To secure a video stream, authenticate the viewer and verify their entitlement on a trusted server, then issue a short-lived, narrowly scoped signed credential. Make the CDN or video platform enforce it on every playback request—not just the HLS or DASH manifest—and prevent direct access to the origin. A signed URL is a bearer credential: anyone who obtains it can use it within its scope and validity window.
What signed URLs protect—and what they do not
A signed URL is a resource address accompanied by a signature and usually an expiry policy. The CDN or video service checks that signature before serving the requested resource. Your application must still decide who is allowed to watch: signing a URL does not authenticate the person who presents it or establish that they paid for access.
HLS and DASH playback is a sequence of HTTP requests. A player may fetch a manifest, media segments, alternate renditions, and later retries or range requests. If only the manifest is protected, subsequent requests may fail or remain exposed unless they also carry valid authorization. URL signing controls access to fetched media; it is not DRM and cannot prevent an authorized viewer from recording or redistributing decoded playback.
Choose a credential pattern for the player
There is no universally best choice. Match the authorization method to the number of media files, the players you support, and the CDN or hosted-video service you use.

Before choosing, check how many resources a session requests, whether each player supports cookies and redirects, whether URLs must be rewritten, how expiry interacts with refreshes and retries, how the origin is locked down, how keys are rotated, and whether optional IP or geographic restrictions are available.
Implement signed playback safely
- Put media behind an enforcing service. Use a CDN or hosted video service configured to require authorization. If object storage is the origin, block public direct access where feasible.
- Authorize in your application. Authenticate the viewer and check the relevant entitlement, such as a purchase or subscription, for the requested video.
- Sign on a trusted server. Create a token scoped to the necessary resource or resource family and give it an expiry. Keep private signing keys and API credentials out of browser and mobile client code.
- Deliver credentials securely. Return a signed URL or set the signed cookie over HTTPS. For a hosted service, enable its signed-playback requirement and follow its token-issuance process.
- Cover the entire playback path. Verify that authorization applies to the manifest, segments, alternate renditions, and any retry or range requests the player can make.
- Plan expiry and refresh. Set a lifetime that limits sharing while allowing for playback, clock differences, buffering, and reconnects. Provide a way for an entitled viewer to refresh credentials if a session outlasts the token.
- Test allowed and denied cases. Test normal playback, unauthorized access, expired and modified credentials, direct-origin requests, and refresh behavior in the actual browser and native players you support.
Provider-specific considerations
Amazon CloudFront
AWS describes a flow in which the application decides whether the viewer is entitled, creates a signed URL, and CloudFront validates its signature and policy. CloudFront offers canned and custom policies; custom policies can include a not-before time and an IP range as well as expiry. AWS lists RSA 2048 and ECDSA 256 keys for signed URLs and cookies. AWS recommends signed cookies when granting access to multiple restricted files, explicitly including HLS video files; signed URLs suit individual files or clients that do not support cookies. Consider origin access control so viewers cannot bypass CloudFront and request an S3 object directly. CloudFront checks expiry on each HTTP request, so a later range request can fail even if an earlier request began before expiry. Include required query parameters before signing: AWS says adding parameters afterward can cause a 403 response. See CloudFront private content overview.
Cloudflare Stream
Cloudflare states that, by default, anyone with a video ID can view a Stream video. Enabling requireSignedURLs prevents public-ID playback and requires a signed token; the token can be used with HLS and DASH manifest URLs. Cloudflare documents that calling its token endpoint without a body returns a token expiring in one hour, with no other restrictions or download access. Custom claims can change expiry and access restrictions, and the downloadable option can enable MP4 or audio download URLs. These are Cloudflare-specific behaviors, so verify current details in its Stream security documentation, displayed as last updated May 7, 2026. Cloudflare’s documentation says: “By default, videos on Stream can be viewed by anyone with just a video id.”

Google Cloud CDN and Media CDN
Google Cloud CDN signed URLs are time-limited and usable by anyone who possesses them. A URLPrefix policy can cover multiple URLs. Google describes signed cookies for HLS and DASH because signing every segment and rendition URL per viewer can burden an application and increase origin load; cookies can authorize a URL prefix and expiry without rewriting each manifest URL. Consult the Cloud CDN signed URL guide and Cloud CDN content access control guidance.
Google recommends HTTPS for signed URLs and secure transport when distributing them. Anyone with a signing key can create accepted signed URLs or cookies until that key is deleted. Media CDN’s guidance also accounts for clock synchronization and network retries: it says to set timestamps no less than one minute into the future or no less than the length of the video stream, whichever is greater. Confirm current service-specific syntax and behavior in the Media CDN signed requests documentation.

Common failures and how to prevent them
- The player loads a manifest but playback fails or exposes media. The manifest may be protected while segments or alternate renditions are not authorized. Apply the mechanism to every requested resource, using cookies or a supported prefix policy when appropriate.
- Private content is still reachable by a direct link. The origin may allow public requests that bypass the CDN. Restrict origin access and test the origin address independently.
- Users can forge credentials. A signing key embedded in client-side code can be extracted. Move signing to a trusted backend or managed signing service and rotate compromised keys.
- A copied link keeps working. A bearer URL can be used by anyone who receives it until expiry or revocation, subject to its policy. Use an appropriately short lifetime and avoid exposing tokens in logs or other unnecessary locations.
- Playback stops during a long session or reconnect. A later segment, range, or retry request may arrive after expiry. Implement credential refresh and test buffering, reconnects, and client clock differences.
- A valid-looking URL returns an error. Changing a signed path or query string can invalidate its signature. Sign the exact resource and required parameters in the format the provider expects.
- Signed access is mistaken for copy protection. Signing governs who can fetch media; it does not stop an authorized viewer from recording or redistributing decoded playback. Do not treat it as DRM.
