If you want to operate the radio software and YouTube encoder yourself, use a VPS sized for both workloads. What VPS size does an AzuraCast station need?
AzuraCast lists 2 GB RAM and 20 GB disk as its minimum on 64-bit x86_64/amd64 or ARM64. The project cautions that this minimum does not guarantee perfect operation. Its hobby recommendation is 4 CPU cores, 4 GB RAM and at least 40 GB disk. Use the recommended figures as a safer planning target when the budget allows, especially if the server will also encode video for YouTube. AzuraCast’s requirements describe the radio software, not a benchmark of every possible YouTube video-encoding setup.
- RAM: Avoid choosing a 1 GB instance just because it is cheap. AzuraCast identifies database and PHP processes as important memory consumers.
- Disk: Allow room for the installation, upgrades and your audio library. The size of the library is often the largest variable; 20 GB is a minimum, not a guarantee it will hold your collection.
- CPU: Sustained CPU matters more than a low advertised price. Shared-CPU performance can vary, and the available sources do not establish a comparable performance ranking among providers.
- Outbound transfer: Budget for the YouTube feed and any listener traffic. Confirm included transfer, overage rates and how the provider bills it.
- Headroom for video: A simple audio program paired with a static image has a lighter encoding workload than complex or high-resolution video, but the reviewed documentation does not benchmark that exact arrangement. If you composite or encode video on the VPS, plan for that extra workload and test it.
Which low-cost VPS providers are worth comparing?
AzuraCast names Linode (Akamai), Vultr and DigitalOcean as one-click installer choices. That makes them reasonable providers to compare for deployment, but the available figures do not establish a current, like-for-like price ranking for plans that meet AzuraCast’s resource targets. Check each provider’s current plan details for your region before buying.

DigitalOcean’s pricing documentation describes a 60-second or $0.01 minimum and a 672-hour monthly cap for bundled CPU Droplet billing; verify that those terms apply to the specific plan you select. How much network capacity will the YouTube stream use?
YouTube recommends RTMPS for live ingest. For H.264 at 720p and 30 fps, its recommended video bitrate range is 3–8 Mbps; encoder guidance calls for constant bitrate (CBR) and a 2-second keyframe interval, not exceeding 4 seconds. These are YouTube’s encoder settings, not a promise that a particular VPS network or plan will sustain them. Leave network headroom and check the host’s outbound-transfer allowance. The radio service and YouTube output are separate parts of the setup: AzuraCast manages station audio, while an encoder sends a live video stream—often audio paired with a still image—to YouTube. Account for the outbound feed and, if listeners also connect directly to your station, their traffic. AzuraCast notes that listener delivery is often less CPU-intensive than transcoding, but capacity depends on the workload; there is no reliable listener-count figure for an unspecified VPS configuration. What does the VPS run, and how do DJs connect?
AzuraCast is a server-based radio management suite for scheduling station audio and supporting live DJ connections. It is free to install and use, including for commercial purposes, according to its installation guide; hosting and any other services remain separate costs. For a live DJ, AzuraCast’s streaming-software guide covers broadcaster connection settings and recommends Icecast mode for its setup. It identifies Mixxx and BUTT as free, open-source broadcast clients. Follow the station’s broadcaster details in AzuraCast rather than guessing the server address, mount point, port or credentials. If you use a reverse proxy such as Cloudflare, AzuraCast warns it can prevent direct connections to broadcaster ports; keep the web route and broadcast ports distinct and configure them according to the deployment documentation. What to check before choosing a plan
- Confirm the VPS has at least AzuraCast’s 2 GB RAM and 20 GB disk minimum; consider its 4-core, 4 GB RAM and 40 GB disk hobby recommendation.
- Estimate library storage separately from the software installation, and leave free disk space for upgrades.
- Check the provider’s included outbound transfer and overage terms for both YouTube and any direct station listeners.
- Decide whether YouTube output is audio with a static image or a more demanding video composition; do not assume radio-software requirements alone cover video encoding.
- Check the plan’s billing details, backups, IPv4 or other optional charges, and the price after any introductory offer.
- Select a region based on your operational needs, but do not infer better reliability or performance from geography alone; the cited sources do not establish comparative provider reliability.
- Test the encoder and monitor YouTube stream health before relying on the setup continuously.
Common VPS and YouTube streaming problems
AzuraCast will not install or runs out of memory
Likely cause: The VPS is under the documented minimum, or other workloads leave insufficient memory. Fix: Check the architecture and plan resources against AzuraCast’s requirements; move from a 1 GB plan to one with at least 2 GB RAM, and consider the hobby recommendation for more headroom.

The music library fills the disk
Likely cause: Library growth plus installation and upgrade space exceed the disk allocation. Fix: Check free space, account for the library separately and choose a larger disk before the station runs out of room.
YouTube reports unstable ingest or drops the stream
Likely cause: Incorrect encoder settings, insufficient sustained outbound capacity or a connection interruption. Fix: Use RTMPS, CBR and a 2-second keyframe interval for the cited 720p30 H.264 guidance; confirm bitrate and transfer allowance, test the stream, and monitor YouTube’s health indicators.

A remote DJ cannot connect
Likely cause: Incorrect broadcaster settings or a proxy interfering with the broadcaster port. Fix: Copy the connection details from AzuraCast, use the documented Icecast setup and check that the proxy configuration does not block direct broadcaster connections.
The VPS seems overloaded while serving listeners
Likely cause: The workload combines audio transcoding, YouTube encoding and listener delivery, or the shared CPU cannot sustain the load. Fix: Monitor resource use under actual conditions, reduce avoidable encoding work or move to a plan with more suitable resources. Do not rely on an assumed listener limit; AzuraCast says capacity depends on workload.
