For a desk-based show, USB cameras and OBS may be enough; for an event with several HDMI cameras, a switcher can simplify camera changes. Network video such as NDI is another option when the cameras, software, and local network support it.
Choose a camera workflow
First check what outputs your cameras provide, how many feeds you need at once, and whether you need a preview monitor or physical switching controls. The right setup depends on the room, crew, computer capacity, network reliability, and budget—not simply on camera count.
| Workflow | How it works | Good fit | Main tradeoff |
|---|---|---|---|
| USB cameras with software switching | Connect cameras to a computer and add them as sources in production software such as OBS. | Podcasts, online classes, tutorials, and small studios. | Several cameras may share a USB controller, competing for bandwidth and computer resources even when plugged into different ports. |
| HDMI cameras with a hardware switcher | Connect camera HDMI outputs to a switcher, then send its selected program feed to the computer or streaming destination. | Conferences, churches, stage productions, and live events. | Requires additional hardware, cabling, and setup time. |
| IP or NDI cameras | Send camera feeds over a local network to compatible production software or hardware. | Flexible layouts where the network and gear support the workflow. | Network performance can affect reliability; verify compatibility and test the network before relying on it. |
A capture card and a switcher do related but different jobs. A capture card brings a camera’s HDMI signal into a computer workflow; a switcher selects among HDMI inputs and can send the chosen program feed onward. You do not automatically need both: choose based on whether you want to switch cameras in software or on dedicated hardware. The OBSBOT guide names capture cards and the Blackmagic ATEM Mini Pro as examples, not universal requirements (OBSBOT multi-camera setup guide).
Plan the angles and match the cameras
Give each camera a distinct job
For a three-camera production, a useful starting arrangement is a wide safety view, a medium presenter shot, and a close or detail shot. A wide view gives you a fallback if another angle is blocked or unusable; the other views should add meaning rather than repeat nearly the same composition.

Make cuts look consistent
- Match frame rate and aspect ratio across cameras where practical.
- Set exposure and white balance so a cut does not cause an obvious brightness or color shift.
- Use a resolution appropriate to the final stream. If you are streaming at 1080p, you do not need every camera to capture in 4K solely for consistency.
- Check that each camera can output a signal your capture card or switcher accepts.
Connect the cameras and build the production
- Connect the chosen sources. Add USB cameras directly to compatible production software; route HDMI cameras through capture cards or a switcher; or connect supported IP cameras to the same local network and add them in compatible software or hardware.
- Check capacity before adding more feeds. With USB cameras, separate physical ports may still share one controller. If feeds stutter or disappear, reduce competing USB load or use a different connection path.
- Name and preview every feed. Use clear labels such as “Wide,” “Medium,” and “Close.” Preview/program monitoring or a multiview display helps you inspect the next shot before sending it to viewers.
- Create useful scenes and switching controls. Common layouts include a full-screen camera, picture-in-picture, split-screen, and cuts between wide and close views. In OBS, scenes can be switched with hotkeys; a mouse, keyboard, Stream Deck, remote, or hardware switcher may also suit the production.
- Choose an operator workflow. Decide who is watching the program and preview feeds, who triggers camera changes, and how the operator will recover if an angle fails. For a solo show, keep controls simple and retain a usable wide shot.
OBS Studio can receive sources, arrange scenes, set stream output, and switch scenes. Its system requirements page cautions that meeting baseline compatibility does not guarantee a computer can stream or record at a chosen resolution, frame rate, encoder setting, and scene complexity (OBS Studio system requirements).
Set audio, stream output, and platform settings
Use one deliberate main audio path
Choose a primary microphone or mixer input and disable camera microphones you are not using. Mixing several camera microphones unintentionally can create uneven levels, echo, or distracting room sound. Check lip sync on every angle; a simple clap test recorded or monitored across the production can reveal whether audio arrives ahead of or behind the picture. If needed, apply an audio sync offset in the production chain.

Match output to the destination and connection
Set output resolution, frame rate, and bitrate based on the streaming service’s current limits, your available upload speed, and the computer’s ability to encode the scene. More frames per second can increase system load: OBS specifically cautions that 60 fps can tax a system more than 30 fps. OBS’s overview gives 6000 kbps as an example Twitch video bitrate maximum on that guide page; it is Twitch-specific, not a universal setting, so check the current rules for your destination rather than copying it automatically (OBS Studio overview).
Enter the destination’s stream key in the streaming software or hardware interface that sends the program feed. Treat the key as a password: do not show it in a screen share or public recording. Before the event, confirm that the selected destination accepts your output settings and that the internet connection can sustain the stream.

Rehearse the full broadcast before going live
- Confirm every camera is detected and displays the intended angle.
- Switch through every scene and check framing, focus, exposure, white balance, and transitions.
- Listen to the primary microphone and verify audio sync on each camera angle.
- Check that graphics, screen shares, and any picture-in-picture layouts appear as intended.
- Run a test stream or private rehearsal using the same computer, network, and output settings planned for the event.
- Have a fallback angle and a plan for a camera, capture card, switcher, or network feed failing.
Testing scenes and stream operation before the first live event is part of OBS’s guidance. Treat the whole production—not just each camera—as the thing to test.
Know the limits of app-specific camera support
Compatibility can depend on app version, device, adapter, and network configuration. For example, Switcher Studio’s FAQ says NDI camera support is beta as of version 13.17.0 and requires a compatible iOS or macOS production device, an NDI camera with NDI mode enabled, and devices on the same Wi-Fi network and frequency band (2.4, 5, or 6 GHz). Its multicamera product page describes support for up to nine camera angles; these are vendor feature claims, so check the current app documentation and device compatibility before planning a production around them (Switcher Studio FAQ; Switcher Studio multicamera features).

Troubleshoot common multi-camera problems
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to try |
|---|---|---|
| A USB camera stutters, freezes, or vanishes | Multiple devices may be competing for USB bandwidth or system resources. | Disconnect unnecessary USB devices, try a different controller or connection path, and test the production with fewer active sources. |
| One camera looks noticeably warmer, darker, or more washed out | Exposure or white balance differs between cameras. | Match those settings manually where possible, then preview cuts under the actual event lighting. |
| Viewers hear echo or uneven room sound | Several camera microphones may be active alongside the intended microphone. | Keep one main audio source and disable unused camera audio; listen again in the complete stream path. |
| Speech does not align with the picture | Audio and video have different processing delays. | Run a clap test and adjust the audio sync offset in the production chain if necessary. |
| The picture drops frames or the computer struggles | The resolution, frame rate, encoder settings, or scene complexity may exceed what the system can handle. | Test at the intended settings, simplify scenes or lower output demands, and check the computer against the actual workload rather than baseline compatibility alone. |
| An NDI camera is not found | The app, camera mode, device compatibility, or local network requirements may not be met. | Check the app’s current version-specific requirements, enable NDI mode on the camera, and verify the devices share a supported Wi-Fi network and band. |
