There is no documented rule that makes OBS or YouTube cut the opening seconds simply because a live stream is 4K at 60 fps. First identify where the loss occurs: in an OBS Media Source playlist, in YouTube’s preview, or in the public live stream or replay. Those are different playback paths, and the title alone does not reveal which one is involved.
First, identify where the opening seconds disappear
Watch the same moment at each stage, if possible, and note the exact timecode or duration missing.
- Only an OBS Media Source playlist skips: The issue is in OBS source playback or playlist behavior, not necessarily the YouTube encoder. The available live-encoder guidance does not establish how a particular Media Source is configured or explain this symptom.
- The OBS preview begins correctly, but YouTube’s Live Control Room preview does not: Check the broadcast start sequence and YouTube’s stream health before changing the source file.
- The Control Room preview is correct, but viewers miss the opening: Check when the stream is made public and what a viewer joining later actually sees. A viewer joining after the opening is underway is different from the broadcast itself trimming the start.
- The live broadcast is correct but the replay is not: Compare the live viewing and replay separately. The cited encoder guidance does not establish the cause of a replay-only discrepancy.
For a YouTube broadcast, start the video before going public
Make sure the intended content is already playing before the public go-live point. As general workflow context, an older OBS-to-YouTube guide describes starting the encoder, checking the Live Control Room preview, and then pressing Go Live; current interface details may differ. Use the current YouTube Studio controls shown in your account rather than relying on old button names. OBS Project’s older YouTube streaming guide
- Start the OBS stream while the video is at the point you intend viewers to see first.
- Check the Live Control Room preview and confirm that both picture and audio are present and at the right point.
- Only then make the broadcast public or use the available Go Live control. Compare the public stream against the preview.
- For a test, note whether the missing interval starts at encoder startup, at the public go-live point, or after viewers join. That distinction narrows the problem without assuming 4K is responsible.
Check OBS and YouTube stream health
During a representative test, watch OBS’s dropped-frame and encoding indicators, and check stream health in YouTube Live Control Room. YouTube recommends testing before going live and monitoring stream health. If OBS cannot sustain the workload, its troubleshooting guidance recommends reducing output resolution or frame rate and testing again. A lower-resolution or lower-frame-rate test can help isolate a performance problem; it is not a guaranteed fix for a start-time skip.

- If OBS reports dropped frames, investigate the connection and ingest path rather than assuming the source file is missing frames.
- If OBS reports encoding overload, reduce output resolution or frame rate for a comparison test, then see whether the opening is still lost.
- If OBS indicators are stable but YouTube reports a stream-health issue, use the specific warning in Live Control Room to guide the next test.
- If indicators and stream health are normal, preserve the log and compare the OBS preview, Control Room preview, public stream, and replay to locate the first stage where the skip appears.
OBS notes that YouTube transcodes live streams, including the source feed, and that consistent keyframe intervals help quality-selection transitions. Transcoding and quality selection are relevant to playback quality, but the cited OBS guidance does not identify either as a cause of an opening trim. OBS Project: Transcodes / Transcoding
Verify the 4K/60 settings, but do not treat them as a diagnosis
YouTube supports live ingestion up to 60 fps and lists a 4K/2160p 60 fps profile. Its current encoder recommendations include these settings:
Rank #2
- 【SIMPLE, POWERFUL, COMPACT】- Easily play videos, photos, and music files from USB drives, hard drives, and SD cards. Simple and intuitive to use with no complicated settings. Takes up very little space - it’s smaller than a deck of playing cards!

- 【TRIGGER SENSOR INPUT】- Ability to loop one video continuously and play a different video when triggered by an optional push-button or motion sensor. Build an interactive digital signage display, art gallery or museum on-demand video player, or a Halloween special effect in just a few steps. Push-button and motion sensors sold separately.
- 【MEDIA FORMAT SUPPORT】 - Video: MP4, MKV, AVI, TS/TP, MOV, VOB, and M2TS files using H.265/HEVC, H.264/AVC, VC1, or MPEG2/4 codecs, up to 4096x2304p@30fps, 10-bit color, and 200mbps. Photos: JPG, JPEG, BMP, GIF (non-animated), PNG. Music: MP3, WMA, OGG, FLAC, APE, AAC
| Setting | YouTube recommendation for 2160p at 60 fps |
|---|---|
| H.264 bitrate | 35 Mbps recommended |
| AV1 or H.265 bitrate | 10–40 Mbps listed range |
| Keyframe interval | 2 seconds recommended; do not exceed 4 seconds |
These are YouTube’s published encoder recommendations, not evidence that a bitrate or keyframe setting caused a particular stream to skip its beginning. Verify what OBS is actually outputting and compare with a test; do not infer a cause from a setting alone. YouTube Help: Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions
Understand the 4K latency limitation
YouTube says the low-latency improvement option is unavailable for 4K/2160 streams; 4K streams are optimized for quality and set to normal latency. That means additional delay may affect when viewers see the live content. The guidance does not say normal latency trims the beginning of the video, and a lower-latency setting is not an available 4K workaround. YouTube’s encoder settings guidance

Do not assume the stream uses HLS
HLS is a specific YouTube ingest workflow, not a synonym for every OBS-to-YouTube stream. For HLS ingestion, Google recommends media segments of one to four seconds and documents playlist sequence behavior. Those HLS requirements do not prove that your stream uses HLS or that segment duration explains the missing opening. Check the ingest protocol before applying HLS-specific guidance. Google for Developers: Delivering Live YouTube Content via HLS
A focused troubleshooting sequence
- Locate the failure: Compare the OBS Media Source, OBS preview, Live Control Room preview, public live playback, and replay. Record which first differs and how many seconds are missing.
- Confirm the start point: For a broadcast, start the content before making the stream public; check the preview before using the current Go Live control.
- Monitor health: Observe OBS dropped-frame and encoding indicators and YouTube’s Live Control Room stream health during a test.
- Check output settings: Confirm the intended resolution and frame rate, and use YouTube’s recommended 2-second keyframe interval, not exceeding 4 seconds.
- Test workload: If OBS indicates encoding overload, test at a lower output resolution or frame rate. Compare the result rather than assuming this will fix an opening skip.
- Keep evidence: Note OBS version, encoder, ingest protocol, stream-health messages, exact missing duration, and where it first occurs. Without those details, no single cause or guaranteed fix can be established.
Or let it run in the cloud
