Build a repeatable mix
Keep sources separate
When your recording setup allows it, record or export commentary and game audio on separate tracks. That lets you adjust either source without changing the other. Keep capture gains consistent from rerun to rerun unless there is a reason to change them; otherwise, you may be correcting a recording-level difference in the mix.
Choose reference moments
Pick comparable passages from each rerun: a quiet section, ordinary gameplay, a loud effect or music passage, and a moment when commentary overlaps busy game sound. Use the same kinds of moments when checking later versions so you are comparing like with like.
Make speech understandable first
Set the commentary so listeners can follow it in both quiet and intense gameplay. Adjust game effects or music that mask the voice rather than expecting listeners to turn down the game sound themselves. If the voice level varies substantially, try gentle compression or automation, then listen for pumping—an obvious rise and fall in background sound caused by overly strong compression.

Check loudness and peaks separately
Perceived loudness and peak level are different things. Use a loudness meter to compare equivalent passages between reruns, and use a true-peak meter or limiter to catch peaks that could overload. A limiter can help control peaks, but listen for harshness or distortion after applying it.
EBU R 128 offers a useful production framework for thinking about loudness normalization separately from peak normalization, with true-peak limiting discussed for streaming. It is not a YouTube loudness rule for gameplay reruns. YouTube guidance cited here does not establish a required integrated-loudness or true-peak target for this use, so do not treat a broadcast target as a platform requirement. Check the full export in stereo and mono
Listen through the entire export, not only the reference moments. Check it in stereo on headphones or speakers, then listen in mono. A stereo mix with poor mono compatibility can lose quality or become partly or fully muted when a device converts it to one channel. YouTube advises checking that audio is in phase; phase problems and some stereo processing can make a mix behave badly in mono. Its upload audio troubleshooting guidance explains this risk.
- Speech intelligibility: Can you follow the commentary in quiet and loud gameplay? If not, game sound may be masking the voice, the voice level may vary, or processing may have changed.
- Overall loudness: Do equivalent passages sound similarly loud between reruns? A mismatch can point to changed source gain, mix balance, or dynamics processing.
- Peaks: Do loud effects or voice peaks overload or trigger harsh limiting? Check headroom and peak control.
- Mono compatibility: Does the mix stay clear when collapsed to one channel? If not, investigate phase or stereo processing.
- Platform playback: Does the YouTube version sound different from the local export? Consider playback enhancements as well as the mix.
Compare YouTube playback with the local export
After upload processing, listen to the YouTube playback and compare it with your local export. YouTube may offer audio enhancements, including Stable volume and Voice boost, and viewers have playback controls. Stable volume is a viewer-side feature that balances quiet and loud portions by continuously adjusting levels; it can affect playback independently of your original mix. YouTube also provides a channel control for default audio enhancement behavior on future uploads. Check the current YouTube audio and video quality enhancement settings and viewer volume controls for the controls available to you. Do not assume every viewer has the same playback settings.

Keep upload encoding settings separate from mix balance
YouTube’s recommended upload encoding settings list AAC-LC, Opus, or Eclipsa Audio, a 48 kHz sample rate, and a recommended stereo audio bitrate of 384 kbps. These are encoding recommendations, not a commentary-to-game ratio or loudness target. For the applicable details, see YouTube recommended upload encoding settings.
Save a template and troubleshoot changes
Once a rerun mix passes listening checks, save its source gains, processing chain, and export settings as a template. Revisit them when the game, microphone, room, or capture chain changes. If a new rerun sounds different, compare your reference passages and check the following:

- Commentary becomes hard to understand: Listen to the overlap passage; reduce masking game effects or music, or adjust the voice. Check whether its capture level or dynamics processing changed.
- One rerun sounds louder overall: Compare equivalent passages with a loudness meter and confirm that source gains and mix balance stayed consistent.
- Loud effects sound harsh: Inspect true peaks and limiter behavior. Reduce overload rather than relying on aggressive limiting.
- Audio thins or disappears in mono: Check phase and stereo processing, then recheck the mono version of the export.
- YouTube playback differs from the file: Compare the local export and uploaded playback, accounting for enhancement settings that may affect a viewer’s experience.
