A local streaming computer can cost less or more than a VPS over a year; the answer depends on the computer’s measured average power draw, your marginal electricity rate, the VPS capacity your workflow needs, and whether its data-transfer allowance covers the continuous stream. Use the formulas and examples below with your own figures rather than treating either option as universally cheaper.
Calculate the annual electricity cost of a local encoder
First estimate how much energy the computer actually uses while encoding or relaying your stream. For a device that runs continuously:
Annual kWh = average watts ÷ 1,000 × 8,760
Annual variable electricity cost = annual kWh × your marginal price per kWh
Use average draw under a representative streaming workload if you can measure it. A computer’s power-supply rating or advertised maximum is not its typical consumption. If a dedicated router or other equipment is required only for the stream, include its measured draw too; otherwise, do not attribute the whole household network’s electricity use to the channel.

Together with Gigabit LAN, Wi‑Fi, and Bluetooth, you get a fast, flexible, and productive connected environment – wired or wireless.
Worked U.S. residential example
A hypothetical device drawing 100 W continuously uses 0.1 kW × 8,760 hours, or 876 kWh a year. At the U.S. Energy Information Administration’s 2025 residential average of 17.30¢/kWh, that works out to about $151.55 in annual variable energy charges. This is an illustration, not a measurement of a typical streaming PC. It excludes fixed bill charges and rate-plan effects. EIA electricity prices and factors affecting prices
Use a rate that matches your location and account
The EIA’s 2025 U.S. commercial average was 13.41¢/kWh. Its all-sector state averages ranged from 8.20¢/kWh in North Dakota to 35.72¢/kWh in Hawaii. These are U.S. statistics, not a substitute for your actual tariff: use the marginal rate on your own bill, and account for time-of-use pricing if the stream’s schedule makes it relevant. Removing one device may reduce variable energy use without reducing fixed customer charges. Readers outside the United States should use their local utility rate and currency.
Estimate the VPS bill—and check what the plan includes
A VPS price is only comparable when the instance can handle the workload and its included transfer covers the outgoing feed. Compare the plan’s CPU and RAM, storage, operating-system options, transfer allowance and counting method, overage charges, backups, public IP, taxes, and any upgrade needed. A machine that only relays already-encoded video has a different workload from one that encodes video; the available evidence does not establish a minimum viable VPS size for either job.

| H.264 example | Approximate transfer per month | Approximate transfer per year |
|---|---|---|
| 480p30 at 5 Mbps | 1.64 TB | 19.71 TB |
| 720p30 at 8 Mbps | 2.63 TB | 31.54 TB |
| 1080p30 at 14 Mbps | 4.60 TB | 55.19 TB |
These are arithmetic estimates from a steady bitrate, not a promise about how a provider counts data. Even the 5 Mbps example exceeds a 1 TB monthly allowance, so inspect the provider’s outbound-transfer policy and overage pricing before comparing its headline monthly fee with electricity. Do not confuse the encoder-to-YouTube ingest connection with delivering the broadcast to viewers: YouTube transcodes live input into viewing formats, and the VPS comparison here is not a separate CDN delivery bill. What’s actually slowing this PC down?

| Cost or constraint | Local encoder | VPS encoder or relay |
|---|---|---|
| Recurring power or compute | Measured average watts × annual hours ÷ 1,000 × local marginal tariff | Monthly plan × 12, plus any capacity upgrades |
| Network transfer | Usually part of the existing internet service; include an incremental charge or cap impact only if applicable | Included transfer, provider counting method, and overage price |
| Capacity | Whether actual CPU/GPU load can sustain the chosen codec, resolution, and frame rate | CPU/RAM capacity; distinguish encoding from relaying an already-encoded feed |
| Reliability and operation | Power, internet, heat, machine availability, and restart automation | Provider/network availability, remote access, monitoring, backups, and restart automation |
| Other incremental costs | New hardware or measurement equipment only if actually needed | Storage, backups, IP, tax, operating system, and optional managed services if charged |
The local example above gives a transparent electricity figure for one hypothetical 100 W device. The Lightsail figure is a published entry-plan price, but a 1 TB allowance does not cover even the illustrative 5 Mbps continuous feed without additional transfer capacity or charges. That is why comparing $151.55 with $60 alone would be misleading: the VPS workload, transfer bill, and any upgrades must be included, and the local machine’s actual draw and tariff may differ.

What a VPS needs to send a YouTube live feed
For a DIY VPS setup, confirm first whether the server will encode your video or relay a file/feed that is already encoded. Choose a VPS only after checking that its CPU and memory suit that workload and that its transfer terms suit the bitrate. YouTube’s current encoder guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS and H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 for supported encoder settings. It recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds; bitrate recommendations depend on codec, resolution, and frame rate. YouTube recommends RTMPS, a secure extension of RTMP. Select settings supported by your source and encoder rather than assuming every listed codec works in every configuration. YouTube encoder settings
- Prepare the VPS workflow. Install and configure the encoder or relay appropriate to your source, then arrange for it to restart after a failure or reboot. Capacity and restart setup depend on the software and workload; the cited pricing information does not establish a suitable instance size.
- Get YouTube’s ingest details. In YouTube’s live-stream setup flow, create or select the stream and obtain its live server URL and stream key. Treat the key as a credential: do not publish it or include it in shared logs.
- Configure and start the feed. Enter the server URL and key in the encoder, set a supported codec, bitrate, resolution, frame rate, and keyframe interval, then start sending content. Confirm that YouTube receives the feed and that the stream is live in YouTube Studio. Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder
- Account for long-running broadcasts. YouTube’s encoder setup guide says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not assume from that statement that a single broadcast can run indefinitely as one archived video; plan for platform operation and stream segmentation, and check current YouTube guidance for longer broadcasts.
When each option makes financial sense
- A local machine may cost less incrementally if it is already available, draws little power under the real workload, and your electricity rate is low. Include reliability and maintenance needs even when they do not appear on the bill.
- A VPS may be preferable for operational reasons if keeping a computer and home connection on is undesirable, but calculate the complete plan and transfer cost, not only the advertised base price. A higher-capacity instance or overage can change the annual comparison.
- Neither option has a universal break-even point. Substitute measured watts, your tariff, the appropriate VPS plan, and the bitrate-based transfer requirement into the comparison. Treat reliability and time spent maintaining the setup as separate trade-offs unless you can assign them a real cost.
