OBS Studio is the best-supported free desktop choice for looping children’s videos in a YouTube livestream. Add one file as a Media Source and turn on Loop; for several files, use OBS’s VLC Video source and enable Loop Playlist. You still need to send the output to YouTube through its encoder workflow, and you must have the rights to every video and audio track.
Which free software should you use?
Use OBS Studio if you want a free, local-computer workflow. Its Media Source can repeat one video file, while its VLC Video source can play and repeat a playlist. OBS is listed as open-source software available at no charge in YouTube’s encoder directory.
Looping in OBS means your computer encodes and sends the video as a live broadcast. It is different from a viewer pressing YouTube’s playback-loop control: that repeats playback for the viewer but does not create a livestream.
Choose the right OBS workflow
| Workflow | Best for | Repeat setting | Requirement |
|---|---|---|---|
| OBS Media Source | One local video file | Loop repeats the file after it finishes | OBS and a supported media file |
| OBS VLC Video source | Several files played as a playlist | Loop Playlist restarts the list after it finishes | VLC installed separately; match its bitness to OBS (64-bit VLC for 64-bit OBS) |
OBS documents these source options and supported media formats, including MP4, in its Media Sources guide. Choose the single-file option when you want the same video repeated; use VLC Video when you need multiple videos in a chosen sequence.

Set up one video to loop and stream to YouTube
- Install OBS Studio. Download it from the official OBS Project site.
- Create or select a scene. In OBS, add a source using the + control in the Sources panel, then choose Media Source.
- Select the video file. In the source properties, use the local-file option and browse to your video. Turn on Loop, then confirm the properties.
- Check the scene. Confirm the video appears in the preview and fits the canvas. Play it long enough to check both picture and audio before planning a long broadcast.
- Enable YouTube live streaming and create an encoder stream. Follow YouTube’s encoder instructions in YouTube Studio. YouTube says first-time live activation may take up to 24 hours, so do not leave setup until the planned start time.
- Connect OBS using the stream details YouTube provides. Enter the server and stream key from YouTube’s encoder workflow in OBS’s stream settings. Treat the key like a password: do not publish it or show it in a video, and use YouTube Studio to replace it if it is exposed.
- Start the broadcast. Start streaming in OBS and check YouTube Studio’s live preview and stream status. Confirm the video and sound are arriving before sharing the live page.
Set up a playlist of children’s videos
- Install VLC as well as OBS. OBS’s VLC Video source depends on VLC being installed. Match the bitness: install 64-bit VLC when using 64-bit OBS.
- Add the source. In an OBS scene, add VLC Video from the Sources panel.
- Load the files in the intended order. Add the local video files to the source’s playlist. Leave Shuffle off if sequence matters.
- Enable repeat. Turn on Loop Playlist in the source properties so playback starts again after the final item.
- Preview and test the sequence. Check that each item loads and that audio levels are suitable, then stream through YouTube’s encoder workflow as above.
Copyright and child-directed livestream rules
Clear rights for every part of the programme
YouTube says it scans active livestreams for matches to third-party content. A match can result in a placeholder image or warning; if matched material remains, the broadcast may be temporarily interrupted or terminated. This applies to the full soundtrack and picture, including animation, music, voices, sound effects, and stock elements. A licence does not necessarily prevent an interruption: YouTube says the content owner may need to add your channel to its Content ID allowlist. See YouTube’s live-stream copyright guidance.
Set the audience accurately
If the videos are made for children, mark the content accordingly in YouTube Studio. YouTube restricts or disables features on made-for-kids livestreams, including live chat and live chat replay; its guidance also identifies restrictions on comments for archives and upcoming streams, reminder notifications, and personalized ads. Contextual ads may still appear. Do not mislabel the audience to avoid these effects. Check YouTube’s live-stream restrictions guidance for current details.

Be careful if children appear on camera
This workflow is for uploaded video files, not a camera feed. If a broadcast includes minors, review YouTube’s current rules for livestreams featuring minors, including its restrictions involving appearances by children under 16, on the same live-stream restrictions page.
A loop does not guarantee monetization
Repeating a video is a playback setup, not an assurance that a channel or stream will qualify for monetization. YouTube’s monetization policies address repetitive or mass-produced material as inauthentic content; review the current YouTube channel monetization policies before relying on revenue. Copyright permission and monetization eligibility are separate questions.
