CloudFront live-streaming cost depends mainly on how many viewer-bytes it delivers: audience size × average bitrate per viewer × viewing time, priced by the viewers’ locations and the applicable pricing model. That is only the delivery portion of an AWS live-streaming bill; encoding, packaging or origination, and other services can add separate charges.
What CloudFront does in a live-streaming setup
CloudFront is the content delivery network (CDN) that serves a live video to viewers. In AWS’s documented workflow, MediaLive encodes the live input; MediaPackage can package the output for different formats and optional digital rights management (DRM), while an origin such as MediaStore may suit already-compatible encoded formats. CloudFront then delivers the video. The architecture varies, and MediaPackage is not required for every live stream. See AWS live delivery guidance.
Accordingly, a CloudFront estimate is not an estimate of the complete production stack. AWS’s example breaks out CloudFront distribution separately from the listed encoding and packaging services. Other chosen services or features may add their own costs.
How to estimate CloudFront delivery data
Start with the average bitrate actually delivered to each viewer, not just the source file’s bitrate or the peak rate of the top rendition. For a first-pass estimate:

viewer data (MiB) ≈ viewers × average Mbps per viewer ÷ 8 × viewing seconds
This gives a binary-megabyte-like result under the stated conversion. Convert to the GB or TB units expected by the pricing estimate before applying a rate; do not silently mix decimal GB, binary GiB, Mbps, and MB/s. A viewer on a lower adaptive-bitrate rendition consumes less data than one continuously watching the highest rendition.

- Estimate concurrency. Use viewers watching at the same time over the event, rather than channel subscribers or total registrations.
- Choose an average delivered bitrate. Reflect the encoding ladder and likely rendition mix. For a conservative upper-side case, calculate as if every viewer receives the highest bitrate, but label it as an upper bound.
- Multiply by viewing duration. Longer events and higher concurrency increase the delivered volume proportionally.
- Apply geography-specific pricing. Use the actual or expected viewer distribution and current CloudFront rates; a single rate may not represent a globally distributed audience.
- Estimate other services separately. Add encoding, packaging/origination, and any other selected AWS features to arrive at a broader stack estimate.
AWS’s live-streaming deployment guide provides examples and assumptions at Plan your deployment. Its example assumes every viewer consumes the highest bitrate, a simplifying assumption that AWS says can make the examples higher than actual costs.
AWS example costs—and what they do and do not show
The following are AWS-published reference-solution examples for US East (N. Virginia), accessed in 2026. They are not quotes or universal rates. AWS says prices may change; check the current service pricing and assumptions before budgeting.

| Example event | CloudFront distribution | Listed encoding and packaging | Example total | Estimated distribution volume |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Approximately 1,000 viewers; one-hour SD-540p event | $67.24 | $2.50 | $69.74 | 791 GB |
| Approximately 10,000 viewers; one-hour HD-1080p event | $1,492.56 | $13.04 | $1,505.60 | 18,017 GB |
These figures reflect AWS’s stated standard-pricing assumptions for the examples, not a promise that another event will cost the same. The AWS guide says QVBR and variable video complexity can make output bandwidth 10–50% lower than its estimate in those examples; that is not a guaranteed saving for another stream. Consult AWS’s example calculations for the assumptions behind them.
What makes the bill move
- Viewer volume and watch time: more concurrent viewers and longer sessions mean more delivered data.
- Average bitrate and rendition mix: a higher average delivered bitrate raises bytes per viewer; a top-rendition-only calculation is a useful upper bound, not necessarily the expected case.
- Audience geography: CloudFront rates vary by usage type and geography. Use the distribution of viewers rather than applying a rate from one region to all traffic.
- Cache and delivery configuration: cache behavior, request volume, and whether traffic is on a different plan can affect the estimate or relevant line items.
- Additional services and features: encoding, packaging, origin, Origin Shield, invalidations, real-time logs, CloudFront Functions, and Lambda@Edge can have costs beyond viewer data transfer.

Pay-as-you-go or a flat-rate plan?
AWS publishes both pay-as-you-go pricing and flat-rate CloudFront plans. The public pricing page showed these monthly prices per distribution in its 2026 access-year snapshot; recheck current prices, eligibility, included features, and terms before choosing.
| Plan | Public monthly price in 2026 access-year snapshot | Documented default allowance baseline in 2026 access-year snapshot |
|---|---|---|
| Free | $0 | 1 million requests and 100 GB |
| Pro | $15 | 10 million requests and 50 TB |
| Business | $200 | 125 million requests and 50 TB |
| Premium | $1,000 | 500 million requests and 50 TB; configurable Premium levels are also documented |
AWS describes these allowances as baselines, not absolute hard limits. Its flat-rate documentation says there are no overage charges under those plans, but sustained substantial usage beyond an allowance may result in adjusted delivery. Review the flat-rate plan documentation for terms and plan behavior.
Best Value
- Up max to 1080P@60fps HDMI Video
- H.265, H.264 high/main/baseline profile video code and AAC/MP3 audio code
- RTMP/RTMPS/SRT/RTSP/UDP/HTTP/Multicast/Unicast Protocols
- Support text and image OSD management
Compare models using the same expected monthly delivery profile: data volume, request counts, geography, event peaks versus sustained traffic, included features, eligibility, and any delivery-adjustment terms. Include encoding, origin, and packaging outside a CloudFront plan. Neither model is always cheaper; the result depends on your use and the current terms.
Build a useful estimate before an event
- Make low, expected, and high scenarios. Vary concurrency, duration, audience geography, and average bitrate. Keep a highest-rendition assumption clearly marked as an upper-side case.
- Use AWS’s current pricing tools. Enter the relevant usage and geography in the CloudFront pricing page and AWS Pricing Calculator rather than carrying forward an old example rate.
- Price the workflow components independently. Choose an origin and packaging architecture appropriate to the input formats and required outputs, then estimate encoding, packaging/origination, and delivery separately.
- Budget and revisit assumptions. AWS recommends setting a budget through Cost Explorer. Compare estimates with actual usage as the event profile becomes clearer.
How to investigate a higher-than-expected bill
Use AWS billing and usage records to map line items to usage types rather than treating the total as one undifferentiated CDN fee. AWS’s billing and usage guide explains relevant categories.
- Data transfer out: check bytes served to viewer GET or HEAD requests and compare them with audience, watch time, and bitrate assumptions.
- HTTP/HTTPS requests: inspect request tiers and volumes separately from delivered bytes.
- Other CloudFront line items: check whether Origin Shield, invalidations, real-time logs, CloudFront Functions, or Lambda@Edge were in use.
- Non-CloudFront services: distinguish encoding, packaging/origination, and other stack charges from the distribution line.
A mismatch may come from higher concurrency or watch time, a higher average rendition, geography, request behavior, or additional features. Recalculate with the measured profile and current rates; the example event totals above cannot diagnose a different architecture or bill.
For a simpler YouTube 24/7 stream
If the goal is to keep uploaded recordings looping as a 24/7 YouTube stream—not to build an AWS live-event delivery architecture—StreamNeo is a separate cloud service to consider. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live; StreamNeo loops the uploaded videos from the cloud. It is YouTube-only and does not stream from a camera.
Or let it run in the cloud
Nothing has to stay on at home. StreamNeo streams the uploaded video at its original quality up to 4K 60fps for one flat price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month.
Quick Recap
- Upload your recording or make a playlist.
- Add your YouTube stream key.
