You can play an ordered set of local video files to YouTube Live from a headless Linux PC by using FFmpeg’s concat demuxer for the playlist and an encoder configured for YouTube’s 2160p60 ingest settings. The PC must sustain the chosen encode and upload bitrate, and the source files must support the resolution and frame rate you intend to deliver. Build and test the complete pipeline before leaving it unattended; no generic command can guarantee compatibility with an unspecified Linux host, FFmpeg build, and media collection.
This guide treats “playlist” as local files you own or are authorized to stream. Rebroadcasting an existing YouTube playlist is a different workflow; the steps here do not establish permission to retransmit those videos.
What you need before you start
- A headless Linux PC with the video files stored locally and enough compute capacity to encode the chosen codec at 2160p60. The required CPU or GPU capacity depends on the encoder, build, and source material; verify it with a test.
- An installed FFmpeg build that includes the required input, protocol, and encoder support. Available encoders vary by build and hardware.
- A YouTube channel with live streaming enabled and access to YouTube Live Control Room.
- A stable wired network connection with measured outbound upload capacity sufficient for the video and audio bitrate plus headroom.
- Files you own or have authorization to stream. Copyright permission and YouTube policy compliance depend on the content and circumstances.
Check each file’s resolution, frame rate, codec, audio streams, and duration before constructing the playlist. Upscaling a smaller image or duplicating frames does not create original 4K detail or 60-fps motion.
Choose the ingest format and bitrate
YouTube’s published encoder guidance, accessed 2026-10-03, supports RTMP/RTMPS and lists H.264, HEVC, and AV1, with frame rates up to 60 fps. YouTube recommends RTMPS for encryption, CBR encoding, and a two-second keyframe interval; the interval should not exceed four seconds. For a 4K stream, YouTube sets latency to normal rather than offering its low-latency optimization option. YouTube’s encoder settings and bitrate guidance may change, so check it when configuring your stream.

| Video codec at 2160p60 | YouTube-published recommended bitrate | YouTube-published minimum bitrate | Considerations |
|---|---|---|---|
| AV1 or H.265 (HEVC) | 35 Mbps | 10 Mbps | Confirm that your chosen encoder and YouTube ingest path support the codec, and that the PC can encode it in real time. |
| H.264 | 50 Mbps | 14 Mbps | Use the higher recommended target only if your upload connection and encoder can sustain it reliably. |
These are YouTube’s published settings, not guarantees of quality or of successful encoding on your particular machine. YouTube advises choosing a quality your connection can reliably support and testing upload capacity. Leave 20% headroom above the total stream bitrate; if you send a backup stream, include its bitrate in the total before applying that headroom. YouTube’s streaming tips explain the network guidance.
For RTMP/RTMPS, YouTube lists AAC or MP3 audio, 44.1 kHz stereo audio, and 128 Kbps stereo audio. For SDR, its guidance recommends Rec. 709 and 8-bit depth. For AV1 at 3840×2160 or higher, YouTube specifies at least two tile columns. HDR is a separate configuration path: YouTube specifies HEVC and HLS guidance for HDR, and HLS uses short transport-stream segments and a rolling playlist; it has higher latency than RTMP. Do not treat the SDR/RTMPS settings in this guide as an HDR setup. See YouTube’s encoder settings and YouTube’s HDR live-streaming guidance.

Build the local playlist
Prepare an ordered concat list
FFmpeg’s concat demuxer reads a text file of media entries and demuxes the files in sequence. Create a plain-text file, for example playlist.txt, with one entry per file in the order you want them played:
file '/absolute/path/to/video-01.mp4'
file '/absolute/path/to/video-02.mp4'
file '/absolute/path/to/video-03.mp4'
Use paths that the account running FFmpeg can read. If filenames contain apostrophes or other special characters, follow FFmpeg’s concat-list quoting and escaping rules rather than copying the example literally. Keep file parameters compatible where possible. FFmpeg warns that timestamp adjustment can create gaps when streams have different lengths; incompatible codecs, layouts, or audio streams may also require a normalized or transcoded workflow. Consult the FFmpeg concat demuxer documentation for syntax and limitations.

