To estimate the electricity used by a PC while streaming YouTube, multiply its average power draw at the wall by the hours it runs, then divide by 1,000. The result is kilowatt-hours (kWh), which are also called electricity units in India. To estimate the added energy charge, multiply those units by the applicable marginal rate on your electricity tariff; your final bill may also include slab rates and other charges.
Calculate the PC’s electricity units
Use the PC’s average actual power draw—not the power supply unit’s maximum rated output. The Department of Electricity, Government of Puducherry, explains that one unit (kWh) is 1,000 watts of electrical energy consumed in one hour. Its consumer guide also recommends basing appliance estimates on wattage and actual operating hours. Puducherry consumer guide, “High Electricity Bills: What You Can Do”
Formula: units (kWh) = average watts × hours ÷ 1,000.
For a billing period, use the total hours streamed during that period. If your schedule is consistent, calculate it as average watts × hours per day × days in the billing period ÷ 1,000. Use the actual number of days—often 30 or 31—instead of assuming every billing period is identical.

Step 1: Find average power draw
The most useful input is a wall-power measurement taken while the PC is doing the kind of YouTube streaming you want to estimate. A plug-in energy meter can measure a representative session; check that any device you choose is suitable for your Indian outlet and electrical rating. If you cannot measure it, use a clearly labeled estimate rather than treating a component rating as actual consumption.
Decide whether your estimate covers only the PC or the whole setup. Add a monitor, speakers, router or other equipment only if you want to include them and they are not already captured by your measurement. Avoid double counting devices included in a whole-setup reading.

Step 2: Convert watts and time into units
Multiply the measured or estimated watts by the streaming hours, then divide by 1,000. Because one kWh is one unit, the result is the estimated additional units used by that load.
Step 3: Estimate the energy-charge increase
Multiply the added units by the marginal energy rate that applies to your connection. The applicable rate may depend on your consumption slab and consumer category, so the rate printed on a bill—or the matching current tariff schedule—is more useful than a generic India-wide figure.

Worked example: 200 W for eight hours a day
Illustration only: if a particular PC averages 200 W at the wall and streams for eight hours each day over 30 days, the estimate is 200 × 8 × 30 ÷ 1,000 = 48 units. The energy-charge estimate is 48 multiplied by the household’s applicable marginal rate per kWh. These inputs are hypothetical, not a measured PC result or a standard consumption figure.
No single wattage or monthly bill can be assigned to every streaming PC: actual draw and streaming hours vary, and a national tariff does not apply uniformly to Indian households. If you change the example’s wattage or hours, recalculate rather than scaling the rupee amount from someone else’s bill.

Why the rupee amount depends on your location and bill
India does not have one universal domestic price per electricity unit. The Ministry of Power says retail tariffs are determined by the appropriate electricity regulatory commissions, while state governments may subsidize particular consumer classes. Your state or union territory, DISCOM, connection category, consumption slab and subsidy can therefore affect the rate. Use the latest applicable tariff order or your own bill; the Central Electricity Authority’s March 2026 tariff compilation is a national reference, not a substitute for checking your category and current local order. An energy-charge estimate is not a complete bill prediction. Fixed charges, meter charges, electricity duty or tax, subsidy and other bill items may affect the final amount. For example, WBSEDCL’s appliance estimator states that its approximate cost excludes fixed charges and meter rent; check whether your own DISCOM offers an estimator and what it includes. Time-of-day tariffs may change the marginal rate
A Ministry of Power release published in June 2023 described solar-hour tariffs as 10–20% below normal tariffs and peak-hour tariffs as 10–20% above, with the hours set by state commissions and applicability linked in the release to smart-meter installation. These are policy-framework figures from that release, not a guaranteed current rate or schedule for every household. Check your bill or DISCOM tariff schedule to see whether time-of-day billing applies to your connection and which hours it covers. Ministry of Power, time-of-day tariff release, June 2023
Check the estimate against your meter and bill
Compare the estimated PC units with the difference between successive meter readings or the units shown for comparable billing periods. The household meter records all connected loads, not just the streaming PC, so it will not isolate that device. A bill total can also shift because of tariff or fixed-cost changes even when household usage is similar. The Puducherry consumer guide recommends comparing units across periods as a way to understand consumption.
For a fair comparison between two setups or schedules, hold the billing context constant and compare their measured average wall draw, total streaming hours, included peripherals and applicable tariff slab or time-of-day window. Do not use PSU nameplate wattage as a proxy for observed electricity use.
Or let it run in the cloud
If the goal is to keep a pre-recorded YouTube stream running 24/7, a PC-based estimate is only one part of the cost: the computer and any included equipment must stay powered for the hours you stream. StreamNeo is a cloud service for keeping a YouTube channel live from uploaded videos, so nothing has to stay on at home. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It streams the uploaded file as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream.
