How to Simulcast to YouTube and Other Platforms

Send one live production to YouTube and other platforms by choosing a local multi-output or cloud workflow, using destination-specific settings, and testing every feed before going live.

To simulcast, send the same live production to YouTube and at least one other platform, either by configuring multiple outputs in your local streaming setup or by sending one feed to a cloud distribution service. Create a live event on each destination, use its current ingest details, check each platform’s separate encoder requirements, and test every output before the public broadcast.

Choose how to distribute your live feed

Simulcasting means delivering a live production to multiple destinations at once. The two basic workflows are local multi-output streaming and cloud distribution. In either case, confirm that the chosen workflow supports every destination and lets you meet its current technical and account requirements.

Send separate outputs from your local setup

Your encoder or streaming setup sends an output to each platform. This gives you direct control over the destinations, but multiple outputs may increase demand on your computer or streaming hardware and your outgoing connection. The actual load depends on your setup; test it with the intended resolution, frame rate, and number of destinations rather than assuming a universal bandwidth multiplier.

Send one feed to a cloud distributor

A cloud service can receive one feed and distribute it to multiple platforms. This can reduce the number of outgoing feeds your local setup sends, but check the provider’s current destination support, output controls, pricing, failure handling, credential security, and terms. A relay adds a service hop; comparative latency figures are not established here, so test latency for your own production before relying on it.

Use hardware encoding when it fits the production

Hardware live-streaming encoders are another way to send a production to online platforms. Blackmagic Design’s manual, for example, describes a streaming encoder workflow for YouTube, Facebook, Twitch, and other platforms: Blackmagic Design ATEM Television Studio HD manual. That establishes hardware encoding as a product category, not that every model supports your destinations or separate settings for each. Confirm the exact model’s capabilities before buying.

Set up each destination before configuring the encoder

  1. Create or schedule the event. In each platform’s live-streaming interface, create or schedule the broadcast so its current connection details are available.
  2. Get the ingest address and credential. Copy the platform’s current ingest URL and stream key, or its equivalent credential, into the corresponding destination settings in your encoder or distribution service. Treat stream keys as passwords: do not publish or share them. If one is exposed, replace or reset it through the platform’s live-streaming controls.
  3. Choose the distribution path. Decide whether your local setup will send separate outputs or one feed will go to a cloud distributor. Verify that the selected path supports every destination and the settings you need.
  4. Check destination-specific requirements. Read each platform’s current guidance for supported ingest protocols, codecs, bitrate, frame rate, keyframes, and account eligibility. A setting accepted by YouTube is not proof that another platform will accept it.

Configure the YouTube output

Use the ingest details shown in YouTube’s Live Control Room. YouTube recommends RTMPS, a secure extension of RTMP, for encoder connections; its documentation says the connection is encrypted through to Google’s servers. See YouTube Live Streaming API: Getting started and YouTube Help: Live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.

  • 【HDMI LOOP-OUT】Based on the high-speed USB 3.0 technology, it can capture one single channel HD HDMI video signal. There is no delay when you are playing game live.
  • 【Support Mic-in for Commentary】Rybozen capture card has microphone input and you can use it to add external commentary when playing a game. Please note: it only accepts 3.5mm TRS standard microphone headset.
  • Protocol: Prefer RTMPS when your encoder supports it, following the ingest details provided for the event.
  • Bitrate mode: YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR). Set the bitrate and other encoder values according to YouTube’s current guidance for your chosen output format.
  • Keyframe interval: YouTube recommends a two-second interval and says not to exceed four seconds.
  • Codec and resolution: Use a codec and output format supported by YouTube, and check its live encoder guidance for the current recommendations. Do not infer other platforms’ requirements from YouTube’s table.

YouTube automatically transcodes a live stream into formats for viewers using different devices and networks. That does not remove the need for your encoder to deliver a stable, correctly configured feed to YouTube.

Match settings across platforms without assuming they are identical

For every non-YouTube destination, consult that platform’s current official setup guidance and configure the corresponding output. Platforms may differ in accepted ingest methods, codecs, bitrate limits, frame rates, keyframe intervals, and account rules. If your workflow cannot provide different settings where destinations require them, choose a compatible shared configuration only after checking each destination’s requirements.

OBS documents a simulcast workflow using WHIP that can send multiple video quality levels. This describes the WHIP workflow in OBS’s guide; it is not a general method for sending one stream to any combination of conventional RTMP destinations. See OBS WHIP streaming guide.

Test the complete simulcast before going public

  1. Use a suitable test event. Configure a private, unlisted, or otherwise appropriate test on every destination before a public broadcast.
  2. Send representative content. Test with audio and motion similar to the actual program. A static screen will not reveal every issue that appears during a documentary, interview, or other motion-heavy segment.
  3. Check every destination independently. Confirm that each platform receives the intended feed and that picture, audio, and synchronization are acceptable.
  4. Review encoder and platform health indicators. Watch for dropped frames, warnings, and stream-health messages. YouTube specifically advises monitoring stream health and reviewing messages during the event.
  5. Verify controls and recovery. Confirm that you know how to stop or adjust an individual destination without unintentionally interrupting the others, and understand what happens if an output or relay fails.

Troubleshoot common simulcast problems

Symptom What to check Practical response
One destination never starts That destination’s event, ingest address, stream key, supported protocol, and account eligibility. Recheck the current event details and credential, then confirm the encoder or service is using the destination’s accepted connection method.
YouTube reports poor stream health Encoder warnings, outgoing connection stability, the selected codec and bitrate, and whether CBR and the recommended keyframe interval are configured. Review YouTube’s current encoder guidance and stream-health messages; retest with representative motion and audio before returning to the public event.
Only one platform has a clean picture Whether the other destination accepts the same codec, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, and keyframe interval. Use separate outputs or a distributor with the necessary per-platform controls if the destinations require different settings.
Audio is missing or out of sync The audio source, encoder audio configuration, and synchronization at each destination. Test each output independently with the same representative audio and correct the source or destination-specific configuration before the main broadcast.
Local system struggles when more destinations are added Encoder load and connection stability under the actual multi-output configuration. Reduce unnecessary output demand, test a suitable cloud distribution workflow, or use capable hardware after verifying its destination support.

Keep platform rules and program rights in view

Technical compatibility does not establish permission to broadcast the program. Before simulcasting, confirm that you have the rights to the documentary footage, music, photographs, and other material in the production, and check each platform’s current content and live-streaming rules. Account eligibility and destination policies can differ; consult the relevant platform rather than assuming YouTube’s requirements apply elsewhere.
