Neither format is inherently better for building watch time. A 24/7 livestream can gather viewing while it is live and, if available afterward as a public replay, potentially later too. A Premiere gives a finished video a scheduled shared launch and then leaves it available to watch. The better choice depends on whether your documentary audience will actually watch ongoing programming or turn up for a release—and whether the resulting hours qualify for the YouTube Partner Program (YPP).
Live streams and Premieres serve different viewing patterns
A 24/7 livestream is a real-time broadcast
YouTube defines live streams as media broadcast in real time. A continuous stream can offer viewers an ongoing channel, with live chat during the broadcast. After it ends, a creator may post a highlight or replay. A long runtime by itself does not create watch time: viewers have to watch.
A Premiere is a scheduled release of a new video
A Premiere lets viewers watch a new video together at a set time. YouTube creates a public watch page in advance, which viewers can share, use to set a reminder, and visit to comment or chat. The scheduled release can appear across YouTube like a regular upload, and the finished video remains available afterward. YouTube Help explains Premieres and live streams.
What counts toward YPP public watch hours
YouTube’s current YPP overview says qualified watch hours come from public long-form videos. It excludes private, unlisted, or deleted videos; ad campaigns; Shorts; and livestreams that are unlisted, deleted, or not converted to video on demand (VOD). So a livestream’s hours should not be treated as eligible merely because the broadcast ran for a long time. If you want an ended stream to remain available as a replay, make sure it is public and converted to VOD.

One long-form eligibility route in YouTube’s current overview, accessed October 3, 2026, is 1,000 subscribers and 4,000 qualified public watch hours in the previous 12 months. YouTube also describes a separate Shorts-based route; it is not a substitute for comparing long-form watch hours. These are eligibility conditions, not evidence that one format performs better. Check the YouTube Partner Program overview for current requirements, which may change.
YouTube says Watch Page monetization covers long-form and live-streaming videos, while watch time from paid ad campaigns does not count toward YPP thresholds. Monetization options do not determine which format earns more qualified hours. For eligible monetized live streams, YouTube lists ads, Super Chat and Super Stickers, and memberships; ad slots are not guaranteed to serve. See YouTube’s live-stream monetization guidance.

Choose the format that fits the documentary
Choose a Premiere for a finished film and a shared launch
A Premiere is a natural fit for a completed documentary, episode, or investigation when a scheduled gathering, advance promotion, reminders, and a shared first viewing matter. The release can continue attracting on-demand viewers after its event. Its scheduled start does not mean it has less watch-time potential; the relevant question is how many people watch and for how long.
Choose a live stream for genuinely ongoing programming
A live stream fits programming that benefits from being available in real time—for example, a curated documentary channel or continuous public-interest footage where viewers have a reason to join at different times. It also requires a plan for operating the broadcast and handling interruptions. Do not choose 24/7 simply on the assumption that more hours on air automatically mean more viewing.

Keep format performance separate from production convenience
YouTube lists mobile, webcam, and encoder methods for live streaming. A channel must be verified and have no live-streaming restriction in the preceding 90 days. Those are live-stream setup conditions; they do not show that equipment or a continuous schedule improves watch time. A Premiere, by contrast, starts with a finished upload rather than a continuing broadcast.
How to compare watch time fairly
- Use eligible hours, not just total runtime. Compare YPP-qualified public watch hours, and check that ended livestreams intended as replays are public and converted to VOD.
- Compare similar periods and content. Avoid comparing a long-running channel stream with a single Premiere over mismatched time windows. Use comparable documentary topics, promotion, and measurement periods where possible.
- Read the audience pattern, not only the total. For a live stream, consider concurrent attendance and return viewing; for a Premiere, consider event attendance and later on-demand viewing. These are different patterns, not interchangeable measures.
- Use your own YouTube Analytics. The official guidance defines formats and eligibility but does not provide a controlled, apples-to-apples study showing that 24/7 streams or Premieres produce more watch time. Your channel’s results are more useful than a universal claim.
