Best Free VTuber Software: Live2D and 3D Options Compared

The right free VTuber software depends on your avatar format: VTube Studio for Live2D tracking, VRoid Studio to create a 3D VRM model, and compatible apps such as Warudo for 3D animation—with licensing and free-streaming conditions to check.

There is no single best free VTuber program for every setup. For an existing Live2D Cubism avatar, start with VTube Studio; to create a 3D VRM avatar, use VRoid Studio, then choose a separate app that can animate it. Warudo is one 3D animation and streaming option, but its free streaming terms are conditional. Choose by model format, tracking method, platform, and licensing—not by the word “free” alone.

Which free VTuber software fits your workflow?

VTuber software covers different jobs: making an avatar, tracking its movement, animating it in real time, and composing a stream. One app may not do all of them, and an avatar file made for one format will not necessarily work in another app.

Software Best fit Free-use summary Main limitation
VTube Studio Tracking and animating an existing Live2D Cubism model Desktop app is free. Mobile apps are free with optional PRO. Does not load VRoid/VRM models directly; some mobile-to-PC use and logo removal require PRO, and webcam mode has a watermark.
VRoid Studio Creating and customizing a 3D avatar and exporting a VRM model Free to use, with creator-set terms for models you make. It creates avatars; it is not by itself a complete tracking and streaming workflow.
Warudo 3D animation, scenes, motion capture, and livestreaming Free for non-streaming use; free streaming is allowed only under specified eligibility terms. Corporate streaming requires Warudo Pro, and individual free-streaming eligibility is conditional.

This is a sourced shortlist, not a ranking based on hands-on performance tests or a census of every available app. Check current compatibility and terms before building a workflow around a particular model or program.

Choose by avatar format and task

If you already have a Live2D model

VTube Studio is the direct fit for animating a Live2D Cubism avatar. Its manual states that it supports Live2D models only and does not support VRoid/VRM models. If you have a VRM file, do not expect to load it directly into VTube Studio.

If you want to make a 3D avatar

VRoid Studio lets you create and customize a 3D character and export it as a VRM model for compatible apps. You will still need an application that supports that model format and supplies the tracking, animation, and streaming features you want. Warudo is one option identified here for 3D animation and streaming. Check the current supported formats of any app before you commit to a workflow.

If you are mixing tools

VTube Studio’s documentation describes using its tracking with VSeeFace, but this does not mean VTube Studio can load a VRM model. Confirm the precise integration and supported formats in the relevant apps’ current documentation.

VTube Studio: free Live2D tracking, with limits to understand

VTube Studio’s desktop app is free, and its FAQ says the free version can load your own models. The webcam mode displays a watermark. If you use a phone to track and send data to a PC, streaming beyond five minutes requires PRO; removing the logo also requires PRO. Mobile apps are free with optional PRO.

The manual recommends a webcam resolution of 1280×720 or higher for good eye and blink tracking, and describes 15–30 FPS as sufficient. These are setup recommendations, not a guarantee of tracking quality: lighting, camera placement, device capability, network configuration, and software versions can affect results. The documentation ranks tracking quality as iOS above webcam above Android; that is the vendor’s guidance, not an independent comparative test.

DenchiSoft describes desktop availability for Windows and macOS, with feature limitations on macOS; webcam tracking on macOS is described as highly experimental. Check the current requirements for your operating system and tracking device before installing.

VRoid Studio: make a 3D avatar and check its rights

VRoid Studio is free, and its official page says models created in the app can be used on compatible services subject to the terms you specify for that model. Those terms can address commercial use and credit requirements. Exporting a VRM file does not itself provide tracking or make the file compatible with every animation app.

Separate rules apply to third-party model data, including assets from pixiv or other creators. Read the terms attached to each model, clothing item, texture, or accessory before using it, especially if you plan to monetize content. A creator’s permissions for one asset do not automatically grant rights to another.

Warudo: a 3D option whose free streaming is conditional

Warudo supports 3D avatar animation, scene control, motion-capture workflows, and livestreaming. Its handbook says non-streaming use can be free. Free streaming is not unconditional: the stated terms require the user to exclusively own the VTuber intellectual property and platform accounts and to have no contractual obligation to stream a specified number of hours per week, except for a contract directly with a major livestreaming platform. Corporate users may evaluate and test the Steam version, but must purchase Warudo Pro to stream.

Read the Warudo Handbook for the applicable terms and confirm that your circumstances qualify before streaming. “Free to use” for non-streaming activity should not be read as permission for every streaming or corporate use.

Check commercial-use terms before monetizing

Software access and rights to the avatar are separate questions. VTube Studio’s FAQ says individuals and smaller VTuber agencies or companies may use it commercially without PRO or DLC, while larger companies need additional licensing. This is vendor guidance, not legal advice; check with DenchiSoft if your organization’s status is unclear.

  • Confirm the app’s license for your use, including commercial streaming and company-size conditions.
  • Check the model creator’s terms for monetization, credit, redistribution, and permitted edits.
  • Check the terms for every third-party asset used in the model, rather than assuming the avatar’s overall license covers them.
  • For Warudo, verify both IP/account ownership and any contractual streaming obligations against the handbook’s free-streaming conditions.

A practical setup path

For a Live2D avatar

  1. Identify the model as Live2D Cubism and review its creator’s usage terms.
  2. Install VTube Studio for your operating system after checking its current requirements and macOS limitations, if relevant.
  3. Choose webcam tracking if you have a compatible camera, or a supported iPhone or Android device for phone tracking.
  4. If using a webcam, aim for at least 1280×720 resolution and 15–30 FPS as the manual’s general eye/blink tracking guidance; provide even lighting and position the camera so your face is visible.
  5. Test tracking and confirm the model responds as intended before adding it to a livestream scene. For phone-to-PC use, account for the free-tier five-minute limit.

For a 3D avatar

  1. Create or customize the avatar in VRoid Studio and export it as a VRM file.
  2. Read the model and asset licenses, including any third-party clothing, textures, or accessories.
  3. Select an animation app that explicitly supports the VRM workflow you need. Warudo is one documented 3D option; compare its terms with your intended use.
  4. Set up the app’s tracking and scene workflow, then test the avatar in the target streaming setup before going live.

Or let it run in the cloud

For a YouTube channel that should keep playing uploaded videos around the clock, StreamNeo is a separate cloud service, not VTuber avatar or tracking software. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay running at home; it streams your upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo or start the free day.
