YouTube Says Audio Format Is Unsupported Over RTMP: FFmpeg Fix

Inspect the audio FFmpeg sends to YouTube, replace incompatible audio copying with AAC encoding, set the right sample rate and channels, and test the output in Live Control Room.

If YouTube Live reports that your audio format is unsupported over RTMP, first inspect the audio FFmpeg is actually sending. If your command uses -c:a copy, it may be passing through an input codec YouTube does not accept for RTMP/RTMPS. Encode the outgoing audio as AAC, set the sample rate and channel count for your intended stereo or 5.1 mix, then verify the output and test it in YouTube Live Control Room.

What YouTube accepts over RTMP/RTMPS

YouTube’s live encoder guidance lists AAC and MP3 as supported audio codecs for RTMP/RTMPS. For 5.1 surround over those protocols, YouTube specifies AAC only. Its recommended settings are 44.1 kHz and 128 Kbps for stereo, or 48 kHz and 384 Kbps for 5.1 surround. These are YouTube recommendations, not guarantees that a particular input or command will work. See YouTube’s live encoder settings guidance.

That makes transcoding the most direct software fix when the outgoing audio codec is unsupported: have FFmpeg encode audio to AAC instead of copying the source audio unchanged. The exact repair depends on your input, desired channel layout, installed FFmpeg build, and complete publishing command.

Inspect the audio FFmpeg sends

Before changing settings, identify the source audio codec, sample rate, and channel layout. For a local media file, inspect it with:

ffprobe -hide_banner -i input-file

In the output, find the audio stream and note its codec, sample rate, and channel layout. If FFmpeg is reading from a capture device or another live input, inspect the input stream and your command’s output settings; the source properties alone do not prove what reaches YouTube.

Next, check the output portion of your FFmpeg command. An option such as -c:a copy copies audio rather than encoding it. If the copied codec is not supported for your RTMP/RTMPS output, change the output audio settings to encode a supported codec. FFmpeg documents audio output options including -c:a for codec selection, -ar for sample rate, and -ac for channel count; see the FFmpeg mailing-list excerpt of audio output options. Check your installed FFmpeg version and available encoders before relying on a particular encoder name.

Set AAC output for stereo or 5.1

The following are output-option fragments, not complete publishing commands. Add them in the correct position for the output in your existing FFmpeg command; options placed against the wrong input or output may not have the intended effect.

Stereo output

For an intended stereo stream, the audio portion can use an AAC encoder, a 44.1 kHz sample rate, two channels, and YouTube’s recommended 128 Kbps audio bitrate:

  • FOR LAPTOPS AND DESKTOPS THAT NEED AN AUDIO PORT BACK - Adds a headphone and mic port to a laptop, desktop, or mini PC whose onboard jack has failed or was never there. 5.1 surround output

For a 5.1 stream, use AAC, retain the intended 5.1 channel layout, and use YouTube’s recommended 48 kHz and 384 Kbps settings:

-c:a aac -ar 48000 -ac 6 -b:a 384k

-ac 6 requests six channels; it does not by itself ensure that the input is mapped into the correct 5.1 speaker layout. Confirm that the source channels and FFmpeg mapping represent the surround mix you intend to send. If the input is stereo, setting six channels does not create genuine 5.1 audio.

FFmpeg command syntax and encoder availability vary by build, and the full command also depends on video settings, input type, and the RTMP endpoint. Do not paste either fragment as a universal complete command. Preserve your existing video and publishing configuration while changing and verifying the audio output.

Verify the output and test in YouTube

  1. Run the adjusted command in a safe test stream or other controlled setup and inspect the outgoing audio stream. Confirm that it is AAC and that the sample rate and channel count match the stereo or 5.1 output you intend.
  2. Check that the audio bitrate is appropriate for YouTube’s recommendation for that channel format: 128 Kbps for stereo or 384 Kbps for 5.1.
  3. Before an event, test with audio and video similar to the planned stream. YouTube recommends testing ahead of time and monitoring stream health and messages in Live Control Room. Follow its encoder setup guidance and use the stream-health feedback to identify remaining problems.

If AAC output is confirmed but YouTube still reports a problem, inspect whether the audio stream is present and whether its channel layout and output mapping are valid. A malformed or missing stream, channel-layout mismatch, or another command or configuration issue may require separate diagnosis; the warning alone does not identify which one occurred.

When HLS may be an alternative

If you specifically need an audio codec outside YouTube’s RTMP/RTMPS choices, HLS may be an alternative ingestion workflow. YouTube’s HLS guidance lists AAC, AC3, and EAC3 audio, but HLS has higher latency because it sends video in segments and requires HLS-specific transport and segment setup. See YouTube’s HLS stream setup guidance. If transcoding to AAC resolves the RTMP audio issue, switching protocols is not necessary.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is to keep a pre-recorded YouTube stream running rather than troubleshoot and maintain a local FFmpeg setup, StreamNeo runs uploaded videos or playlists from the cloud. Upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it streams the upload as made up to 4K 60fps at one price per slot, can automatically recover if YouTube drops the stream, and the first day is free with no card.
