1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesYouTube’s 4K/2160p at 60 fps target is clear; a guaranteed direct VLC-to-YouTube playlist workflow is not. VLC documents playlist sequencing and stream-output pipelines, but its documented playlist example uses HTTP and does not establish RTMP/RTMPS compatibility with YouTube. Use the settings below as the ingest target, then verify the full playlist in YouTube Live Control Room before relying on it.
What you can—and cannot—verify with VLC
VLC’s Desktop User Documentation 3.0 explains how to assign successive inputs to a broadcast channel: VLC moves to the next input when the current one ends. Its example uses sout-keep to keep streaming across item changes. That demonstrates playlist sequencing mechanics, not a tested 4K video stream to YouTube.
VLC’s stream-output overview describes pipelines built from modules such as transcode, gather and std. VLC can process files it can read and save or stream output over a network, but the cited examples do not show YouTube RTMP/RTMPS output. An HTTP playlist example is not interchangeable with YouTube’s ingest protocol.
Therefore, do not treat an untested VLC command or configuration as a proven way to publish a 4K60 playlist directly to YouTube. Compatibility depends on the exact VLC build and configuration; validate it with a controlled test.

YouTube’s 4K60 live-stream settings
YouTube’s encoder guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS ingest and H.264, H.265 (HEVC) or AV1 video. It recommends constant bitrate (CBR), supports frame rates up to 60 fps, and recommends a two-second keyframe interval; the interval must not exceed four seconds. At 2160p/60, YouTube’s recommended incoming bitrates are:
| Codec | Minimum bitrate | Recommended bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| AV1 or H.265 (HEVC) | 10 Mbps | 35 Mbps |
| H.264 | 14 Mbps | 50 Mbps |
These are YouTube’s encoder recommendations, not a guarantee that a source file, computer or connection can sustain them. Test upload capacity under the conditions you will use, and leave room for network variation and other traffic. YouTube recommends RTMPS where available.

YouTube transcodes live streams into formats for viewers, but that does not prove that the incoming feed is 2160p60. Check the resolution and frame rate detected in Live Control Room. For 4K, use normal latency: YouTube says low-latency and ultra-low-latency modes do not support 4K.
Prepare and test the playlist before going live
- Enable YouTube Live early. First-time activation can take up to 24 hours. Create the stream in Live Control Room and keep its stream key private. Do not share or publish the key.
- Inspect every source file. Check resolution, frame rate, video and audio codecs, and whether audio continues cleanly from one item to the next. Mixed formats may need transcoding; VLC documents transcoding as a pipeline stage, but the documented material here does not establish a successful 4K60 YouTube configuration.
- Set the YouTube-bound encoder. Choose a supported codec, CBR, the bitrate appropriate to that codec, and a two-second keyframe interval. Use RTMPS if available. Ensure the system can encode and send the stream continuously at the selected settings.
- Run a complete private or unlisted test. Test the whole sequence, including transitions and audio, not just one clip. Watch Live Control Room for detected resolution, frame rate and stream health. A successful start alone is not proof that the stream is arriving as 2160p60.
- Change the workflow if the test fails. If direct VLC output cannot be verified on your installation, use an encoder or bridging application with independently documented YouTube ingest and playlist support. Then repeat the test and confirm the detected output. The cited documentation does not establish a specific compatible bridge or a winning VLC workflow.
Common problems and what to check
- Live Control Room does not show 2160p60: Check the detected ingest status rather than assuming YouTube’s viewer-side transcoding means the input is 4K60. Recheck the source properties and the encoder output settings.
- The stream stops or breaks between playlist items: VLC documents
sout-keepfor keeping a broadcast stream from breaking when an item ends. Its example establishes sequencing mechanics only; retest the entire YouTube-bound pipeline after any change. - The stream starts, but output is unstable: Compare sustained upload capacity with the selected incoming bitrate, reduce competing network traffic, and monitor stream health. A speed test and short representative test can reveal problems that a file inspection cannot.
- One item has different picture or sound: Check each file’s resolution, frame rate, codec and audio continuity. A mixed-format playlist may require transcoding, so test transitions and verify the received stream rather than relying on the playlist’s first item.
- RTMP/RTMPS output from VLC is uncertain: The cited VLC pages do not verify the complete direct path to YouTube. Do not assume an HTTP example proves YouTube compatibility; test the exact installed build or use a separately documented ingest workflow.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep a pre-recorded YouTube stream running without leaving VLC or a computer on at home, StreamNeo is a cloud alternative: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops uploaded videos from the cloud, not a live camera feed.
