How to Get Clear Sound When Live Streaming

Clear live-stream audio starts with close microphone placement, careful levels, a balanced mix, and a realistic test recording.

For clear live-stream audio, put the microphone close to the speaker, aim it toward the mouth, set levels so speech stays intelligible without clipping, and listen to a test recording before going live. Start with microphone position and the room: software controls cannot remove reverberation or fix a microphone that is too far away.

1. Fix microphone position and the room first

A microphone captures nearby sound as well as your voice. The closer it is to the speaker, the more it favors direct speech over room reflections. Aim it toward the mouth and keep it in a consistent position while speaking. If the voice sounds distant or roomy, move the mic closer before adding processing or turning up gain. Shure notes that a microphone cannot improve the acoustic environment in which it is placed: Shure’s microphone-placement guidance.

  • Move away from reflective surfaces where practical, and reduce nearby reflections if the room sounds echoey.
  • For plosive bursts on sounds such as “p,” aim the microphone slightly above or below the mouth. A pop filter can reduce plosives and provide a repeatable distance reference; it will not remove room echo or general background noise. See Shure’s microphone techniques guide.
  • Choose a mic for its connection compatibility, pickup pattern and placement needs, the noise in your room, and whether you need portability or hands-free positioning. A costlier microphone alone does not guarantee clean audio in a noisy or reverberant space.

2. Check the entire audio signal path

Set and check audio from the source outward: microphone or other source, operating-system input, application level, then OBS mixer controls. Each stage can affect the captured level, so verify the behavior on your own computer rather than assuming one slider controls everything. OBS’s Audio Mixer Guide recommends checking the signal chain and monitoring the mixer meters.

  1. Confirm that the intended microphone is selected in the source device and operating-system input settings.
  2. In OBS, open Settings → Audio and select the microphone you intend to use. Menu names can vary by OBS release and platform.
  3. Speak and confirm that the corresponding OBS mixer meter moves. If it does not, check the source and operating-system input selections before adjusting OBS gain.
  4. Check the output device too, so you can hear the test recording through the headphones or speakers you mean to use.

OBS identifies -20 dBFS as its Alignment Level and -9 dBFS as its Permitted Maximum Level in its meter discussion. These are technical meter references in OBS documentation, not universal loudness targets for every voice, device, or streaming platform. Watch the meter while speaking at your loudest expected level: OBS describes red as close to clipping, and clipping causes distortion. Reduce gain at the earliest source in the chain if the signal is too high.

3. Balance speech against the rest of the stream

For a documentary discussion, interview, narration, or live commentary, viewers need to understand speech over other audio. OBS advises keeping speech generally above gameplay or other content in the meter, with music and effects lower. But meter readings alone do not establish how loud sources sound to viewers; sources with similar meter levels can be perceived differently.

  • Set speech and other sources while listening to them together, not only by comparing meters.
  • If music, a call, an alert, or other content masks the voice, lower that source or adjust the balance until the words are intelligible.
  • Avoid raising microphone gain to compensate for a weak or distant voice before checking placement and the earlier stages of the signal path.

There is no single platform-wide loudness target established here for every streamer. Use the meters to spot absent or excessive signal, then judge the delivered mix by listening.

4. Record a realistic test and listen back

A moving meter confirms that signal is reaching OBS; it does not tell you whether the complete mix sounds clear to someone watching. Before the broadcast, record a short sample with the normal combination of speech, calls, music, gameplay, and alerts. Listen through the output path viewers are likely to use, then correct any problems and record another sample if needed. OBS’s Quick Start Guide covers making a test recording before streaming.

5. Troubleshoot the symptom you hear

Symptom Likely cause What to do
No voice in OBS The wrong microphone is selected, or the source device is not delivering input. Check Settings → Audio and watch the mixer meter while speaking. If it does not move, verify the source device and operating-system input selection.
Roomy or distant voice The microphone is too far away, pointed away from the speaker, or picking up strong room reflections. Move it closer, point it toward the mouth, and reduce nearby reflections where practical. A microphone cannot remove the room’s reverberation by itself.
Distorted voice The signal is too high and clipping. Reduce gain at the earliest source in the chain and check the meters while speaking at the loudest expected level.
Voice buried by music or other audio Other sources compete with speech, or the levels sound different from what the meters suggest. Adjust source volumes, then listen to a recording of the combined mix and make speech intelligible.
Sharp pops on “p” sounds Air from plosive consonants is hitting the microphone. Aim the microphone slightly above or below the mouth; consider an external pop filter.
Audio seems fine in the mixer but wrong in the stream The test did not include the normal mix or was not monitored through a representative output path. Record the usual combination of sources and listen through the same kind of output path viewers are likely to use before going live.
