Schedule the broadcasts in YouTube Studio, then arrange for OBS or another playout system to load the correct playlist for each day. If you need that switch to happen without an operator, you need a separate scheduler or cloud playout setup.
Two schedules are involved
A scheduled YouTube broadcast creates an event and its watch page. The encoder or playout system supplies the audio and video. Those are separate jobs: scheduling a broadcast does not tell OBS which media playlist to play on Monday, Tuesday, or any other day. YouTube’s encoder workflow covers creating and starting an event; OBS’s media-source documentation covers playlist playback, not weekday calendar scheduling.
- YouTube event schedule: when a broadcast is planned and which watch page viewers can visit.
- Media schedule: which playlist the encoder or playout system sends at that time.
For a manual weekly routine, create the events in advance and load the matching playlist before each one. For an unattended routine, configure and test an additional automation or recurring playout layer.
Set up a weekly schedule manually with YouTube Studio and OBS
1. Create an event for each day
- In YouTube Studio, open Create > Go Live > Manage > Schedule stream.
- Set the date, time, visibility, title, description, and other event details. Create a separate event for each day that needs its own scheduled broadcast or watch page.
- If you use Reuse settings, review the copied details before saving. YouTube says this copies the previous stream’s metadata, settings, and stream key, with an opportunity to edit after creation. Do not assume the old title, date, description, or key should be retained. See YouTube’s live-stream settings guidance.
Scheduled streams can be promoted and shared by URL, and YouTube says viewers can set reminders for them. These audience-facing benefits belong to the event schedule; they do not select the media playlist.

2. Prepare the day’s playlist in OBS
- Install VLC on the computer running OBS; OBS requires it for the VLC Video source to appear.
- In the relevant OBS scene, add a VLC Video source and select the media files for that day’s playlist.
- Leave shuffle off if the order matters. Choose whether to enable looping based on whether the playlist should start over after its final item.
- Repeat or prepare distinct scenes/playlists for the other days, then verify that each one contains the intended files and plays in the expected order.
OBS documents multiple media items, ordered playback by default, and optional loop or shuffle behavior. It does not document a built-in weekday calendar that automatically selects a different playlist each day.
3. Connect and start the scheduled broadcast
- Before the event, select or load that day’s playlist in OBS. This is a separate action from scheduling the YouTube event.
- Connect OBS to the scheduled event using its stream connection details. Keep the stream key private, especially if you reused settings and the key was copied.
- Start streaming from OBS. In YouTube Live Control Room, wait until the incoming preview appears, then click Go live when you are ready to begin the event.
- When the broadcast is finished, end it in Live Control Room and stop sending from OBS.
YouTube’s documented encoder flow includes starting the encoder, waiting for the preview, and clicking Go live. Do not assume that creating an event alone will make an encoder-based broadcast start unattended.

4. Repeat for the rest of the week
Use a checklist or calendar that pairs each event with its playlist, time, and operator action. If the schedule crosses time zones or changes seasonally, make the time zone explicit in that operating plan and confirm the event times in Studio. YouTube streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; that guidance should not be generalized to streams lasting 12 hours or longer.
Make weekday playlist changes automatic
Recurring cloud playout
A recurring cloud playout system may suit a schedule that should run without someone manually changing playlists. Upstream’s help documentation describes daily or weekly recurrence and playlist-related behavior, including ending a stream when a playlist finishes: How To Schedule A YouTube Live Stream. That is a vendor’s description of its own service, not an independent performance assessment. Before relying on it, confirm that its current setup supports the exact weekday changes, time zone, transitions, YouTube event/watch-page behavior, and recovery behavior you need; also check current pricing and availability.

API-based automation
Google’s YouTube Live Streaming API represents scheduled broadcasts as liveBroadcast resources and delivery settings as liveStream resources. An API-based system can manage those resources, but it still needs a separate mechanism to select and transmit the right media playlist at the right time. The API is not, by itself, a media playlist scheduler. See the YouTube Live Streaming API reference.
What to verify before leaving it unattended
- Does the setup choose the correct playlist for every weekday, including after a restart?
- Which time zone controls the schedule, and what happens when local time changes?
- Does each day need its own YouTube event and watch page, or is one continuing event intended?
- What happens when a playlist ends: stop, loop, or move to another item?
- How are transitions, missing files, and YouTube connection failures handled?
- Does the configuration require an operator to click Go live in Live Control Room?
Troubleshoot common setup problems
- The right event starts with the wrong video: The YouTube event and OBS playlist are managed separately. Load or select the intended playlist before streaming.
- VLC Video is missing from OBS: Install VLC on the computer running OBS, then reopen OBS and check the source list.
- Playlist order is unpredictable: Turn shuffle off and check the order of the media items in the VLC Video source.
- The playlist stops after its last file: Enable looping if it should repeat. If it should end the broadcast instead, verify that the playout setup supports that behavior.
- YouTube does not show an incoming preview: Check that OBS is sending to the stream details for the intended event, that the encoder is running, and that the connection details are correct. Wait for the preview before using Go live.
- A reused event has incorrect details: Recheck its copied metadata, settings, and stream key; edit the event rather than assuming the previous setup fits.
- A broadcast is not archived as expected: YouTube’s automatic-archive guidance applies to streams under 12 hours. It does not establish the same outcome for longer streams.
