If you mean prerecorded videos added to a YouTube playlist, use YouTube’s upload guidance: an MP4 file with H.264 video and an accepted audio codec such as AAC-LC. If you mean a live stream or its replay, choose settings for the stream’s ingestion protocol instead—typically H.264, HEVC, or AV1 video with AAC or MP3 audio over RTMP/RTMPS.
First, distinguish a playlist from a live stream
A YouTube playlist is a collection of videos; it does not define a special file format or codec. Each uploaded video follows YouTube’s upload recommendations. A live stream is different: an encoder sends a real-time feed to YouTube using a supported ingestion protocol and settings. YouTube then transcodes the live input into playback formats for viewers, so the codec you send is not necessarily the codec every viewer receives. YouTube’s upload recommendations and live encoder guidance cover these separate cases.
For videos uploaded into a YouTube playlist
For the simplest broadly compatible upload, use an MP4 container with H.264 video and AAC-LC audio. YouTube also lists Opus and Eclipsa Audio as accepted audio options. These are upload-file recommendations, not requirements specific to playlists. YouTube’s upload encoding guidance also recommends progressive video, retaining the original frame rate, and placing the MP4 moov atom at the beginning of the file for faster playback startup.
- Container: MP4.
- Video: H.264, progressive, at the original frame rate.
- Audio: AAC-LC is a straightforward choice; Opus and Eclipsa Audio are also listed.
- File layout: Put the MP4
moovatom at the front for fast start.
If your video is already encoded and uploads successfully, there is no need to re-encode it just because you plan to add it to a playlist. These recommendations describe a reliable upload choice; they do not create a playlist-level codec rule.

For a live stream: choose settings for the ingest protocol
For RTMP or RTMPS ingestion, YouTube lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 video, with AAC or MP3 audio. Choose a codec supported by your encoder and workflow; H.264 is the straightforward compatibility-oriented option, while HEVC or AV1 may be appropriate when your encoder supports them and your intended configuration matches YouTube’s current guidance. YouTube recommends RTMPS for encrypted transport. Its live input is transcoded for viewer playback, so select an ingest format rather than trying to dictate one universal playback codec. Check YouTube’s current encoder settings and bitrate table before configuring a stream.
RTMP/RTMPS settings to check
- Rate control: Constant bitrate (CBR).
- Frame rate: Up to 60 fps.
- Keyframes: Two-second interval recommended; do not exceed four seconds.
- Stereo audio: YouTube lists 44.1 kHz and 128 kbps as recommended advanced settings.
- 5.1 audio: YouTube lists 48 kHz and 384 kbps; RTMP/RTMPS 5.1 is supported only with AAC.
Bitrate depends on resolution, frame rate, and codec. For example, YouTube’s currently displayed table lists 10 Mbps at 1080p/30 for AV1 or HEVC and 14 Mbps for H.264. These are the page’s current recommendations, not timeless guarantees; confirm the live table for your exact setup.

HLS is a separate ingest path
If you use HLS ingestion, follow its packaging rules rather than applying RTMP settings by assumption. YouTube requires MPEG-TS segments lasting one to four seconds and a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments. It lists H.264 or HEVC video and AAC, AC3, or EAC3 audio. HLS generally has higher latency than RTMP because it sends the stream in segments. See YouTube’s HLS setup requirements.
HDR streams
YouTube identifies H.265/HEVC as the codec for HDR live streaming. The codec choice alone does not establish a complete HDR configuration; check YouTube’s current HDR-specific requirements before setting color space or other HDR parameters.

Set bitrate against your real upload capacity
Use the bitrate YouTube recommends for your chosen resolution, frame rate, and codec, then make sure your available outbound bandwidth can sustain the total stream bitrate. YouTube advises leaving about 20% headroom rather than using all available upload capacity. Network interruptions can disrupt a live stream, so test the connection and encoder configuration before relying on a scheduled broadcast. See YouTube’s streaming tips.
- Choose the target resolution and frame rate your production needs.
- Choose a video codec supported by both your encoder and the selected ingest protocol.
- Look up the corresponding bitrate recommendation in YouTube’s current settings table.
- Confirm that stable outbound capacity exceeds the stream’s total bitrate, leaving the recommended headroom.
- Run a test stream and check for dropped frames, interruptions, or audio problems before the real broadcast.
For encoder setup context, see YouTube’s guide to creating a live stream with an encoder.

Common format and streaming problems
An uploaded playlist video will not play as expected
Check that the file is a supported upload, and use MP4 with H.264 and AAC-LC as the straightforward recommended combination. For fast startup, verify that the MP4 moov atom is at the beginning. A playlist itself does not resolve an unsupported or poorly prepared upload.
The live stream is unstable
Compare the encoder’s configured bitrate with the available outbound bandwidth. Reduce the stream bitrate or improve the connection if it leaves too little capacity for the recommended headroom, and test again.

The stream is rejected or the stream settings do not match
Verify the ingestion protocol and use settings intended for it. RTMP/RTMPS uses encoder settings such as CBR and a two-second recommended keyframe interval; HLS requires TS segments, one-to-four-second segment duration, and its own rolling-playlist limit.
Viewers receive different playback formats than the input
This is expected: YouTube transcodes live input into multiple playback formats. The encoder’s ingest codec is not a promise that all viewers will receive that same codec.
