How to Set a Static Devotional Image and Continuous Audio in OBS for YouTube Live

Use an OBS Image Source for a still devotional image and a looping Media Source for continuous audio, then test the stream in YouTube’s Live Control Room.

To show one devotional image while audio repeats in a YouTube Live stream, add the image as an OBS Image Source, add the audio file as a Media Source, and enable Loop. Connect OBS to YouTube with the Live Control Room server URL and stream key, then test the viewer-facing preview before the broadcast. This setup keeps the picture still; it does not require converting the image into a video.

Prepare the image, audio, and rights

Have the image and audio file available on the computer running OBS. Use material you created, licensed for this exact use, or are otherwise legally entitled to broadcast. A devotional subject does not make an image or recording copyright-free. Keep relevant license terms and permissions accessible during the stream.

YouTube scans live streams for third-party content. If it identifies content, it may show a warning and placeholder; persistent content may temporarily interrupt or terminate the stream. Even a licensed track may be interrupted unless the rights owner allowlists your channel. Check whether your permission covers live streaming on YouTube and whether allowlisting is needed. See YouTube’s guidance on copyright issues with live streams.

YouTube’s separate Content ID matching program has its own requirements, including exclusive rights for material enrolled in that program. Those requirements are not a blanket rule that every creator may broadcast only wholly self-created material. For this setup, clear the actual image and audio rights and follow any allowlisting conditions. See YouTube’s live Content ID matching requirements.

Build the OBS scene

  1. Create or select a scene. In OBS, use the Scenes panel to select an existing scene or add one for the broadcast.
  2. Add the still image. In Sources, select the plus button, choose Image, create or select an Image Source, and choose the devotional image file. In the preview, fit the image to the canvas and check that its framing looks right. Keep it below any optional text source so the text appears on top. OBS explains adding sources and their stacking order in its Sources Guide.
  3. Add the audio file. In Sources, select the plus button and choose Media Source. Create or select the source, browse to the local audio file, and enable Loop. OBS lists MP3, AAC, OGG, and WAV among supported formats. Keep the source active and visible in the scene. The audio meter in the OBS mixer should move during playback. See the OBS Media Sources guide.
  4. Check for duplicate audio capture. If you also use an audio capture source, avoid capturing the same device both there and under Settings > Audio; OBS warns that capturing it twice can cause echo. The OBS Audio Sources guide describes audio source options.
  5. Check the canvas and preview. Choose a landscape canvas and output suitable for your intended broadcast, then inspect the OBS preview for cropping or unwanted elements. The image remains static in the scene; it does not need to be rendered into a video file.

Choose an audio source for one file or a playlist

OBS source Best for Looping and requirements
Media Source One local audio file Enable Loop to restart the file when it ends. OBS supports formats including MP3, AAC, OGG, and WAV.
VLC Video Source A playlist of files Enable Loop Playlist to repeat the playlist. VLC must be installed, and its architecture should match OBS: 64-bit OBS needs 64-bit VLC.

For a single repeating track, Media Source is the simpler route. Use VLC Video Source when you need a playlist and playlist looping. OBS documents the Media Source in its Media Sources guide.

Connect OBS to YouTube Live

  1. Open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room. Create or select an encoder stream. If the channel is not yet set up for live streaming, review YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility and getting-started information.
  2. Copy the server URL and stream key. Enter them in OBS’s stream settings. Treat the key like a password: do not show it in a screen capture or share it with viewers.
  3. Start an OBS test and wait for YouTube’s preview. Confirm the still image appears and the stream connects before starting the public broadcast. YouTube’s encoder setup guide and live stream settings guidance explain the corresponding YouTube workflow.

Set encoder output and test the connection

Use YouTube’s current encoder recommendations as a starting point, not a guarantee that a particular computer or internet connection will sustain the stream. The settings page lists H.264, H.265 (HEVC), or AV1 video; AAC or MP3 audio; CBR bitrate encoding; and a recommended keyframe interval of 2 seconds, not exceeding 4 seconds. For stereo audio, its advanced settings list a 44.1 kHz sample rate and 128 kbps audio bitrate.

H.264 example from YouTube’s settings Recommended video bitrate
1080p at 30 fps 5 Mbps
720p at 30 fps 3 Mbps

These are YouTube recommendations on its encoder settings page, checked 2026-10-03. Choose resolution and bitrate according to your upload capacity and test the actual output. YouTube recommends keeping 20% upload-bandwidth headroom on its streaming tips page. It also recommends running a speed test to check upload bitrate. YouTube transcodes live streams into multiple output formats, but stable ingest from OBS is still necessary.

Before the real broadcast, test with the same image and audio behavior you plan to use. Check that the OBS mixer meter moves, the YouTube preview shows the image, viewers can hear the stream audio, and stream health is stable. OBS recommends a short test rather than jumping straight into a first broadcast in its Quick Start Guide. YouTube likewise advises testing audio and video movement similar to the planned stream in its encoder settings guidance.

Troubleshoot common problems

  • The image is missing, cropped, or covered. Check that the Image Source points to the intended file, fit it to the canvas, and review source order. A source higher in the list can appear over the image.
  • The audio stops at the end of the file. Reopen the Media Source properties and enable Loop. Confirm the source remains active in the scene.
  • The OBS meter moves, but viewers hear nothing. Check YouTube’s preview and the stream’s audio output rather than relying on the local meter alone. Review OBS audio settings and make sure the intended source is routed to the stream.
  • The audio echoes. Check for the same device being captured both by a scene audio source and in Settings > Audio; remove the duplicate capture.
  • VLC playlist looping is unavailable or fails. Confirm VLC is installed and matches OBS’s architecture; 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC. For a single file, use Media Source instead.
  • YouTube flags or interrupts the stream. Check that you have the required live-broadcast rights for both image and audio, and whether the rights owner must allowlist your channel. A paid or licensed track is not automatically exempt from live Content ID interruptions.
  • The stream drops frames or will not remain stable. Compare the selected bitrate with measured upload capacity, preserve YouTube’s recommended 20% bandwidth headroom, and test at the intended resolution and frame rate. Reduce output demands if your connection cannot sustain the chosen profile.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is an always-on YouTube channel playing uploaded recordings rather than a live OBS scene, StreamNeo is a cloud alternative: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops uploaded videos; it does not broadcast a camera. Nothing has to stay on at home, it streams the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one price per slot, and it can automatically recover if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month.
