Then diagnose each stage with its own service signals: MediaConnect for transport and ingest, MediaLive for channel and encoding health, and MediaPackage for packaging quality and output requests. A signal map helps locate a fault in the AWS path; it does not by itself prove that a viewer received and played the stream.
Build an end-to-end view with Workflow Monitor
AWS Elemental Workflow Monitor discovers connected resources from a supported starting resource and displays them and their connections in a signal map. Its discovery list includes MediaConnect, MediaLive, MediaPackage, MediaTailor, Amazon S3, and Amazon CloudFront. You can use the map as a resource view on its own or add monitoring templates.
The Workflow Monitor overview provides a high-level view of signal-map monitoring state and associated metrics and logs. Open a map to review its CloudWatch alarms, EventBridge rules, AWS Elemental alerts, metrics, logs, and basic resource details. Selecting a resource node can take you to that service’s details page. Thumbnail previews may be available for some MediaLive channels and MediaPackage endpoints.
AWS provides recommended alarm templates as starting points, and teams can create custom templates. Templates can be deployed with CloudFormation. Treat the map as the index for the workflow and the service consoles and metrics as the diagnostic tools: an end-to-end diagram does not replace service-specific health checks.

Choose alarms that match the workflow
An alarm template identifies the target resource and CloudWatch metric, then configures the statistic, comparison operator, threshold, evaluation period, number of datapoints, and treatment of missing data. These settings determine how quickly an alarm reacts and how much noise it produces. Set them against the expected range and impact of failure for that particular workflow, rather than copying a threshold from an unrelated stream.
AWS’s alarm-template guidance includes a MediaConnect disconnection example. It illustrates the configuration, not a universal threshold recommendation. Decide explicitly what missing data means for each metric: no datapoints could reflect a failed resource, an inactive path, or a metric that is not emitted in the current state.

Trace the stream stage by stage
Transport and ingest: MediaConnect
MediaConnect publishes CloudWatch metrics for flow health, source health, and outputs. For a connected source, its console reports source bitrate and the total packets received. If the source is disconnected, first check that the upstream system is sending, then verify the flow source settings, including the allowlist CIDR and protocol configuration. See AWS’s source-health guidance and CloudWatch metric reference.
Choose output metrics for the protocol and downstream connection in use. For example, ConnectedOutputs applies to Zixi or SRT outputs; retransmission metrics are documented for SRT or MediaLive outputs. A metric’s existence does not mean it applies to every protocol or output type.

The MediaConnect guide says most metrics can be accessed using periods as short as one second; Gateway metrics require at least one minute. These are metric-period capabilities, not a guaranteed end-to-end detection or notification time.
Encoding and channel operation: MediaLive
Use the MediaLive console, CloudWatch metrics, channel events, CloudWatch Logs, and CloudTrail API activity for different views of channel operation. AWS groups MediaLive CloudWatch metrics into global, input, MQCS, output, and pipeline-locking categories. Choose signals according to the failure being detected—for example, whether input is arriving, output is healthy, or pipeline locking has changed—rather than treating one metric as a complete channel-health verdict. The MediaLive monitoring overview and metric guide describe the available views. AWS says MediaLive CloudWatch metrics are retained for 15 months.

MediaLive can emit channel or multiplex state information and alerts as events that can be routed through event rules, such as to a notification destination. AWS cautions: “Note that events are emitted on a best-effort basis.” Use events as a notification path, not as a guaranteed record of every health change; pair them with metric alarms and service checks. See AWS’s event monitoring documentation.
Packaging and origin: MediaPackage
For MediaPackage v2, live-content metrics are published in the AWS/MediaPackage namespace every minute or sooner. Quality measures include ChannelMQCS and ChannelMQCSSequence; other metrics describe egress and requests. Dimensions can narrow a metric to a channel, endpoint, request type (manifest or segment), status-code group, or track type (video, audio, or subtitle). Use those dimensions to distinguish a quality problem from an output-request problem, or to narrow an issue to a track or endpoint. The MediaPackage v2 metric guide says statistics are retained for 15 months.

MediaPackage’s monitoring documentation also covers CloudTrail for API auditing, access logging, and EventBridge events. See Logging and monitoring in MediaPackage v2.
Delivery and viewer playback
Workflow Monitor’s supported discovery list includes CloudFront and S3, so a signal map can include those parts of a workflow when they are connected supported resources. That map does not establish that the viewer’s device received and played the stream. Add delivery- and player-side checks suited to your architecture; investigate the AWS path and the viewer-facing path as separate evidence.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Use a fault-isolation sequence
- Locate the first unhealthy node. Open the signal map and inspect its resource state, alarms, alerts, metrics, and logs. Follow the connections in stream order rather than starting with the last visible symptom.
- Check the source and transport. At MediaConnect, confirm source connectivity, bitrate, and packet receipt. If disconnected, verify upstream transmission and source configuration, including allowlist and protocol.
- Check channel inputs and outputs. At MediaLive, inspect relevant input, output, global, MQCS, or pipeline-locking metrics, then consult channel alerts, events, and logs for context.
- Check packaging requests and quality. At MediaPackage, compare quality metrics with request and egress measures. Narrow by endpoint, manifest versus segment, status-code group, and track type where applicable.
- Check the delivery and playback boundary. If the AWS service path looks healthy but viewers still report failure, verify delivery and player behavior independently; a signal map alone cannot confirm successful playback.
Compare signals without confusing their timing
| Layer | Useful evidence | Timing or applicability caveat |
|---|---|---|
| MediaConnect transport and ingest | Flow, source, and output metrics; connected-source bitrate and packet count | Most metrics support periods as short as one second; Gateway metrics require at least one minute. Output metrics vary by protocol. |
| MediaLive encoding and channel | Global, input, MQCS, output, and pipeline-locking metrics; alerts, events, and logs | Events are best effort. Metrics are retained for 15 months according to AWS’s monitoring guide. |
| MediaPackage packaging and origin | Quality, egress, and request metrics, filtered by resource, request, status, or track dimensions | v2 live metrics publish every minute or sooner; statistics are retained for 15 months according to AWS’s guide. |
These periods describe service-specific metric behavior, not directly comparable end-to-end alert latency guarantees. When reviewing an alarm, consider the metric period, statistic, threshold, required datapoints, missing-data treatment, and the delivery behavior of any event notification.
Understand monitoring costs
AWS says Workflow Monitor itself has no direct cost. However, monitoring deployments create CloudWatch and EventBridge resources, store CloudFormation templates in an S3 bucket, and may incur MediaPackage preview data-transfer charges. Check current CloudWatch, EventBridge, S3, and MediaPackage pricing for the relevant region and design before deploying; there is no single static monitoring price that applies to every workflow.
Or let it run in the cloud
AWS Workflow Monitor is for observing supported AWS media resources; it is not a service for keeping a YouTube channel live by looping uploaded recordings. For that separate use case, StreamNeo runs uploaded videos or playlists as a YouTube-only 24/7 stream: upload, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; video streams as uploaded at any quality up to 4K 60fps at one price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. Start the free day with StreamNeo.
