QR size or display-time rule, so judge readability on the devices your viewers are likely to use rather than treating a particular measurement as a platform requirement.
Get the right merchant QR before editing
- Open the seller’s payment app or merchant provider and obtain the QR intended to receive payments for the shop. Do not reconstruct payment details from memory or use a QR whose destination you cannot verify.
- Scan or preview it using the provider’s supported flow, then check that the payee details shown match the seller. NPCI’s BHIM-UPI Guidelines cover merchant payments and QR scanning; they do not establish design specifications for a YouTube video overlay.
- Keep an original copy of the QR image. If the provider supplies an image intended for display, use that rather than altering the code itself.
The payment destination matters as much as whether the code appears to scan. A polished overlay cannot make an incorrect or unverified destination safe.
Add the QR to the promo video
- In your video editor, place the QR over the promo footage as a separate graphic layer. Add a short instruction such as “Scan to pay” and identify the product or offer nearby.
- Keep the QR, price, and product identity visually distinct. Avoid placing the code over busy footage, small text, or the main product detail. A full-screen QR card gives the code more visual space but interrupts the demonstration; a smaller corner overlay leaves more of the product visible but may be harder to scan. Neither layout is established as universally better.
- Choose a display duration that gives viewers a practical chance to notice the offer and use the code, and repeat the offer at useful points for people who join later. There is no source-based universal duration or QR size: treat both as production decisions to test.
- Export in the aspect ratio and resolution planned for the stream. Check the QR after export, not just inside the editor, since compression and scaling can affect its appearance.
Test the finished layout at viewing size
- Preview the exported segment in the streaming software or YouTube live preview with the other graphics, captions, and overlays that will be present. Check the actual player view at the size viewers will see, including on a phone.
- Try scanning the QR from a separate device at that viewing size. Confirm that it resolves to the expected payee in the payment flow. These are prudent checks, not YouTube-mandated technical thresholds.
- If a viewer is watching on the same phone they would use to scan, explain an alternative only if the payment provider’s flow supports it—for example, saving the QR image or using a second device. Do not promise that every payment app supports importing a saved QR.
Choose between a QR overlay, product tags, or both
A QR overlay directs viewers to an external payment route. YouTube Shopping product tags are a separate native option for eligible creators and eligible products; availability depends on channel eligibility, territory, shipping, rights, and content status. Check the current eligibility information in YouTube Studio before planning around tags, since they are not available to every channel or visible to every audience.

YouTube’s live-shopping guidance recommends planning the stream’s purpose, structure, pace, product selection, and order. It says shopping live streams work best for at least 30 to 60 minutes; that is guidance, not a guarantee of sales or a requirement for showing a QR. The same guidance cites a Google/Talk Shoppe study in the United States: 89% of viewers agreed that YouTube creators give recommendations they can trust. That finding concerns trust in recommendations, not QR scanning or payment conversion.

Keep the promotion compliant and useful
- External destinations: YouTube’s external links policy applies to ways of directing viewers off YouTube, including destinations shown or referenced in video and live content. Do not display a misleading, phishing, or otherwise prohibited payment destination. The QR should lead to the seller’s verified payment route.
- Paid brand promotion: If a brand or sponsor provided value for the promotion, use the paid-promotion declaration in YouTube Studio. You remain responsible for clear disclosure and applicable legal requirements. See YouTube’s paid product placements, sponsorships and endorsements guidance.
- Originality in loops: YouTube says monetized videos, including live streams, should be original and authentic. Repetitive or mass-produced content may not qualify for monetization. Repeating a promo is not automatically a violation, but make the loop useful and distinct with product information, narration, demonstrations, or meaningful updates rather than relying on interchangeable templates.
