You can use FFmpeg’s concat demuxer to play compatible lofi tracks in sequence and send the resulting program to YouTube Live. But a playlist alone does not make a 24/7 broadcast: your files must meet FFmpeg’s compatibility requirements, the stream needs valid YouTube ingest settings, the playlist must be tested to repeat, and you must have livestream rights for every track. This guide covers the setup and its limits; no single command here is presented as a tested, universal 24/7 solution.
What the FFmpeg concat demuxer does—and what it does not
The concat demuxer reads a text file of media paths and presents the listed files sequentially as one input. When the files are compatible, this can avoid re-encoding. It does not automatically make different codecs, stream layouts, or time bases compatible, and the demuxer documentation describes sequential playback rather than establishing a universal directive to repeat the whole playlist indefinitely. See the FFmpeg Formats Documentation and FFmpeg’s concat FAQ.
For a typical lofi stream with one visual loop and a sequence of audio tracks, plan the audio playlist and video input as separate parts of the FFmpeg workflow. A concat list of audio files does not by itself define how an independent still image or video loop should run alongside them.
Check and prepare your tracks first
Confirm that the files are compatible
For concat-demuxer inputs, FFmpeg requires matching streams, codecs, and time bases. A collection of tracks in mixed formats may fail, behave unexpectedly, or need conversion before it can be concatenated. Inspect the files and normalize incompatible assets to a consistent audio format, channel layout, and sample rate. If the sources cannot be made suitable for packet-level concatenation, use a workflow that decodes and re-encodes them instead; FFmpeg’s FAQ distinguishes the concat demuxer from the concat filter for that use case.

Do not assume that similarly named files or a playlist order guarantee matching durations or timestamps. The demuxer uses file durations to determine where subsequent timestamps begin. Incorrect duration information can cause artifacts, and differing stream lengths can create gaps. Normalize assets where appropriate, and use a duration directive only when you know the accurate duration for that file.
Keep the visual schedule separate
If your stream uses a still image or a looping visual, configure that input separately from the audio concat playlist. Verify that the final output stays synchronized and that the visual continues for the full program. The concat demuxer’s file list joins compatible media inputs sequentially; it does not automatically coordinate an independent audio playlist with a separate visual loop.

Write the concat playlist
Create a plain-text playlist, for example lofi.ffconcat, with paths relative to the playlist file:
ffconcat version 1.0
file 'track-001.wav'
file 'track-002.wav'
file 'track-003.wav'
When relying on automatic format recognition, put ffconcat version 1.0 on the first line exactly, with no leading spaces or byte-order mark. Each file line identifies one media file. Quote or escape spaces and special characters in paths according to FFmpeg’s concat syntax.

Safe-path checking is enabled by default. It rejects paths that are not considered relative and portable, so an absolute-path playlist may need to be moved or used with a deliberate safe-path setting. Do not relax path safety for an untrusted playlist. The syntax and path rules are documented in the FFmpeg Formats Documentation.
Configure YouTube Live ingest and test before launch
Use YouTube’s current encoder guidance when configuring FFmpeg’s output. YouTube recommends RTMPS ingest and constant bitrate (CBR) video; it accepts AAC or MP3 audio, recommends a two-second keyframe interval, and says the interval must not exceed four seconds. For stereo audio, its recommendation is 128 kbps. These are platform recommendations, not a complete FFmpeg command or a guarantee of a stable, uninterrupted broadcast. Check YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrate, and resolution guidance for the current details.

- Audio: AAC or MP3 is accepted; YouTube recommends 128 kbps for stereo.
- Video mode: choose a supported resolution and frame rate that suit the visual, the encoder capacity, and your upload connection.
YouTube transcodes live streams into other viewer formats. Before a public launch, test with representative audio and video, check the available upload bitrate with a speed test, and watch YouTube’s stream-health indicators and warnings during the event. These checks help identify problems; they do not promise that a long-running stream will never disconnect.

The concat demuxer reads the listed files sequentially, but the documentation cited here does not establish a universal instruction that repeats an entire playlist forever. Avoid assuming that one loop option works in every position or behaves the same way across FFmpeg builds. Check the installed FFmpeg version’s option semantics, then test that playback reaches the end, returns to the first track, and does so without a gap or timestamp problem.

A 24/7 broadcast also needs a plan for the FFmpeg process and network interruptions. The official guidance cited here does not prescribe one supervisor or promise continuous uptime. Choose a supervision and restart approach appropriate to the machine or hosting environment, and test what happens when the encoder exits or the connection drops. Confirm that YouTube receives the resumed output as intended rather than treating playlist looping and process recovery as the same problem.
Clear music rights before the stream goes live
Only use music whose rights cover the intended YouTube livestream and any archive or replay. YouTube scans live streams for third-party content; a match may produce a warning or placeholder, and continued use can lead to temporary interruption or termination. Licensing alone may not prevent an interruption: YouTube says a rights owner may need to add your channel to its Content ID allowlist. Its guidance states, “If your channel isn’t added to their allowlist, your live stream can be interrupted even if you’ve licensed the content.” Read YouTube Help’s guidance on copyright issues with live streams, ask the rights owner about allowlisting before launch, and keep written records of the license scope and permissions.
Check that permission covers continuous live use, the territory and platform where you will broadcast, and any saved replay. Do not assume that a track described as royalty-free or licensed for other uses is cleared for a 24/7 YouTube stream.
Troubleshoot common setup failures
- FFmpeg rejects a track or playback breaks at a file boundary: compare the inputs’ streams, codecs, and time bases. Normalize incompatible files or use a filter-based workflow that re-encodes when needed.
- A click, gap, or timestamp jump appears between tracks: verify each file’s duration and stream lengths. Incorrect duration data affects where subsequent timestamps begin; normalize the media or provide a duration only when its value is known accurately.
- The playlist file is not recognized: check that the optional signature is exactly
ffconcat version 1.0on line one, with no preceding spaces or byte-order mark, and that the file entries use valid quoting or escaping. - FFmpeg cannot open a listed path: check the working directory and whether the path is relative and portable. Safe-path checking defaults to enabled; do not disable it for an untrusted playlist.
- The stream does not restart at the first track: test repetition behavior with the installed FFmpeg build. The concat list’s sequential reading is not, by itself, proof of an infinite loop.
- YouTube reports poor stream health or the feed disconnects: check upload capacity, encoder settings, and the connection; monitor YouTube’s stream-health warnings and test representative content. Decide separately how the process and network interruption will be supervised and recovered.
- The live stream is interrupted despite having a license: review YouTube’s copyright guidance and contact the rights owner about Content ID allowlisting for your channel.
