Generate a countdown as a video clip, place it between the playlist videos, and send the ordered sequence through the same FFmpeg output to YouTube Live. Use FFmpeg’s concat demuxer when every file has compatible streams, codecs, and time bases; use the concat filter when clips need to be normalized and re-encoded.
Choose the countdown’s duration and format
Decide how long the slate should last—30 or 60 seconds are examples—then choose its resolution, frame rate, background, and audio. Matching the playlist videos’ dimensions and frame rate makes transitions easier to manage. Decide whether the slate should be silent, carry its own music, or include continuous background audio.
For a concat-demuxer playlist, plan for the slate and videos to have matching stream layouts, codecs, and time bases. If the videos have audio, giving the slate an audio stream as well can prevent the stream layout from changing between entries.
Generate a countdown clip with FFmpeg
FFmpeg’s color and drawtext filters can create a background and overlay text. The drawtext filter supports text expressions based on elapsed clip time, which can be used to display a changing countdown. Where needed, specify an available font file explicitly with fontfile.

Render the slate to a file with a fixed duration and compatible video and audio streams. A fixed-duration file is straightforward to insert into a static playlist. If the clips use different parameters, prepare to normalize and re-encode them through the concat filter instead of relying on the concat demuxer.
Choose the right FFmpeg concatenation method

For the demuxer route, create a text file listing entries in playback order. Use correctly escaped paths. The optional ffconcat version 1.0 signature must be exact and appear on the first line for automatic recognition.

Send the playlist to YouTube Live
- In YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, create or schedule a stream and copy the current server URL and stream key.
- Configure FFmpeg’s output with the ingest URL and stream key. The following is an implementation template, not a tested command; confirm that your local FFmpeg build supports the options and use encoding settings suitable for your system and YouTube’s current recommendations.

- Start FFmpeg. For a scheduled broadcast, wait for the encoder preview to appear in Live Control Room, then select Go live. YouTube distinguishes the incoming audio-video stream from the watchable broadcast; the slate changes the encoder’s feed content, but does not create or schedule another broadcast. One stream can be reused for broadcasts scheduled at different times, as described in Google’s broadcasts-and-streams documentation.
Check timing, transitions, and audio before relying on the playlist
Run the sequence to a local output or a private or unlisted scheduled stream before using it for a public broadcast. Check total duration, countdown timing, transitions, and audio continuity. This is particularly important with the concat demuxer: it uses each file’s duration to adjust timestamps, so inaccurate duration metadata can cause timing artifacts.
- Confirm the slate begins after the intended video and lasts for the intended interval.
- Listen across both transitions to catch silence, abrupt changes, or missing audio caused by inconsistent stream layouts.
- Check that the video and audio remain continuous through the end of a full playlist pass.
Understand the YouTube broadcast and archive behavior
Adding a slate to the encoder’s outgoing sequence changes what viewers receive within that broadcast; it does not itself create a separate YouTube event. YouTube Help says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That is a platform condition, not an FFmpeg playlist-duration limit, and YouTube may change it; see YouTube’s encoder live-streaming guidance.

Troubleshoot common problems
The concat demuxer rejects the playlist or transitions fail
Check that all entries expose the same streams, codecs, and time bases. A slate without audio paired with videos that have audio can change the stream layout. Add compatible audio to the slate or normalize and re-encode the inputs using the concat filter.
Timing artifacts appear at a cut
Inspect file durations and metadata. Because the demuxer adjusts timestamps using durations, incorrect duration information can lead to artifacts. Correct the duration metadata or use an explicit duration directive where appropriate; if inputs otherwise need normalization, use the concat filter.

The countdown text does not render
Check that the drawtext filter can access the chosen font. Supply an available font file explicitly with fontfile, and verify that the text expression produces the intended changing value over the slate’s fixed duration.
YouTube does not show an encoder preview
Verify that FFmpeg is sending to the current server URL and stream key copied from Live Control Room, and check that the encoder is still running. For a scheduled broadcast, wait for the preview before selecting Go live. Keep the stream key private while checking logs or scripts.
Audio drops out on the slate
Compare the slate’s audio stream with the playlist entries. If continuous sound is required, give the slate compatible audio rather than allowing a change in stream layout or an unintended silent interval.
