To customize a stream with overlays, choose the visuals you need, create or select an overlay, then add it to your broadcasting software as a source. In OBS Studio, a common route is to paste a StreamElements overlay URL into a Browser source; Streamlabs Desktop also supports image sources, while its documented OBS routes include a plugin or scene-collection import. Check the layout in the scene before going live so it does not cover important content.
What a stream overlay does
An overlay is a visual element layered over a broadcast. StreamElements describes examples such as alerts, labels, goals, and chat; its editor composes these elements, which the broadcasting software renders. StreamElements documentation puts it this way: “Overlays are the visuals layered on top of your stream — alerts, labels, goals, chat — composed in the StreamElements Overlay Editor and rendered in your broadcast software via a single browser source.” StreamElements documentation
Decide which elements help viewers follow the stream, then choose a workflow that fits both your broadcasting software and the overlay format. A URL-based overlay is added differently from image files or a scene collection.
Add a StreamElements overlay to OBS Studio
- Copy the overlay URL. Open the overlay in the StreamElements dashboard or editor and copy its URL. StreamElements documents this as the starting point for adding an overlay to OBS. StreamElements’ OBS setup guide
- Add a Browser source. In OBS, select the scene you want to customize. In the Sources panel, choose the option to add a Browser source.
- Paste the URL. In the Browser source properties, paste the overlay URL.
- Set the dimensions. Set the browser source to the stream canvas dimensions for a full-canvas overlay. StreamElements advises that the overlay size usually match the stream resolution; choose a smaller size if you want to reposition the overlay within the broadcasting software.
- Position and check it. Arrange the source in the scene and inspect the visible elements. Make sure alerts, labels, goals, or chat do not obscure gameplay, a camera view, or other information viewers need to see.
Choose a Streamlabs workflow
Streamlabs documents several ways to add overlays. Which one to use depends on whether you work in Streamlabs Desktop or OBS and whether your overlay is an image, a plugin-based overlay, or a scene collection. These routes are not evidence that every overlay format transfers identically; follow the current instructions for the specific provider and software combination.

Use image files in Streamlabs Desktop
Choose an overlay from the Streamlabs library or add image files as sources within the relevant scenes in Streamlabs Desktop. Arrange the sources in the scene and check their placement before broadcasting.
Use the Streamlabs OBS plugin
Streamlabs also documents a plugin workflow for selecting and installing an overlay. Use the provider’s current instructions for the plugin and the overlay you choose.

Import a scene collection into OBS
If you use OBS without the plugin, Streamlabs documents importing a Streamlabs scene collection into OBS. A scene collection is a different route from adding a single Browser source or individual image files, so check the imported scenes and sources in OBS before relying on them live.
See Streamlabs’ overlay instructions for its documented options.

Choose the right setup for your stream
- Start with your broadcasting software. For OBS, the StreamElements Browser source method is documented. For Streamlabs Desktop, Streamlabs documents library overlays and image sources; its other documented options include a plugin and scene-collection import for OBS.
- Check the format you received. An overlay URL belongs in a Browser source; image assets are added as image sources. A scene collection is imported rather than treated as a single overlay URL.
- Choose the size you need. Use canvas-sized dimensions for a full-canvas overlay, or a smaller overlay when you want to position it within the scene.
- Keep the layout purposeful. Add only elements useful to this broadcast, and inspect how they sit over the content before going live.
The official guides describe setup workflows, not a universally best provider or comparative performance. They do not establish that one route improves viewer engagement or uses less computer power than another.
