For a YouTube gaming rerun, choose OBS if you want to send a stream from a computer you operate; choose a hosted playlist service if you want prerecorded videos scheduled to run without keeping your computer on. StreamNeo is the first cloud option to consider: it keeps an uploaded-video stream running on YouTube from the cloud, at any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps for one flat price per slot, with the first day free.
How the two workflows differ
| Decision | OBS or another local encoder | Hosted playlist service |
|---|---|---|
| Where the stream runs | On your computer, which sends the stream to YouTube through an encoder connection. | On the service’s infrastructure. YouTube lists Gyre as a cloud option for continuous prerecorded streams; Restream documents scheduled playlists. |
| Does your computer need to stay on? | Yes. The local machine, encoder, files, and internet connection are part of the operating setup. | Not for the documented workflows: Restream says its scheduled playlist can continue while the laptop is unplugged, and YouTube describes Gyre as not requiring a dedicated PC. |
| Playlist scheduling | You operate the local streaming workflow. The documentation reviewed does not establish a particular OBS playlist configuration. | Restream documents arranging videos into a playlist and scheduling it to go live automatically. Its Help Center states a playlist limit of up to 24 hours, as documented July 25, 2026. |
| Stream archive | YouTube’s archive rules apply. Streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured. | The same YouTube archive rules apply to streams delivered by a hosted service. |
| Rights and monetization | You are responsible for game, music, and other content rights, as well as YouTube’s monetization policies. | The same rules apply. Hosting does not provide rights to the game footage or soundtrack. |
This is a comparison of who operates the stream, not a reliability ranking: there has been no comparative stress test establishing that either workflow is more reliable.
Use OBS when you want local control
OBS is a local encoder: your computer reads the video and sends the live stream to YouTube. It suits creators who want to operate the broadcast themselves and can keep the machine and connection available for the duration. YouTube’s encoder workflow requires the stream URL and stream key to be entered in the encoder.
- Enable live streaming on your channel. If this is the first time you have enabled it, YouTube says activation may take up to 24 hours. Check that the channel is eligible and live streaming is enabled before planning a rerun.
- Prepare the source video. Use footage and audio you have the rights to stream. For a long rerun, decide whether you want one continuous broadcast or multiple sessions, and retain your own copy if you need a dependable archive.
- Create or schedule the live stream in YouTube Studio. Select the encoder workflow, then copy the stream URL and stream key provided for the broadcast. Treat the key like a password: anyone who has it may be able to send video to your stream.
- Configure OBS to send the stream to YouTube. In OBS, open Settings → Stream, choose the YouTube service, and connect the account or enter the server and stream key from YouTube. The exact labels can vary with OBS versions and connection method. Add the prerecorded video as a media source and configure it to loop if that is the behavior you want.
- Check the picture and sound before going live. Confirm the correct source is visible, audio is present and not clipping, and the video is not unintentionally cropped or stretched. YouTube’s encoder guidance covers encoder streaming for gameplay, but this comparison does not prescribe a universal bitrate or resolution; choose settings supported by your connection, encoder, and source.
- Start the encoder and verify the YouTube preview. Start streaming in OBS, wait for YouTube to receive the signal, and confirm the preview and stream health in YouTube Studio before starting the broadcast. Keep OBS, the source file, the computer, and the network connection running while the rerun is live.
- End the broadcast deliberately. Stop the stream in OBS when the session is finished and confirm the live event has ended in YouTube Studio. If you need an archival copy, save the original recording separately.
Use a hosted playlist when the computer should be off
A hosted service moves the ongoing stream operation to its infrastructure. You upload or select prerecorded videos, arrange them into a playlist, and schedule or start the broadcast through the service. YouTube’s encoder directory lists Gyre for 24/7 prerecorded streams; Restream documents a scheduled playlist workflow that can continue when a laptop is unplugged. These are examples of hosted approaches, not evidence that every service has the same limits or features.

Restream’s Help Center states that its playlists can be up to 24 hours long. That is a Restream-documented playlist limit, not a YouTube-wide cap. Check the service’s current technical limits and plan terms before relying on a particular workflow.
Or let it run in the cloud
With StreamNeo, upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. StreamNeo loops uploaded videos to YouTube from the cloud; it does not broadcast from a camera. Nothing has to stay on at home, and the stream plays at the quality you uploaded, up to 4K 60fps, for one flat price per slot. If YouTube drops the stream, StreamNeo automatically attempts recovery. Do not rely on YouTube to archive a very long stream
YouTube Help says streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived, but streams exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. If you need to preserve the rerun, keep the source recording or make a separate local backup; this applies whether you use OBS or a hosted service.
Check game and soundtrack permissions separately
Whether game footage can be used commercially depends on the relevant publisher’s rights and terms. YouTube also requires streamers to have the necessary rights for livestream content, including music licensing rights. A game’s soundtrack may raise separate questions from permission to show gameplay, so check publisher terms and clear third-party audio before broadcasting. These general rules do not determine the rights for any particular game or recording.

A live rerun is not automatically monetizable
YouTube says its channel monetization policies apply to livestreams as well as other formats and require original, authentic content. Repetitive or mass-produced content may be ineligible, and reused-content rules are distinct from copyright enforcement. Owning a recording or having permission to stream it does not, by itself, guarantee monetization eligibility. YouTube’s game and software guidance also warns that “Videos simply showing a user playing a video game or the use of software for extended periods of time may not be accepted for monetization.” Commentary connected to gameplay, instructional value, and the specific rights granted by the publisher can matter; none guarantees approval.

Troubleshooting a gaming rerun
- YouTube does not receive a signal: Confirm live streaming is enabled, the right stream URL and key are being used, and the encoder is actually sending. If the channel is newly enabled for live streaming, allow for YouTube’s stated activation window of up to 24 hours.
- The wrong video or no audio appears: Check the OBS media source, playback state, audio routing, and YouTube preview before continuing the broadcast. A hosted playlist also needs the correct uploaded items and order.
- The stream stops when you close the laptop: That is expected for a local encoder workflow. Use a hosted playlist service if the stream must continue while your computer is off.
- The YouTube replay is missing: Check the broadcast duration. YouTube warns that a stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured; retain a separate copy when an archive matters.
- A stream is claimed, blocked, or unsuitable for monetization: Review game-publisher permissions, soundtrack and other third-party rights, and YouTube’s originality and reused-content policies. Changing from OBS to a hosted service does not resolve those underlying issues.
