A Windows update that restarts your PC interrupts an encoder-based YouTube stream. To reduce the risk, set Windows active hours to cover the stream, schedule any pending restart for a break, or temporarily pause updates before a long broadcast. After any reboot, check the encoder and YouTube Live Control Room; don’t assume the stream resumed by itself.
Prevent Windows from restarting during the stream
Windows provides controls to help place update restarts at a convenient time. The exact labels and locations can vary by Windows version and rollout, so use the controls shown in your installed version.
Set active hours
Open Settings > Windows Update and set active hours to include the full planned streaming window. Active hours help Windows avoid restarting during those hours; they do not permanently block updates or guarantee that no interruption can occur.
Schedule a pending restart for a break
If Windows Update is already waiting to restart, use its restart scheduling control to choose a time when the stream is not running. Leave enough time for Windows to finish installing updates and reboot before you start the encoder again.

Pause updates temporarily if needed
If you need more time before installing updates, temporarily pause updates in Settings > Windows Update. Pausing defers installation and restart; it is not a permanent way to disable updates. Updates resume when the pause expires or you resume them, so set a reminder to install them after the stream. Don’t leave security updates deferred indefinitely.
Check the YouTube stream and test recovery before relying on it
Confirm the intended broadcast
In YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, check that you have selected the right broadcast and destination. YouTube lets you reuse settings for a new stream, but confirm whether the selected broadcast is scheduled and that it is the one you mean to run. An encoder connects to YouTube using a stream URL and stream key. Treat the key like a password; don’t share it publicly.

Test the full reboot process
Before depending on unattended recovery, test your actual setup at a convenient time. Restart the PC, let Windows finish updating, and verify that the encoder opens, uses the correct scene and replay source, and connects to the intended YouTube stream. Check the Live Control Room preview before going live, then monitor stream health after startup. This test is a practical precaution, not a guarantee that every encoder setup will reconnect automatically.
YouTube recommends starting the encoder ahead of a scheduled event and checking the preview. If you want an update-free window for a planned stream, do the Windows scheduling or pause steps first, then confirm the broadcast and encoder before the event.

Restart the stream after an update
- Let Windows complete the update and restart. Don’t start the encoder while the update or reboot is still in progress.
- Open the encoder and confirm it is configured for the intended YouTube server and stream key. If a third-party encoder cannot start, YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance advises obtaining the stream key from Live Control Room and updating the encoder. Reset the key only if there is a connection problem or a security reason; if you reset it, update the encoder with the new key.
- Check the Live Control Room preview and stream health. Then verify the public or unlisted watch page and, if you are recording locally, check that the archive file is growing.
- If the encoder appears connected but viewers cannot see the replay, check that the selected YouTube broadcast is the intended one and that its preview is valid before troubleshooting the replay source itself.
Can OBS start streaming automatically after reboot?
OBS community discussion describes ways to open OBS at startup, including the Windows Startup folder or Task Scheduler, along with an OBS option to start streaming. That discussion is not official OBS documentation, and it does not establish a current guarantee that a YouTube broadcast will reconnect unattended after Windows restarts. It also cautions that reconnecting may fail if the initial connection fails.
If you try automatic startup, test the whole sequence with your installed OBS build and current YouTube broadcast workflow. Confirm that Windows has finished restarting, the correct scene and media source are loaded, the encoder connects to the correct stream, and YouTube shows a valid preview. Keep a manual recovery plan rather than treating autostart as proof the broadcast is live.

Know the archive limit for long gaming replays
YouTube’s encoder guidance says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. For a continuous replay longer than that, this guidance does not support a promise that the full stream will be archived. If you need a complete recording, keep a separate local recording and verify that the file is growing during the stream.
