To stop monetized ads from being triggered on your YouTube livestream, turn off monetization for the stream. If you want to keep monetization on, set mid-rolls to manual and do not insert breaks—but pre-roll and display ads are still automatically enabled when live-stream monetization is on. YouTube does not guarantee that every viewer will see the same ads, or that every ad slot will serve.
Choose the trade-off that fits your stream

These options control monetization and mid-roll handling; none establishes an ad-free guarantee for every viewer. YouTube also says ad slots are not guaranteed to serve ads. Turn off monetization for the livestream
In YouTube Studio, open the active broadcast in Live Control Room and check its monetization setting. Turn monetization off if your priority is to stop monetized ads from being triggered on the stream. Verify the active stream rather than assuming its setting: eligible channels can have channel-level defaults for future streams, and YouTube says monetization defaults to on with the recommended automatic medium option.
YouTube’s available controls and eligibility may change. Check the current Live Control Room monetization instructions for the labels shown on your account. Turning monetization off means you are not earning ad revenue from that stream.

Keep monetization on but prevent mid-rolls
- Open the stream in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room and locate the live ad settings.
- Set mid-roll handling to manual, rather than automatic or scheduled.
- Do not select or insert any mid-roll breaks while the broadcast is running.
- Check the active stream’s setting after it starts; do not rely solely on a saved default for future streams.
YouTube’s official guidance says: “If you do not insert any mid-roll ad breaks, no mid-rolls will be served.” This is specifically about mid-rolls. With live monetization on, YouTube says pre-roll and display ads are automatically turned on, so manual mode does not remove those formats.
Understand scheduled, automatic, and delayed mid-rolls
Scheduled mid-rolls
YouTube documents scheduled break intervals of 6, 12, 18, 24, or 30 minutes. Scheduling breaks is not the same as disabling them; choose manual with no inserted breaks if your aim is to prevent mid-rolls.

Automatic mid-rolls
Automatic mid-roll frequency can be set to low, medium, or high. YouTube says its system places breaks at natural breakpoints, and timing may differ between viewers. Automatic mid-roll optimizations can limit disruption for channel members, temporarily pause mid-rolls for viewers sending gifts, Super Chats, or Stickers, and snooze mid-rolls for all viewers during high-engagement moments. These measures are not an ad-free promise.
Delay ads
The Live Control Room’s “Delay ads” control delays automatic mid-rolls for 10 minutes. YouTube says a five-second countdown appears before ads resume. This is a temporary delay, not a persistent setting that stops ads, and manually placed mid-rolls still display while the delay is active. See YouTube Help on live-stream ad behavior.

What viewers may still experience
Ad delivery is variable: YouTube says ad slots are not guaranteed to serve, and viewers may have different ad timing. The fact that one viewer reports no interruption does not show that another viewer will have the same experience. Likewise, avoiding mid-rolls does not establish that viewers will see no pre-roll or display ads when monetization remains on.
YouTube’s monetization documentation mentions YouTube Premium as a source of eligible creator revenue, but that does not establish what a Premium viewer will experience on this particular music livestream. Do not promise that Premium removes every interruption in this case.

Revenue and the interruption trade-off
YouTube reported an over 20% average uplift in instream ad revenue per hour for channels that enabled live automatic mid-rolls compared with channels that did not. This was a YouTube-reported average across 207 countries in January 2024, not a prediction for an individual 24/7 music stream and not evidence that automatic mid-rolls cause fewer interruptions. For a music channel, the practical choice is between keeping ad monetization and accepting that some viewers may receive ads, or disabling monetization for the stream to avoid triggering monetized ads. Manual mid-roll control is a narrower compromise: it can prevent mid-roll breaks while leaving the automatically enabled pre-roll and display formats in play.
