Import the silent video and AAC audio file into a video editor, align the audio with the picture, then export and check the combined video before uploading it in YouTube Studio. For a conventional MP4 upload, YouTube recommends AAC-LC audio at 48 kHz with H.264 video. If by “streaming” you mean a YouTube Live broadcast rather than uploading a prepared recording, that requires a separate encoder setup.
What you need to do
YouTube needs a video file for a normal video upload; an AAC audio file by itself will not create a video. Because your video already has pictures, add the separate audio track to it and export the result as a video file. YouTube’s upload troubleshooting guidance recommends editing the audio and video tracks before upload: YouTube Help: Troubleshoot audio or video issues with uploads. Its supported-formats guidance also explains the audio-only restriction: YouTube Help: Supported YouTube file formats.
How to add the AAC track
- Confirm the files and usage rights. Make sure you have the intended silent video and AAC track, and that you have permission to publish the audio. The AAC format does not grant copyright or licensing rights.
- Open both files in video-editing software. Choose an editor that imports the video and AAC file and can export a video file. The official guidance supports using editing software, but does not endorse a particular application or prescribe its interface.
- Put the audio on an audio track and align it. Place it where it should begin relative to the picture. Adjust its start or end, or edit the video, so their durations match. YouTube warns that tracks with different lengths may not sync correctly.
- Preview across the timeline. Check the beginning, middle, and end for misplaced audio, silence, drift, clipping, or abrupt cutoffs. Listen through speakers or headphones; if possible, also check on a phone.
- Export a video file. For a conventional MP4, use the recommended settings below as guidance. Preserve the recording’s frame rate where practical; YouTube recommends uploading at the frame rate used to record the content.
- Play the exported file locally. Confirm that it opens, shows the picture, and plays the intended audio from start to finish before uploading.
- Upload in YouTube Studio. Follow YouTube’s computer upload steps at Upload YouTube videos. YouTube converts uploaded videos for playback at the highest available resolution.
Export settings for a typical MP4
YouTube’s general upload recommendations are not the same as guaranteed requirements: YouTube accepts other supported formats and codecs. For a standard MP4 export, use these recommended settings as a practical target. See YouTube recommended upload encoding settings.
| Setting | Recommended target | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Container | MP4 | A conventional choice, not the only supported upload format. |
| Video codec | H.264 | Use the source frame rate where practical; YouTube recommends uploading at the recording frame rate. |
| Audio codec | AAC-LC | YouTube’s general page also lists Opus and Eclipsa Audio. |
| Audio sample rate | 48 kHz | This is the general upload recommendation. |
| Audio bitrate | 384 kbps for stereo; 512 kbps for 5.1 | These are recommendations on YouTube’s general encoding page, not universal minimums. |
| Audio channels | Stereo, stereo plus 5.1, or stereo plus Eclipsa Audio | Choose a layout your source and export actually support; do not export a multichannel layout from a stereo-only track just to match a listed option. |
YouTube’s troubleshooting page separately lists AAC-LC at 128–256 kbps and 44.1 or 48 kHz among audio settings. Treat these as troubleshooting guidance, not a reason to assume every file must use one fixed bitrate. The general upload recommendations above specify 384 kbps for stereo and 512 kbps for 5.1.

Check synchronization and phone playback
Match the track lengths
Compare the video and audio durations in your editor. If the audio ends early, continues after the picture, or has been stretched, trim or adjust the edit before exporting. Different track lengths can contribute to sync problems, according to YouTube’s upload troubleshooting guidance.
Check mono compatibility
A phone with one speaker may convert stereo sound to mono. YouTube notes that a mix with poor mono compatibility can lose quality or become muted during this conversion. If the audio is weak or absent on a phone but sounds fine on stereo speakers, check the mix for phase or mono-compatibility problems.

Common problems and fixes
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to try |
|---|---|---|
| No sound in the uploaded video | The export may not contain an audio stream, or the export preset may have omitted it. | Play the exported file locally and confirm it has sound before re-uploading. Check the editor’s audio export settings. |
| Audio starts late, drifts, or ends too soon | The audio and video may be misaligned or have different durations. | Correct the timeline alignment and track lengths, export again, and check the beginning, middle, and end. |
| Audio is weak or disappears on a phone | Stereo-to-mono conversion may expose a mono-compatibility or phase issue. | Check the mix in mono and adjust it in the editor; test the new export on a phone. |
| The file plays locally but is not ready for a live broadcast | A prepared video upload and a YouTube Live encoder are different workflows. | Use YouTube’s live encoder setup instructions if you intend to broadcast: Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions. |
Uploading a prepared video is different from YouTube Live
The MP4 and AAC-LC export recommendations above apply to a finished video file uploaded through YouTube Studio. For a live broadcast, configure an encoder using YouTube’s live settings instead; uploading a prepared file does not itself create a live stream. YouTube’s separate instructions are at Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.
If the finished video is intended for a documentary channel that runs prerecorded material as a continuous YouTube stream, StreamNeo is a cloud option: upload the video or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It loops uploaded videos rather than broadcasting a camera, and your computer does not need to stay on. Each slot streams the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. See StreamNeo for details.
