What a custom YouTube stream key does
A stream key is the credential your encoder uses to send a feed to YouTube. YouTube’s documented reason to create a custom key is to reuse the same key for future streams. It is an option in Live Control Room, not a paid add-on or a requirement for ordinary streaming. YouTube Help: Manage live stream settings
Changing the key type is separate from choosing a connection protocol. A custom key can be used with the stream URL and protocol configured for your encoder.
Choose whether to keep automatic settings or create a custom key

A custom key does not inherently improve stream quality. Choose manual settings only when you have a reason to set resolution yourself and have configured your encoder to send a compatible feed. Create and select a custom stream key
- Open Live Control Room. Sign in to YouTube Studio and select Create > Go Live.
- Open the stream controls. Select the Stream tab.
- Start creating a key. Under Select stream key, choose Create new stream key.
- Set the options. Enter the preferred settings. If manual resolution is your goal, turn on Turn on manual settings under Stream Resolution. If not, leave automatic detection in place.
- Create and choose the key. Click Create, then select the newly created key from the stream key list.
- Update your encoder. Copy the selected key into the encoder’s Stream Key field. YouTube’s encoder setup guidance is at Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
Keep the stream key and stream URL in the right fields
The stream key and server URL are different values. The key identifies and authorizes the feed; the stream URL tells the encoder where to send it. Copy each value into its matching field in the encoder rather than pasting the key as the server address.
If you use RTMPS, copy the RTMPS stream URL separately from Live Control Room. YouTube notes that the interface may show the ordinary RTMP URL initially; select the lock icon to reveal the RTMPS option. YouTube recommends RTMPS encryption. Replace a key that fails or may be compromised
If the encoder will not start
YouTube’s live-stream troubleshooting guidance recommends getting a new stream key in Live Control Room and updating the encoder with it. Confirm that the encoder contains the currently selected key and the correct server URL in separate fields. See Troubleshoot your YouTube live stream.
If someone else may have the key
Reset the key from the Stream key section in Live Control Room, then replace the old value in every encoder that should continue streaming. YouTube says only channel owners and managers can reset a key; editors and viewers do not have that permission. Treat a reset as a credential change: an encoder still using the previous key must be updated.
