Not with OBS alone. OBS needs a powered computer—local or remote—to play the prerecorded video, encode it and send it to YouTube Live. You can avoid keeping a local PC running by using a cloud streaming service or compatible dedicated hardware. If “without a logged-in PC” means no person at the controls, that is a separate issue: a scheduled YouTube broadcast may still need someone to click Go live unless the current Auto-start settings and workflow allow it to start unattended.
What “without a logged-in PC” can mean
- No one signed in at the computer: The key requirement is that an encoder host stays powered, connected and able to run the stream. Whether a desktop session remains signed in depends on the computer and OBS setup; the source guidance does not establish a universal unattended-login configuration.
- No person present to start the broadcast: Scheduling an event does not by itself prove that it will start unattended. YouTube’s documented workflow includes waiting for the preview and clicking Go live. Check the current Auto-start controls in your YouTube and OBS setup before relying on an unattended start.
- No local computer running: OBS on your own PC cannot do this by itself. A cloud service or suitable standalone hardware can take over the playing, encoding and transmission instead.
YouTube Help defines an encoder as software or hardware that converts video into a digital format for streaming. OBS is the encoder software in this workflow; it does not host itself or transmit a file without a running machine.
Choose how the prerecorded video will reach YouTube

OBS on a local computer
Load the recording into OBS as a media source, configure the YouTube destination, and start streaming. The computer must remain on, connected to the internet and capable of playing and encoding the video for as long as the stream runs. This is the route that preserves direct access to OBS scenes and sources, but it does not meet a requirement to leave the local computer off.
Cloud services
YouTube Help’s encoder directory identifies Gyre as a cloud tool for 24/7 prerecorded YouTube videos and Upstream as a cloud studio for 24/7 live video streaming. These examples indicate that the cloud can replace the local host; they do not establish either service’s current plan limits, pricing, upload rules, scheduling behavior or recovery features. Check those details with the provider before choosing a service.

Dedicated hardware
YouTube’s encoder directory describes AJA PlayToStream as functionality for scheduling prerecorded media to YouTube Live without a computer, and separately lists the AJA HELO Plus as a standalone H.264 encoder. That does not establish that every HELO Plus model, firmware version or package includes PlayToStream. Confirm the exact device and feature with AJA before buying for this use.
Set up OBS for a prerecorded YouTube stream
- Create or schedule the broadcast in YouTube Studio. Set the event details and choose the broadcast workflow appropriate to your channel. A scheduled event is not proof of automatic start; the documented YouTube flow includes a manual Go live action after preview appears.
- Get the YouTube server URL and stream key. Enter them in OBS’s streaming settings, or use OBS’s YouTube account integration if available in your current version. Treat the key like a password: do not show it in screenshots, share it publicly or leave it in public documents.
- Add the recording in OBS. Add the video as a media source and verify that it plays through from beginning to end, with the intended audio. For a looping broadcast, check the source’s loop behavior and monitor it rather than assuming that the source will restart as intended.
- Use YouTube’s recommended connection and encoder settings. YouTube recommends RTMPS, an encrypted extension of RTMP. For H.264, its current encoder guide recommends 14 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps and 17 Mbps for 1080p at 60 fps. These are recommendations, not guarantees; select settings your upload connection can sustain steadily.
- Test before the event. Use representative motion and audio, then check the YouTube preview and stream-health indicators. The upload connection, computer and encoder must all remain stable for the stream’s duration.
- Start and monitor the broadcast. In YouTube’s documented scheduled workflow, wait for the preview and click Go live. If nobody will be present, verify the current Auto-start settings and test the actual unattended workflow first; do not infer that scheduling alone will start the stream.
Recurring broadcasts and stream reuse
Google’s YouTube Live Streaming API documentation describes reusing a configured stream across scheduled or recurring broadcasts by binding it to multiple broadcast events. In the documented common use case, only one event is live at a time. This API workflow can reduce repeated configuration for developers, but it still requires an active encoder to send the video.

Plan for duration, connection and archiving
- Keep the encoder online: With local OBS, a shutdown, lost internet connection or inability to play the file interrupts the stream. A remote host or hardware appliance changes where that dependency sits; neither removes the need for a powered, connected encoder.
- Match bitrate to sustained upload capacity: YouTube’s recommended H.264 figures are 14 Mbps for 1080p30 and 17 Mbps for 1080p60. Leave practical headroom rather than treating the recommendation as a minimum your connection must barely meet.
- Do not assume a long stream will be archived: YouTube Help says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That source does not establish the same guarantee for streams lasting 12 hours or more. Decide how you will preserve the recording before running a longer broadcast.
- Check restart and recovery behavior: A scheduled event, a continuous 24/7 stream and a stream that resumes after a disconnect are different operating requirements. Confirm how the chosen setup handles each one.
- Use content you have rights to stream: A prerecorded file is still subject to YouTube’s copyright rules. Confirm that you have the necessary rights to the video, music and other material, and review YouTube’s current policies before broadcasting.

Common problems and what to check
- The broadcast is scheduled but viewers see nothing: Check whether YouTube is waiting for the preview and a manual Go live action. Confirm current Auto-start behavior rather than assuming the event starts when its scheduled time arrives.
- YouTube does not receive the stream: Verify the server URL and stream key in OBS, confirm the key belongs to the intended broadcast, and check that the encoder is actively streaming. If the key may have been exposed, replace it in YouTube and update OBS.
- The stream health is poor or the video drops: Check for a stable upload connection and whether the computer can sustain the chosen settings. Compare the configured H.264 bitrate with YouTube’s recommendations for your resolution and frame rate, then test again with representative motion and audio.
- The video or audio stops when the computer sleeps or shuts down: Local OBS depends on the host computer staying powered and connected. Prevent sleep or use a cloud host or dedicated encoder if the local machine cannot remain available.
- A hardware listing does not show the prerecorded feature you need: Do not assume that the HELO Plus listing means PlayToStream is included. Ask AJA to confirm compatibility for the exact model, firmware and configuration.
- A very long broadcast is missing an expected archive: YouTube’s cited automatic-archive statement covers streams under 12 hours, not a guaranteed archive for longer streams. Check the recording and preservation plan before relying on YouTube alone.