Decide what happens at the end
Choose whether the stream should stop after the last file or repeat continuously. FFmpeg documents -stream_loop -1 as infinite input looping and -re as reading input at its native frame rate. Those options can inform an implementation, but validate how looping behaves with your concat input, FFmpeg build, and file set. Do not assume that an option tested on one input arrangement will loop an entire playlist as intended.
Configure YouTube Live Control Room
- Open YouTube Live Control Room and create or schedule the live stream using the visibility and start time appropriate for your test.
- Copy the stream’s RTMPS server URL and stream key from the stream settings. Enter them into your encoder configuration; do not publish the key, put it in a public script repository, or include it in logs that others can access.
- Set the output to 3840×2160 at 60 fps, select a codec supported by your encoder and YouTube, and configure CBR with a two-second keyframe interval. Use the codec-specific bitrate target from the table, adjusted only after testing your upload and encoder capacity.
- Configure audio for the file set and YouTube’s RTMP/RTMPS guidance. Check that the stream actually has an audio track and that the resulting output is audible and synchronized.
- Save the configuration securely and keep the stream key private. If it is exposed, reset it in Live Control Room and update the encoder. YouTube describes stream-key handling in its stream setup guidance.
The exact FFmpeg output command depends on your installed build, source formats, audio layout, available encoder, loop requirement, RTMPS URL, and key. No single untested command is safe to present as guaranteed to work across those variables. Confirm the encoder’s local options and capabilities, then map them to YouTube’s settings above. YouTube also lists OBS as open-source software available at no charge, but a particular GUI-free OBS deployment on headless Linux is not established here. See YouTube’s encoder setup options.

Test the full stream before leaving it unattended
- Measure outbound upload capacity during conditions resembling the intended broadcast. YouTube recommends a speed test for upload bitrate and 20% headroom above the combined stream bitrate.
- Start a private or unlisted test stream and inspect the Live Control Room preview and stream health. Check that the reported resolution and frame rate match the intended output.
- Watch viewer playback through representative segments, including transitions between files. Verify picture, audio, synchronization, and whether any gaps or freezes occur.
- Test the intended end-of-playlist behavior: stop, repeat, or whatever your configured workflow is meant to do.
- Test what happens if the network drops and if the FFmpeg process or host restarts. YouTube recommends testing and monitoring the setup; recovery behavior depends on your local supervisor, encoder, and network configuration.
- Only switch to the intended audience visibility after the end-to-end test works reliably. YouTube recommends previewing and testing the stream before going live. See YouTube’s streaming tips.
Headless operation and common failures
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Stream health reports instability or viewers see buffering | Upload capacity is too low or variable for the configured total bitrate, or the connection has competing traffic. | Measure outbound upload during the run, include any backup stream in the bitrate total, preserve 20% headroom, and test at a lower supported target if needed. |
| Output is not actually 2160p60 | Source media is lower resolution or frame rate, or the encoder output configuration is wrong. | Inspect source properties and encoder output, then verify the reported output in Live Control Room and viewer playback. Scaling or frame duplication cannot add source detail or motion information. |
| Black frames, silence, or gaps at file changes | Files have differing stream lengths, unsupported or mismatched parameters, or missing audio/video streams. | Test each file, review concat behavior and timestamps, and normalize or transcode files as needed. FFmpeg documents potential gaps from timestamp adjustment when stream lengths differ. |
| FFmpeg exits or the stream does not reconnect | A process, host, network, or ingest interruption has no configured supervisor or restart behavior. | Review process output and host/network logs, test restart and reconnect behavior, and use an appropriate local supervisor if unattended recovery is required. Recovery is not automatic merely because FFmpeg is running. |
| YouTube cannot receive the stream | Wrong server URL or key, invalid key, unsupported encoder/protocol configuration, or stream setup issue. | Re-copy the RTMPS URL and key from the correct Live Control Room stream, check encoder support and settings, and reset an exposed key. |
Costs and hardware trade-offs
The local FFmpeg workflow avoids a dedicated cloud playout service, but it still depends on a PC that can sustain the encode and an internet connection that can sustain the upload. A hardware encoder is optional, not a universal requirement: YouTube lists NVIDIA GPUs among hardware encoder options, but that does not establish compatibility for a specific card, Linux driver, codec, or workload. Check the exact card and encoder support before buying hardware. YouTube’s encoder settings page lists its encoder options.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is a continuously looping YouTube channel rather than maintaining the Linux host, StreamNeo is an alternative: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops uploaded videos from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home; it does not stream from a camera or to platforms other than YouTube. Each slot streams the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, with no re-encode or quality tiers, and it can automatically recover if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month.
