YouTube’s official Help guidance does not specify a guaranteed maximum runtime for a live broadcast. The 12-hour mark is an archive-and-playback warning, not proof that YouTube automatically ends a stream: streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured, and DVR rewind may be limited or unavailable. If the live video needs a complete recording, keep a separate local copy.
Does YouTube automatically stop a live stream after 12 hours?
YouTube’s current Help pages do not state a maximum duration for an always-on broadcast or say that a live stream is automatically stopped at 12 hours. The 12-hour guidance concerns what viewers and creators may be able to do with the stream afterward: archive capture and DVR rewind.
| Question | What YouTube’s guidance says |
|---|---|
| How long can the broadcast run? | No guaranteed always-on maximum is stated in the Help pages reviewed. |
| Will YouTube save a stream longer than 12 hours? | It may not be captured at all. YouTube does not say every longer stream will be lost or guarantee capture for every shorter stream. YouTube Help: Archive live streams |
| Can viewers rewind a stream longer than 12 hours? | DVR capabilities may be limited or unavailable. YouTube Help: DVR on live streams |
For an always-on channel, distinguish continuity from the recording. A broadcast may continue even when its platform archive is uncertain; the 12-hour threshold is not documented as a signal to end the live session.
What the 12-hour threshold means for archives and DVR
Automatic archive capture
YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived, and warns that a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. This is a conditional warning, not a promise that every stream under the threshold will be saved or that every stream over it will be missing. The archive guidance applies to encoder, webcam, and mobile streams. It also notes that 1440p and 2160p (4K) streams are automatically archived; that resolution note does not override the warning for streams longer than 12 hours. Read YouTube’s archive guidance.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
DVR and rewind
For streams longer than 12 hours, YouTube says DVR capabilities may be limited or unavailable. That affects rewind during the live broadcast; it is distinct from whether YouTube captures an archive after the stream ends. Read YouTube’s DVR guidance.
How to protect a complete recording of a long broadcast
If the full program matters—for example, a documentary marathon, continuous channel feed, or live event—treat YouTube’s archive as convenient, not as your only copy.

- Record locally as well as streaming. YouTube’s streaming tips advise keeping a local archive backup. Choose a recording destination with enough free space for the expected duration; an external drive is optional, not a YouTube requirement.
- Confirm the recording is actually being written. Check that the local file exists and its size is growing while the broadcast is underway. YouTube recommends checking local archive integrity and file growth. YouTube live streaming tips
- Verify the saved file. After the stream, check that the recording opens and covers the intended period before deleting or reusing the source material.
Ending and restarting the broadcast every 12 hours is not a documented guarantee of archive success. YouTube’s reviewed guidance does not prescribe a restart schedule or promise that repeated shorter sessions will always be captured.
Does streaming method or resolution change the 12-hour warning?
YouTube documents live streaming from mobile, webcam, and encoder setups. Its archive guidance covers those methods, and the reviewed pages do not say that an encoder, webcam, mobile device, or a particular resolution changes the archive or DVR cautions for streams over 12 hours. Encoder choice is about production needs: YouTube says encoders can support gameplay, overlays, and other higher-production events, and recommends professional-grade hardware encoders for higher production value.
