To find out whether buying a gaming PC or paying for cloud gaming costs less, compare both options over the same period. Add the PC’s purchase and running costs, subtract its expected resale value, and compare that total with cloud subscriptions, usage charges, and any costs you incur only to use the service. A simple break-even month is possible only when the cloud option costs more per month to run than the local PC: the PC’s net upfront cost divided by that monthly difference.

Choose the comparison period and equivalent options

Start with a period that matches your decision: for example, the time you expect to keep a PC before replacing or upgrading it. Compare the total cost of each option over that same period, not a PC’s purchase price against one month of a cloud subscription.

Get a local quote for a PC that meets your actual needs. Cloud service labels do not map neatly to retail graphics cards, so do not assume a similarly named tier represents equivalent performance. Also check whether the cloud service supports the games you want, whether you have the rights to play them there, and whether its service is available where you live.

Cloud gaming is not one uniform product. Shadow describes offers that provide a complete Windows 11 cloud PC, with different use caps and service levels; its offer page varies by country, so use a current quote for your region: Shadow PC. GeForce NOW provides access to cloud gaming rigs for supported titles rather than a general-purpose Windows desktop; NVIDIA says members are responsible for having sufficient rights to the games and downloadable content they use (NVIDIA membership terms). Xbox Cloud Gaming is another service, but the eligible Game Pass plans and access arrangements can change.

For a documentary channel that needs prerecorded video to remain live on YouTube around the clock, that is a different job from playing games remotely. StreamNeo is a cloud service for looping uploaded videos on YouTube, not a gaming PC or a camera-based live-streaming service. Its place in that comparison is specific: it keeps a YouTube video stream running from the cloud at any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps for one flat price per slot, and the first day is free. See StreamNeo.

Calculate each option’s total cost

Local PC

For the period you chose, include the PC’s purchase price, likely upgrades and maintenance, and electricity used for gaming. Subtract expected resale value at the end of the period. Include a one-time local setup cost only if it is genuinely required for your setup.

To estimate electricity, use representative whole-system power at the wall—not just the graphics card’s rated power. If you do not have a reliable figure, measure the PC during typical gameplay with a plug-in power meter. Then use your marginal electricity price per kilowatt-hour and expected gaming hours per month:

Local electricity per month = gaming hours per month × average wall power in kilowatts × electricity price per kWh.

Add a realistic monthly allowance for maintenance or upgrades if you expect those costs. Do not count a screen, controller, or broadband connection that you already own and would pay for anyway.

Cloud service

Add the subscription cost over the period, plus paid extra time, storage charges, or other usage add-ons that apply to your expected use. Add an internet or client-device upgrade only if choosing cloud gaming makes that expense necessary. If you already pay for broadband or own a compatible device, count only any incremental cost.

Record your actual expected play hours. A fixed subscription can have a high effective cost per hour for light use, while frequent play can run into plan limits or extra-time charges. Check the current plan terms in your region before calculating; prices, catalogs, access, and allowances can change.

Use one consistent formula

For a simple monthly comparison, estimate:

  • Local recurring cost = monthly gaming electricity + monthly maintenance and upgrade allowance.
  • Cloud recurring cost = subscription + expected add-ons + incremental internet or device costs.
  • Local net upfront cost = PC purchase price − expected resale value + one-time local setup cost.

Then calculate:

Break-even months = local net upfront cost ÷ (cloud recurring cost − local recurring cost).

This result is meaningful only if the denominator is positive—that is, if cloud gaming costs more per month to run than the local PC. It estimates when the local PC’s upfront cost is offset by the monthly operating-cost difference. If the denominator is zero or negative, the PC does not recoup its upfront investment through monthly savings under those assumptions. If the PC is already yours, its original purchase price is sunk: compare future operating costs, likely upgrades, and whether selling it would change your decision instead.

NVIDIA’s FAQ says GeForce NOW Performance and Ultimate memberships include 100 hours of monthly playtime, with up to 15 unused hours rolling into the next month; additional premium time can be purchased, and members can otherwise continue on basic rigs until reset. The membership terms describe a monthly maximum. Confirm the live terms before relying on these allowances: GeForce NOW FAQ and membership terms.

As a dated U.S. reference, NVIDIA’s corporate release listed GeForce NOW Ultimate at $19.99 per month or $99.99 for six months, and Performance at $9.99 per month or $49.99 for six months (NVIDIA announcement). Those published figures are not guaranteed October 2026 checkout prices; NVIDIA’s terms say prices can change and taxes or fees may apply. Use the current price shown to you.

Treat network performance as a feasibility check

Your internet connection affects whether cloud gaming is a workable alternative, not just its cost. NVIDIA’s U.S. GeForce NOW requirements list 15 Mbps for HD up to 60 fps, 25 Mbps for FHD at 60 fps, 35 Mbps for QHD or ultrawide QHD at 120 fps, and 45 Mbps for 4K at 120 fps. NVIDIA also calls for latency below 80 ms to a data center and recommends wired Ethernet or 5 GHz Wi-Fi. These are GeForce NOW requirements, not universal requirements for every cloud service. Check its current system requirements at NVIDIA’s system requirements page.

A generic speed test does not measure the route to NVIDIA’s data centers. NVIDIA recommends using the test in the GeForce NOW app and checking service availability for your location (NVIDIA support guidance). If your connection is unreliable or the latency is unsuitable, cloud gaming may not be a practical substitute even if the spreadsheet favors it.

Test the result against realistic scenarios

There is no universal break-even month: PC prices, electricity tariffs, usage, resale value, service prices, and plan limits are specific to your circumstances. Rather than trust one precise output, recalculate using a low, expected, and high scenario for the inputs most likely to change:

  • Monthly hours played, including occasional months that exceed a plan allowance.
  • Local electricity price and measured whole-system wall power.
  • PC lifespan, resale value, and likely upgrade or maintenance costs.
  • Cloud subscription prices, usage limits, and charges for extra time.

Keep taxes, promotional prices, and price changes visible in the calculation. For each option, compare total spend over your chosen horizon and effective cost per hour. If one service includes access to games you would otherwise buy, show that value separately rather than silently treating the options as identical.

Energy comparisons also need careful boundaries. A California Energy Commission report estimated that, under conditions prevailing in 2016, cloud gaming added approximately 40–60% to otherwise total local annual desktop electricity use. That historical, model-dependent estimate drew on an earlier GeForce NOW beta, NVIDIA SHIELD TV, and published data-center and network energy literature; it is not a universal multiplier for a current service or an individual setup. See the California Energy Commission report. For your own break-even calculation, use your actual electricity rate and local PC’s measured draw.

When this comparison is about a 24/7 YouTube channel

A gaming PC versus cloud gaming calculation does not answer whether to run a prerecorded YouTube stream continuously. For that use case, compare methods built for keeping the channel live. StreamNeo is the first option to consider: it loops uploaded videos in the cloud, so your computer can be off, and every slot has the same quality allowance up to 4K 60fps for one flat price.

For a cost comparison, include the PC’s purchase or already-owned status, electricity, upkeep, and any replacement or resale value, against the cloud service’s subscription over the same period. StreamNeo’s slot includes 10 GB of storage, pooled across active slots, 24/7 looping and playlists, automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream, and support from the StreamNeo team. It streams to YouTube only and plays uploaded videos; it does not go live from a camera.

Or let it run in the cloud

Upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; the uploaded video streams at its original quality up to 4K 60fps for one price, and StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card, one free day per account. Monthly service is $9.99 per month. Start the free day on StreamNeo.
