To make existing iPhone HEVC (H.265) clips easier to use in an OBS playlist, convert them to H.264 on a Mac with QuickTime Player or Finder, then load the converted files in OBS’s VLC Video source and check playback. For new iPhone recordings, choose Settings > Camera > Formats > Most Compatible; that setting uses H.264 for future videos, not clips already recorded. Apple’s HEIF and HEVC guidance explains the format options.
Why convert HEVC to H.264?
HEVC is also known as H.265. Apple describes it as more storage-efficient than H.264 while preserving the same visual quality. H.264 is the more compatible choice when a particular playback setup does not handle an HEVC clip reliably. Converting creates a new H.264 file; keep the original until you have confirmed the converted version works in your OBS setup.
Conversion does not guarantee that every file will play in every computer’s OBS and VLC build. Verify the output in the actual playlist source you intend to use.
Convert existing iPhone clips on a Mac
Option 1: Export with QuickTime Player
- Make a copy of the original clip or keep it unchanged in its current location.
- Open the HEVC video in QuickTime Player.
- Choose File > Export As, then select Greater Compatibility (H.264) in the export dialog.
- If your version shows an HEVC checkbox instead of a format pop-up, deselect the checkbox to choose the compatible export.
- Save the converted file with a distinct name or in a separate folder so you can identify it in OBS.
Apple’s menu labels can vary by software version. If you do not see the same controls, try Finder’s encode service instead.

- 【Strong Adsorption】The inspiration of the silicone phone suction case comes from the adhesive force of the octopus. Each suction cup phone mount is 3.15 inches long and 2.17 inches wide, with 24 independent suction cups providing a stronger and more stable suction force, so you don't have to worry about your phone falling during use.
- 【Back of Phone Suction Grip】Remove the adhesive film on the phone suction cup and stick it on the phone case. You can then fix the phone on any smooth surface, which is very convenient. (The phone suction cup cannot be removed and reused after being attached to the phone case. It is recommended to attach it to a regular phone case, not a valuable one.)
- 【Widely Used】Our non-slip silicone phone sticky grip mount attaches to almost any flat phone case and make it compatible with common mobile phones such as iPhone and Android. You can shoot, watch videos or video calls in the kitchen, gym, dance studio, bathroom and other places.
- 【Capture the Wonderful Picture】Whether you are a TikTok creator or just like to share videos and photos, this phone suction cup can help you hands-free capture wonderful videos and photos for sharing with friends.
- 【Note】You can fix the phone suction cup on a smooth surface such as a mirror or glass. If necessary, wipe the suction cup with a damp cloth to obtain stronger suction. Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)
Option 2: Encode from Finder
- In Finder, Control-click the video file.
- Choose Services > Encode Selected Video Files.
- Choose an H.264 option from the Settings menu and start the encode.
- Keep the original until the resulting file has been checked in OBS.
Choose output dimensions and frame rate
Initially, preserve the source dimensions and frame rate unless your planned stream canvas or receiving setup requires a change. Apple says video at 1080p or lower and 60 fps or lower is more broadly compatible with older devices; these are compatibility guidelines, not mandatory OBS streaming settings. If you use a third-party converter, consult its current documentation and select an H.264 output deliberately. HandBrake documents H.264 MP4 presets, including Production presets, but describes Production as mastering-oriented and says those files are typically much larger than compressed sources.
Make future iPhone recordings H.264
- On the iPhone, open Settings > Camera > Formats.
- Select Most Compatible.
Apple says new photos and videos will then use JPEG or H.264. This changes the format for future captures only; it does not convert HEVC clips already on the phone. Selecting High Efficiency restores HEIF/HEVC recording. The trade-off is storage efficiency versus compatibility.

- SUPERIOR COMFORT — Unlike traditional circular ear buds, the design of EarPods is defined by the geometry of the ear. Which makes them more comfortable for more people than any other ear bud–style headphones.
- HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
- BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
- COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
- INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.
Add the converted clips to an OBS playlist
For a playlist, use OBS’s VLC Video source. OBS documents this source as supporting playlists, looping or shuffling, and visibility behavior controls. VLC must be installed for the source to be available; 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC. The regular Media Source is intended for a media file rather than a playlist, and OBS lists common containers such as MP4 and MOV among its supported extensions.
- Install VLC if needed, matching its architecture to OBS (64-bit VLC for 64-bit OBS).
- In OBS, add a VLC Video source to the scene where the playlist should appear.
- Add the converted H.264 files to that source’s playlist and set the desired order and looping or shuffle behavior.
- Check the source’s visibility behavior if your scene switches or the source may be hidden.
Verify playback before relying on the playlist
- Play each converted output and confirm that video and audio are present.
- In the actual OBS VLC Video source, check the first and last playlist entries, intended order, and looping or shuffle behavior.
- Hide and show the source if your scene workflow depends on visibility behavior, and confirm it behaves as intended.
- If a clip fails, test the original and converted file separately; this helps distinguish a conversion issue from a playlist or VLC setup issue.
Apple notes that viewing, editing, or duplicating HEIF and HEVC media may require current software, stating: “To fully view, edit or duplicate HEIF and HEVC media on your device, upgrade to the latest version of iOS 11 or later or macOS High Sierra 10.13 or later.” See Apple Support for its current guidance.

Troubleshoot common problems
The iPhone clip is not in H.264 after changing the setting
Cause: Most Compatible affects new recordings only. Fix: Convert the existing HEVC file using QuickTime Player or Finder, or record a new clip after changing the camera format.
VLC Video is missing from OBS
Cause: VLC may not be installed, or its architecture may not match OBS. Fix: Install VLC and, for 64-bit OBS, use 64-bit VLC. Reopen OBS and check for the source again.

The file plays outside OBS but not from the playlist
Cause: A file that opens in another player is not proof it will work in the exact OBS/VLC configuration. Fix: Test the converted output in OBS’s VLC Video source, then confirm the source playlist entry, ordering, and VLC installation.
The export is much larger than expected
Cause: Output size depends on the encoding settings; some H.264 presets are aimed at mastering rather than compact delivery. Fix: Review the selected preset and output requirements. HandBrake describes its Production presets as mastering-oriented and says they typically produce files much larger than compressed sources.
