Fix YouTube Live Stream Error 400 When Starting an OBS Broadcast

OBS error 400 does not identify one confirmed YouTube cause. Start by checking where it appears, refreshing the current stream key, and verifying the OBS connection.

If OBS fails when you click Start Streaming to broadcast to YouTube, first identify where the error appears, then refresh the YouTube stream key and update OBS. YouTube recommends getting a new stream key and updating the encoder for third-party encoder startup errors. Its guidance does not specifically define an OBS/YouTube error numbered 400, so the number alone is not enough to prove the key is the cause.

First, identify which connection is failing

Note the full error wording and when it appears. A bare “400” does not establish whether OBS could not authenticate, could not connect to YouTube, or sent a feed that YouTube later flagged. YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance covers third-party encoder startup errors generally, but does not assign a specific cause to OBS error 400.

  • During OBS sign-in: If you connected OBS to YouTube by logging into your account rather than entering a stream key, the failure may be in that account integration.
  • When OBS starts sending: If OBS uses a stream key, follow the key-refresh steps below and verify the connection details.
  • After YouTube shows a preview or health message: Use the Live Control Room’s specific stream-health message to investigate the feed, format, or bitrate.

Do not treat unrelated reports of “Error 400” as proof of a YouTube broadcast problem. For example, an OBS forum report surfaced during research concerns Restream authentication, not a YouTube broadcast-start failure.

Refresh the YouTube stream key in OBS

  1. Open YouTube Studio’s live control room and select the Stream tab.
  2. Copy the stream key currently shown for the intended stream.
  3. In OBS, open Settings and select Stream. Confirm the service is YouTube and paste the current key into the stream-key field. The exact labels can vary by OBS version and connection method.
  4. Save the settings, then try Start Streaming again. Check the Live Control Room preview when it appears.

If you reset the key, replace the old value in OBS with the newly generated one. Only a channel owner or manager can reset a stream key. YouTube’s documented first remedy for third-party encoder startup errors is to get a new key in Live Control Room and update the encoder (YouTube live-stream troubleshooting; manage live-stream settings).

Check the service, server, and event details

Verify that OBS is configured for the intended YouTube destination and that the key belongs to the stream or event you are trying to start. YouTube’s encoder setup uses a server URL and stream key; after starting the encoder, check the Live Control Room preview where appropriate. If you use a custom server URL, compare it with the details shown in the YouTube workflow you selected rather than substituting a value from another event. See YouTube’s encoder setup instructions.

Check OBS and the signal leaving your computer

Use this branch if refreshing the key and confirming the destination do not resolve the startup failure:

When using an adapter, if the device is recognized as USB 2.0, try using the other side with the USB-C port. Simply flip the capture card and reconnect it to be recognized as USB 3.0
  1. Update OBS. YouTube recommends using the latest encoder version. Apply the update appropriate for your system, then reopen OBS and retry.
  2. Inspect OBS’s local output. Confirm the intended video and audio sources are active. Look for encoder errors or unusually high CPU load. If you have a local recording, review it to see whether the same audio or video fault is present there.
  3. If local audio or video is faulty, correct the source, encoder, or system-load issue before troubleshooting the YouTube connection further.
  4. If the local output looks healthy, test the outbound internet connection. A good local recording does not by itself confirm that the live feed can reach YouTube.

YouTube covers these checks in its live-stream troubleshooting guidance.

Use YouTube’s stream-health message to diagnose feed problems

Once OBS is sending a feed, open the Live Control Room and read the actual stream-health message. YouTube distinguishes critical red errors from moderate yellow errors; its documented messages include format and bitrate problems. Follow the message shown for your stream instead of assuming that every startup failure has the same cause. See YouTube’s live-stream error messages.

Check encoder settings and test before an event

YouTube’s encoder guidance lists RTMP or RTMPS, H.264, and CBR among its recommended settings. The appropriate values depend on the chosen YouTube workflow and OBS version; use YouTube’s current encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions guidance rather than guessing a bitrate or changing several settings at once. Test the complete path before the scheduled broadcast and monitor stream health during the test.

YouTube also recommends testing before going live. Cameras, microphones, and other production equipment are optional choices for stream production, not fixes for this startup error; YouTube notes that expensive equipment is not required to begin (YouTube live-streaming tips).

If OBS signs in to YouTube without a stream key

If your OBS connection relies on account sign-in instead of a stream key, refreshing a key will not address that authentication path. YouTube says the streaming-software provider may need to update its integration. Contact OBS support with the full error wording and the point at which it appears. YouTube’s guidance does not establish that every account-login error numbered 400 has the same cause.

Or let it run in the cloud

If the goal is a continuous YouTube stream of uploaded videos rather than a live camera feed, StreamNeo is an alternative: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. The cloud keeps the loop running without a computer or home connection left on. StreamNeo plays uploaded videos; it does not broadcast a camera.
