To combine children’s story videos reliably, first inspect their streams, choose a format that suits the intended player, and convert only the clips that need it. Use FFmpeg’s concat demuxer when the prepared files have compatible streams and time bases; use the concat filter when joining requires re-encoding. “Looping” can mean repeating an input during processing or repeating the finished video in a player, so set up that behavior separately.
Inspect the videos before choosing conversion settings
There is no universal format that every set of story videos must use. The right resolution, frame rate, codecs, audio layout and container depend on the source files and where you plan to play the result. FFmpeg’s documentation index and command-line documentation describe its inspection and conversion tools: FFmpeg documentation and FFmpeg command-line documentation.
For each clip, record whether it has video and audio, its codecs, dimensions, frame rate, time base and duration. For example, inspect a file with:
ffmpeg -i "story-01.mp4"
FFmpeg prints stream details and duration; an input-only invocation may also report that no output was specified, which is expected for this inspection. Repeat the check for every file. If you have many clips, keep the results in a small inventory so differences are easy to spot.

- Does every file have the same number and type of streams, such as one video and one audio stream?
- Are the video and audio codecs consistent?
- Do dimensions, frame rate and time base match?
- Are durations plausible, or could inaccurate duration metadata affect joins?
The concat demuxer’s requirement is explicit: “All files must have the same streams (same codecs, same time base, etc.).” See the FFmpeg concat demuxer documentation.
Choose a target profile for the playback destination
Decide what the finished video needs to play on before converting. A television, website, editing application or other player may impose different limits. The topic does not specify a target device, so no particular resolution, frame rate, codec or container can be prescribed as the right one for every reader.
Normalize only the properties that need to match. If clips have different dimensions, choose whether to preserve the full image with padding or fill the frame by cropping. Preserving the image avoids cutting off artwork or text; cropping can fill the frame but may remove edges. A scale-and-pad example, with 1280:720 used only as an illustrative target, is:

ffmpeg -i "story-01.mp4" -vf "scale=1280:720:force_original_aspect_ratio=decrease,pad=1280:720:(ow-iw)/2:(oh-ih)/2" -c:v libx264 -c:a aac "converted/story-01.mp4"
Choose dimensions and codecs that the destination supports, and apply the same target settings to each clip. This example re-encodes video and audio; it is not a universal recommendation. If the destination requires a different codec or audio setup, change those options accordingly. FFmpeg documents filters such as scaling and pixel-format conversion in its documentation index.

Choose between the concat demuxer and concat filter
| Route | Use it when | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Concat demuxer | The prepared files already have compatible streams and time bases, and you want to join without re-encoding. | All files must have the same streams and compatible parameters. Duration errors can cause artifacts. |
| Concat filter | The join needs re-encoding, including when the inputs need to be normalized as part of the join. | Set and verify the output streams and target format for the playback destination. |
FFmpeg’s FAQ on concatenating video files recommends the concat filter when re-encoding is needed. It describes the concat demuxer as the option for avoiding re-encoding when file-level concatenation is unavailable and the inputs are compatible.

Join compatible converted files with the concat demuxer
After converting any mismatched clips, make a text file listing them in order. The paths below are examples; use the actual filenames and keep the list in the order the stories should play.
- Create
list.txtcontaining:file 'converted/story-01.mp4' file 'converted/story-02.mp4' file 'converted/story-03.mp4' - Run the concat demuxer with stream copy:
ffmpeg -f concat -safe 0 -i list.txt -c copy "stories-joined.mp4" - Play the result through the full sequence and check for missing audio, visual glitches or abrupt transitions.
The demuxer reads files in sequence and adjusts timestamps. FFmpeg warns that inaccurate duration information can cause artifacts, so investigate a clip whose reported duration is clearly wrong rather than assuming the list alone will fix it. The demuxer documentation explains its file-list format and behavior: concat demuxer.

Use the concat filter when the join needs re-encoding
If the clips have different stream layouts or need re-encoding as part of the join, use the concat filter rather than attempting to packet-copy incompatible files. The following illustrates two inputs that each contain one video and one audio stream:

ffmpeg -i "story-01.mp4" -i "story-02.mp4" -filter_complex "[0:v][0:a][1:v][1:a]concat=n=2:v=1:a=1[v][a]" -map "[v]" -map "[a]" "stories-joined.mp4"
This command assumes both inputs have audio and uses the filter’s output for video and audio. If a clip has no audio, has multiple streams, or the target needs scaling, padding, frame-rate changes or different codecs, adapt the filter graph and output options to those facts. Do not copy this example unchanged for a different stream layout.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Decide what “looping” means for your use case
Joining clips makes one sequence; it does not by itself specify how that sequence repeats. The word “looping” may refer to repeating an input while FFmpeg processes it, playing the completed file repeatedly in a player, or a particular container or platform’s repeat behavior. Those are distinct requirements, and the right mechanism depends on the output and playback context. Test repeat behavior in the actual player or destination instead of treating one loop option as universal.
A public FFmpeg discussion describes converting clips before concatenating them, but does not resolve which meaning of looping applies to a particular workflow: “Help with conversion before concat”.

Troubleshoot common conversion and joining problems
- The demuxer reports mismatched streams or the join fails: Compare each file’s stream count, codecs and time base. Convert the mismatched clips to a common target or use the concat filter when re-encoding is needed.
- The output has glitches at a join: Check that the files meet the demuxer’s compatibility requirements and that duration metadata is reliable. If normalization or re-encoding is necessary, use the filter route.
- The image changes size or is cropped unexpectedly: Review the scale, pad or crop choice against the source aspect ratio and destination frame. Padding preserves the complete image; cropping fills the frame but can remove edges.
- The finished file does not repeat: Confirm whether you need input repetition during processing or playback repetition in the player. A joined file does not establish repeat behavior on its own.
- The audio is absent or misaligned: Check whether every input actually has an audio stream and whether the chosen command maps the intended audio. The concat-filter example assumes one audio stream per input.
