Because conversion does not automatically make a video smaller. The exported file can grow if its settings encode more data per second or more image detail than the source, or if the encoder is less efficient for that footage. Compare the original and output’s duration, resolution, frame rate, video codec and bitrate, plus audio codec and bitrate. The exact cause depends on those settings.
First, distinguish an upload from a live stream
“For a YouTube stream” can mean preparing a prerecorded file to upload, or encoding video for live ingestion. YouTube publishes separate guidance for the two workflows. Upload recommendations describe a video file; live bitrate recommendations describe the stream sent to YouTube. Do not use a live-stream bitrate as an upload target.
Why a converted file can be bigger
- Higher video bitrate: A fixed bitrate or quality target in the export settings may write more data per second than the source used.
- Higher resolution or frame rate: An export that increases either can encode more image information, even when the original did not contain that extra detail.
- Different codec or encoder settings: Re-encoding already compressed footage with a less efficient codec, preset, or quality setting can produce a larger file at similar perceived quality.
- Audio settings: Audio codec and bitrate contribute to the total size, as does the video track.
- Duration: A longer output contains more encoded data. Check whether the conversion changed the duration or added material.
These are diagnostic possibilities, not a way to identify the cause from file size alone. Without the source and output settings, a specific explanation cannot be confirmed.
Compare the source and export
Use a media information panel or your editing program’s file properties to compare the same fields on both files. Check duration first, then the encoding choices:

Settings for a prerecorded YouTube upload
YouTube’s recommended upload encoding settings specify MP4 as the container and H.264 as the video codec. YouTube recommends variable bitrate, says no bitrate limit is required, and advises uploading at the same frame rate as the recording. Its recommended SDR video bitrates are references, not a promise of a particular file size or instructions to raise the bitrate of a lower-rate source.

These are YouTube’s current upload recommendations, accessed in 2026; they are not live-ingestion settings. YouTube lists stereo audio at 384 kbps in its upload guide and notes that audio playback bitrate is not related to video resolution. Total file size still depends on the audio settings and duration as well as the video.

Settings for sending a live stream to YouTube
For live ingestion, YouTube’s live encoder settings and bitrate guidance recommends constant bitrate (CBR) and gives ranges by codec, resolution, and frame rate. For H.264, its recommended ingestion bitrate is 14 Mbps for 4K/30 and 50 Mbps for 4K/60. These are live-stream figures, not targets for exporting a prerecorded upload. YouTube says it transcodes live streams into multiple output formats for viewers.
Fix the export without needlessly increasing size
- Confirm whether you are exporting a prerecorded upload or configuring a live encoder.
- In the editing program, inspect the export mode: fixed bitrate, quality target, and preset. A higher data rate or quality setting can create a larger file.
- Keep the output resolution and frame rate aligned with the source unless you have a specific reason to change them. YouTube advises matching the recording frame rate for uploads.
- Choose an appropriate codec and encoder preset rather than assuming that every conversion compresses more efficiently.
- Check audio codec and bitrate, and make sure the export has not become longer.
- Export a short representative section and compare the resulting quality and size before encoding the full video, if your editor supports this workflow.
