To troubleshoot OBS Studio crashes, change one thing at a time: record when the crash occurs, try OBS in Safe Mode to check for third-party extensions, temporarily close apps that may conflict with OBS, then test compatibility and workload. These checks can narrow the cause, but none alone proves why OBS crashed.
First, note when OBS crashes
Before changing settings, record your operating system, OBS version, and the action immediately before the crash. Timing can help distinguish a startup problem from one tied to a particular source, scene, or output task.
- Does OBS crash while starting, opening a source, switching scenes, starting a stream or recording, or only after running for a while?
- Have you installed plugins, scripts, or websockets, or recently changed them?
- Do you use overlays, GPU monitoring displays, or other capture or recording applications?
Use the same action to reproduce the problem after each diagnostic change. Avoid changing several things at once; otherwise, a change in behavior is harder to interpret.
Start OBS in Safe Mode
OBS documents a --safe-mode launch parameter that starts OBS with third-party plugins, scripts, and websockets disabled. Use the official operating-system-specific method in OBS Project’s Launch Parameters guide rather than guessing at a platform-specific command.

- Privacy with a Slide: The integrated webcam cover makes it easy to get total, reliable privacy when you're not on a video call
- Built-In Mic: The built-in microphone lets others hear you clearly during video calls
- Easy Plug-And-Play: The Brio 101 works with most video calling platforms, including Microsoft Teams, Zoom and Google Meet—no hassle; it just works
- Close OBS if it is still open.
- Follow the guide’s instructions to launch OBS with
--safe-mode. - Repeat the action that normally triggers the crash.
If the crash stops or changes in Safe Mode, investigate third-party extensions; this result does not identify a particular plugin, script, or websocket. Re-enable or test extensions selectively, following their own installation guidance, and repeat the same action after each change. If Safe Mode makes no difference, continue with the other checks rather than assuming an extension is responsible.
Check for conflicting applications
Some applications hook graphics functions and can interfere with OBS. OBS’s Known Application Conflicts page names examples such as on-screen displays, monitoring tools, overlays, and other capture or recording applications.

- Temporarily exit those applications, including any that may run in the background.
- Open OBS and repeat the same action that triggered the crash.
- If behavior changes, reopen the applications one at a time and retest to identify whether the change tracks with a particular program.
Closing an application is a diagnostic test, not proof that it caused the crash. Restore applications you need after testing.
Check system compatibility and laptop GPU selection
Compare your operating system and graphics setup with the current information in OBS Project’s System Requirements. Meeting listed requirements does not guarantee a computer can handle every streaming or recording workload, and a mismatch by itself does not establish the cause of a crash. The page and other official guidance may change; confirm current support details for your OS and OBS version.

For a laptop crash tied to capture, especially display capture on a dual-GPU system, consult OBS Project’s Laptop Troubleshooting guide. GPU selection guidance is relevant to those capture-specific cases, not a universal explanation for OBS crashes. Follow the guide’s applicable OS and OBS-version conditions.
Test whether scene or output load is a factor
OBS uses GPU resources to composite and render scenes. If the crash occurs with a demanding scene, while starting output, or during recording or streaming, test a simpler scene and more modest output settings. OBS’s Encoding Performance Troubleshooting guide describes reducing GPU demand and scene complexity for performance overload.

- Keep the scene and output settings unchanged while you finish the Safe Mode and conflicting-application checks.
- For a separate workload test, simplify the scene and reduce demanding elements.
- If appropriate, try more modest output settings, then repeat the same action and note whether the crash behavior changes.
A lighter workload may help distinguish a load-related problem, but it is not a confirmed fix or diagnosis for an unexplained crash. Change one workload factor at a time where practical.
