For a YouTube loop stream, use Shutter Encoder to prepare a clean video file—not to assume the file will repeat or that its export settings alone configure a live broadcast. For a broadly compatible SDR file, choose H.264, preserve the source’s aspect ratio and frame rate where practical, review the audio and loop boundary, and select file quality or bitrate according to the file-size and quality you need. Then use a separate, verified playback or streaming method to repeat the file and meet YouTube’s live-encoder requirements.
What Shutter Encoder does—and what it does not establish
Shutter Encoder documents video conversion controls, including H.264 output, and a Stream output that can send video to a web platform over RTMP. Its documentation does not establish that it can repeat a source indefinitely, nor does it describe a named YouTube loop-stream preset. Treat file preparation, continuous playback, and live ingest as separate parts of the setup.
The settings below distinguish an offline file from the live stream sent to YouTube. YouTube’s live bitrate recommendations apply to that incoming live stream; they are not universal export targets for a file that will later be streamed. Shutter Encoder’s available controls are described in its documentation (dated 27 January 2026); consult YouTube’s live encoder settings guidance for current ingest requirements.
Choose Shutter Encoder settings for the prepared file
Codec: H.264 for a compatible SDR workflow
For an SDR workflow where compatibility is the priority, select H.264. Shutter Encoder documents H.264 conversion, and YouTube lists H.264 as a supported live codec. YouTube also lists HEVC and AV1 for live ingest, but their suitability depends on the encoder and playback path you will actually use. Do not select a live codec merely because it appears in YouTube’s ingest guidance if your chosen playback setup cannot send it.

Scale and aspect ratio: preserve the intended picture
Keep the source’s intended aspect ratio. Shutter Encoder’s Scale options include Adapt, Stretch, and Crop: Adapt adds bars when the input does not match the selected scale, Stretch distorts the image, and Crop removes excess pixels. Choose the option that preserves the picture you intend viewers to see; do not stretch or crop by accident. If you do not need to change the frame size, avoid scaling just to match a live bitrate recommendation.
Frame rate and scan: avoid unnecessary conversion
Retain the source frame rate when practical. YouTube recommends progressive scan for live ingest and supports up to 60 fps. Shutter Encoder offers frame-rate conversion controls, but conversion can drop or synthesize frames depending on the method. Convert only when your output workflow requires it, then inspect motion for judder, duplicate frames, or other artifacts.

File bitrate or quality: choose for the file, not by copying live figures
Shutter Encoder exposes VBR, CBR, and CQ/CRF controls. For an offline file, choose a quality or bitrate target based on the source, desired file size, and visual inspection. The appropriate value depends on content and encoding choices; YouTube’s live table does not determine the right offline export setting. A live encoder’s CBR setting and bitrate target belong to the separate transmission stage.
Audio: check the whole file and the join between loops
YouTube accepts AAC or MP3 for live ingest. Its advanced live settings recommend stereo audio at 128 Kbps and a 44.1 kHz sample rate. Check that the prepared file’s audio is mapped as intended and listen through the full clip, including its ending and beginning. A silent gap, abrupt cut, level change, or speech clipped at the boundary will be repeated each time the video loops.

Color and bit depth: keep SDR and HDR guidance distinct
For SDR, YouTube recommends Rec. 709 and 8-bit. Its guidance recommends H.265 for HDR and says AV1 is not supported for HDR in this specification. These are live-ingest recommendations, not a reason to convert an SDR source to HDR. Preserve the source’s intended color treatment and choose a compatible output path.
Fast start: useful for file startup, not a loop or live preset
Shutter Encoder’s Enable fast start option moves video header information to the beginning of the file for streaming performance. It may help a player start file playback sooner, but it does not make a file loop indefinitely or, by itself, satisfy YouTube’s live-ingest settings.

Set the separate YouTube live stream parameters
Once a playback or streaming method is selected, configure the stream that actually reaches YouTube. For H.264, YouTube’s current guidance lists these recommendations:
| Live output | YouTube H.264 bitrate recommendation |
|---|---|
| 720p30 | 6 Mbps |
| 720p60 | 6 Mbps |
| 1080p30 | 10 Mbps |
| 1080p60 | 12 Mbps |
These are YouTube live-ingest recommendations, not guaranteed visual-quality outcomes or universal file-export targets. For other resolutions, frame rates, or codecs, use the full YouTube settings table and allow for the stability of the upload connection.

- Rate control: YouTube specifies CBR for live streaming.
- Keyframes: YouTube recommends a two-second frequency and says not to exceed four seconds. This is a live-stream parameter. Shutter Encoder documents a GOP control, but the reviewed documentation does not say that a loop-stream preset sets YouTube’s interval automatically.

- Audio: Use a supported AAC or MP3 path and check the recommended stereo settings against your selected live encoder.
Prepare, loop, and test the stream
- Inspect the source. Confirm its resolution, aspect ratio, frame rate, scan, audio mapping, and SDR or HDR status. Decide which properties you need to retain before converting.
- Set up conversion in Shutter Encoder. Choose H.264 for a compatible SDR file, select a scale behavior that does not unintentionally distort or crop the image, and retain the source frame rate where practical. Choose a file quality or bitrate target for the storage and visual-quality trade-off you want.
- Encode and review the complete file. Watch and listen through it, paying particular attention to the start-to-end transition and audio. Fast start can affect playback startup, but does not supply the repeat behavior.
- Set up repetition separately unless your playback method has a verified loop function. Shutter Encoder documents Stream output as RTMP output and gives a YouTube RTMP URL example, but its reviewed documentation does not establish indefinite repeat behavior. Verify that the chosen player or streaming setup repeats continuously before relying on it for a long-running broadcast.
- Configure the live encoder for the selected YouTube output. Set the resolution, frame rate, codec, CBR, bitrate, audio, and two-second keyframe interval as appropriate to the workflow. Use RTMPS where supported and keep the stream key in the encoder or service that sends the stream; do not expose it publicly.
- Test before going live. YouTube’s instruction is: “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.” Test representative movement and audio, confirm the loop transition, and watch YouTube’s stream health before relying on the broadcast.
Common problems and fixes
- The image looks stretched or loses content: Check the selected Scale behavior. Use Adapt if bars are preferable to distortion or cropping; use Stretch or Crop only when that result is intended.
- Motion looks uneven after export: Compare the output frame rate with the source. If conversion was unnecessary, retain the source rate and encode again; inspect any chosen conversion method for dropped or synthesized frames.
- The file starts slowly: Try Enable fast start and test playback. This helps with file startup behavior; it does not provide continuous looping.
- There is a visible or audible jump at each repeat: Review the file’s first and last frames and the audio around the boundary. Correct the edit or prepare a more suitable seamless transition, then test it in the actual looping setup.
- YouTube reports poor stream health: Check the live encoder’s CBR target, resolution, frame rate, and connection stability against YouTube’s guidance. Do not assume that an offline file bitrate is the live bitrate.
- The stream does not repeat: Confirm that repetition is enabled in the separate playback or streaming method. Shutter Encoder’s reviewed documentation does not confirm indefinite looping.
Keep copyright and channel rules in view
Preparing a file does not grant permission to broadcast its contents. Before using music, footage, or other material in a loop, make sure you have the rights and permissions needed for the live use. YouTube’s live guidance covers encoder configuration, not the legal rights to a video or whether a channel’s content meets YouTube’s other policies. Review the applicable YouTube rules for your channel and content rather than treating successful encoding as approval to stream.
