You can run a continuous mantra playlist from a Linux VPS by creating a YouTube Live event, placing the media files on the server, and sending them to YouTube over RTMPS with an encoder such as FFmpeg. The VPS keeps the encoder independent of your home computer, but it does not make a stream self-healing by itself: you still need to supervise the process, monitor the broadcast, and secure the rights to the recordings and visuals.
What you need before starting
- A YouTube channel with live streaming enabled and verified. YouTube says the channel must not have had a live-streaming restriction in the preceding 90 days.
- A Linux VPS where the source files are available and an encoder can run. No universal VPS size or bandwidth budget is established for this workflow; requirements depend on your media and target stream settings.
- A playlist or other pre-produced media you have the rights to transmit and archive.
- The current RTMPS ingestion details for your YouTube event or channel. Treat the stream key as a password.
YouTube distinguishes a broadcast, the event or video on the channel, from a stream, the incoming audio-video feed. YouTube documents a 24/7 channel feed as a use case. A single stream can also be associated with multiple broadcasts, each of which is a distinct video. See YouTube Live Streaming API documentation and YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility help.
Set up the YouTube broadcast
- Enable and verify live streaming. In YouTube Studio, confirm live streaming is available for the channel and complete any verification or activation steps shown. Check for restrictions before planning a continuous event.
- Choose the event structure. Create one continuous broadcast if you want one ongoing event and archive. Schedule separate broadcasts if you want distinct event videos; the incoming stream may be reused, but each broadcast remains separate.
- Open the event’s encoder settings. Use the ingestion URL and stream name shown by YouTube for the event or channel. Labels and settings can change, so copy the current values from YouTube Studio rather than relying on an old command or tutorial.
- Keep the key private. Store it in a protected environment or service configuration accessible only to the encoder. Do not put a real key in a public shell command, screenshot, repository, or shared log. If exposed, replace it in YouTube Studio.
YouTube specifies RTMPS over TLS/SSL on port 443 and describes RTMPS as a good choice for most ordinary content, particularly when low latency matters. HLS and DASH are also documented ingestion options, but they add segmented-delivery complexity that is unnecessary for a basic encoder-to-YouTube setup. See YouTube’s ingestion protocol guide and Delivering Live YouTube Content via RTMPS.
Put the playlist media on the VPS
The encoder running on the VPS must be able to read every source file at its server-side path. You can prepare the files elsewhere and transfer them to the server, but the specific transfer method is your choice; the important point is that the running process can access the media for the whole broadcast.

- Use stable, predictable file paths and verify that the VPS account running FFmpeg can read them.
- Check that the playlist order and filenames are correct before starting a long session.
- Keep a separate backup of your source media if losing the server copy would be costly. An external hard drive can serve as a local backup or transfer device; it is not a streaming requirement once files are on the VPS.
- Check available disk space and plan how you will handle logs and any local recordings so they do not fill the server disk.
Configure FFmpeg and start the feed
FFmpeg can process media and send a network output, making it a plausible encoder for a VPS workflow. The exact command depends on the installed FFmpeg build, input formats, playlist behavior, and YouTube’s current encoder guidance. The official material available for this workflow does not establish a universally suitable playlist command or specific bitrate, resolution, keyframe interval, or server size. Do not copy a command that assumes your files or build behave the same way; validate the input and encoder settings against YouTube’s current event guidance.
- Install or provide an FFmpeg build suitable for your Linux distribution and media formats.
- Prepare a playlist source that FFmpeg can read, with server paths and ordering checked. Confirm how the chosen input handles the end of the list and looping before relying on it for continuous playback.
- Configure the output for the event’s current YouTube RTMPS URL and stream name. Supply credentials through a protected mechanism, not in material that may be exposed.
- Start with an unlisted or otherwise controlled test event when appropriate. Confirm that the YouTube preview shows both audio and video before making the broadcast public.
- Only after the test behaves as expected, configure the intended continuous broadcast and arrange for the encoder to run under process supervision.
FFmpeg’s documentation includes an RTMP FIFO muxer example with real-time pacing and recovery attempts after temporary network failures. That mechanism may reduce some interruptions; it is not a guarantee of uptime, and it does not remove failures caused by the VPS, network, source files, encoder, or YouTube event. See FFmpeg’s FIFO muxer documentation.

Keep the VPS stream supervised
A persistent command is not the same as a dependable service. Arrange process supervision so you know when the encoder exits and can restart it deliberately, preserve logs, watch disk space, and alert on failure. The appropriate service manager and monitoring setup depend on your Linux image and hosting environment; no particular systemd unit or monitoring vendor is required by the workflow.
- Test what happens when FFmpeg exits unexpectedly.
- Test a temporary network interruption and confirm whether the encoder reconnects and YouTube accepts the resumed feed.
- Test what happens when the playlist reaches its end or a media file is missing.
- If you configure a backup encoder, test failover rather than assuming it works.
- Monitor the stream continuously for audio and video quality, and check that the archive is growing as intended.
YouTube advises creators to preview before going live, test encoder failover if configured, and continuously monitor stream quality. See YouTube live streaming tips.

Protect music and visual rights
For a mantra playlist, rights may apply separately to the composition, recording, performance, artwork, and any other visual material. Confirm that your permissions cover live transmission and any archive, in the territories where the content will be available. YouTube’s live terms make the content provider responsible for necessary rights, including music licensing, and require compliance with Community Guidelines. Copyright strikes or a match to copyrighted live content can lead to restrictions, including limits on live streaming. Read YouTube’s terms and conditions and YouTube’s live-streaming restrictions help.

| Approach | What viewers and archives get | When it fits |
|---|---|---|
| One continuous 24/7 broadcast | One ongoing event/video and its associated archive behavior | Use when the channel should present a single uninterrupted feed. |
| Separate scheduled broadcasts | Distinct broadcast videos; a stream can be reused for more than one broadcast | Use when each session should have its own event and archive identity. |
These are different publishing choices, not different media pipelines. Confirm archive behavior on your own channel and event before making a long-running public schedule.
