Its key setup choice is whether each output takes a direct input feed or the Scaler path. Select Scaler when you need format conversion; direct routing bypasses the scaler. Before buying or deploying one, check its serial family and confirm that your source and destination formats match the supported conversion path.
What the Decimator MD-HX does
The MD-HX converts between HDMI and 3G/HD/SD-SDI and can scale and convert frame rates. It can route outputs directly from an input or from its scaler, making it useful when a production chain needs conversion rather than simple connector adaptation. Decimator lists 245 input formats and 41 output formats across supported conversion paths, including 204 VESA formats on HDMI and 2K support. These counts do not mean every input can be converted to every output: check the exact source timing, destination timing, frame rate, and route.

The unit has four SDI outputs, an LCD and buttons for local control, and USB for control and firmware updates. Audio-pair rearrangement is configurable. Decimator describes the enclosure as a solid, robust aluminum case and says the unit has no fan; those are manufacturer statements, not independent test findings. The brochure gives dimensions of 79.5 Ă— 123 Ă— 29.5 mm and a power input range of +5 V to +32 V DC. Packaging can vary, so confirm the included power supply and cables with the seller.
Check the hardware revision before relying on V2 features
Decimator distinguishes newer units with serial numbers beginning CLD, CLE, or CLF from legacy CLA, CLB, and CLC units. The expanded V2 feature set is listed for the newer serial families; do not assume an older unit has it without checking its hardware and firmware.

Decimator calls its scaler proprietary and claims improved sharpness, reduced aliasing, and better image quality than conventional polyphase approaches. That is a vendor performance claim; no independent comparative bench test is established here.
How to set up an MD-HX for HDMI-to-SDI or SDI-to-HDMI conversion
The basic menu behavior below follows Decimator’s Hardware Manual FV1.5, copyright 2015–2023. That manual predates the current V2 feature set, so menu details for newer firmware may differ. On startup, the display opens at Input Status, showing detected SDI and HDMI inputs and the scaler/DUC output format. The top-level menus are Input Status, Control, Scaling, Audio, and Setup. Left and right move between menus; ENTER opens a menu or toggles a parameter; BACK returns to the prior level.

- Four compact bidirectional converters supporting up to 1080p60 resolution
- HDMI and 3G/HD/SD-SDI inputs and outputs for versatile device compatibility
- Automatic input detection and multiple routing modes for flexible setups
- Secure locking connections to protect against accidental cable removal
- Four high-speed HDMI cables supporting 4K at 60Hz and 18 Gbps bandwidth
- Connect the source. Connect the source to HDMI IN or SDI IN. Connect the destination to the corresponding output, using suitable HDMI or SDI cabling for the signal chain.
- Choose the output source. In Control, set SDI OUT SOURCE and/or HDMI OUT SOURCE to SDI IN, HDMI IN, or Scaler. Set each output independently as needed. For example, to convert an HDMI source to SDI, set SDI OUT SOURCE to Scaler if the desired SDI format requires scaling or frame-rate conversion. A direct HDMI IN route is not the scaler path.
- Configure scaling when required. Open Scaling and set the scaler source, reference, output format, and aspect controls for the job. Check that the chosen output format is compatible with the destination and the input-to-output conversion path.
- Check signal status. Return to Input Status and verify that the expected inputs are detected and the scaler/DUC output format is the one required by the chain.
- Allow settings to save. The FV1.5 manual says changes apply immediately and are saved after 10 seconds. Do not disconnect power during that save interval.
For a straightforward cross-conversion route, the essential decision is the output source: choose the input directly when you want a pass-through route, or choose Scaler when the output needs the MD-HX’s format conversion. The manual describes the source selection for firmware version 1.5; check the documentation supplied for the specific unit when using current V2 firmware.
Compatibility checks for a production chain
Compare the exact signal at every boundary rather than relying on a broad label such as “HDMI” or “3G-SDI.” The manufacturer lists support for 3G level A and B and conversion between them on its product page; the current brochure also identifies 3G-A and 3G-B formats. Confirm the required level and direction for your equipment.

- Record the source resolution, frame rate, and interface before connecting the chain.
- Confirm the destination accepts the selected output format and frame rate.
- Check whether the route requires scaling or frame-rate conversion; a direct input assignment does not use the scaler.
- If the signal is 3G-SDI, verify whether the source and destination require level A or level B.
- If you need 2K or computer VESA timings, identify the serial family and verify the exact timing rather than assuming universal HDMI compatibility.
- If overlays, patterns, or tone generation matter, verify that the serial begins CLD, CLE, or CLF and confirm the installed firmware.
Common setup problems and fixes
The output is missing or shows the wrong format
Check that the source is connected to the correct input and appears on Input Status. Then inspect the relevant output-source setting in Control. If conversion is required, select Scaler and check the scaler output format in Scaling. Also verify that the destination supports the chosen format and frame rate.
The signal passes through but is not being converted
The output may be assigned directly to SDI IN or HDMI IN. In Control, change that output’s source to Scaler, then configure the scaler’s source and output format in Scaling.

A required VESA, 2K, overlay, or test-pattern option is absent
Check the serial family and firmware. Decimator assigns the expanded V2 feature set to CLD, CLE, and CLF units; legacy CLA, CLB, and CLC serials should not be presumed to support it.
Changes do not persist after a power cycle
After changing a parameter, leave the unit powered for at least the manual’s 10-second save interval. The FV1.5 manual warns against powering down during this period.

Decimator’s product page lists a US$295 MSRP. That is the manufacturer’s stated suggested retail price, not a verified current street price or availability quote. Confirm the exact serial family, included accessories, and current stock with the seller before purchase. The manufacturer provides a reseller directory.
The MD-HX is worth considering when a compact unit needs to bridge HDMI and SDI formats, route outputs independently, and scale or convert frame rates. Its format counts are broad, but they are not a substitute for checking the exact timing and route in your chain. For basic pass-through or conversion, make the routing choice deliberately; for revision-specific monitoring and test features, verify the serial family first.
Or let it run in the cloud
The MD-HX is a physical video-signal converter, not a service for keeping a YouTube channel live. If your separate goal is to keep uploaded video playing as a 24/7 YouTube live stream, StreamNeo runs that playback from the cloud: upload a recording or playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it streams the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. Start a free StreamNeo day.
