Video resolution is the frame’s pixel dimensions; aspect ratio is its width-to-height shape. For example, 1920 × 1080 is a 1080p frame with a 16:9 landscape ratio. They answer different questions, so choose dimensions for image detail and a ratio that suits your footage and where it will be watched.

Resolution and aspect ratio: what each term means

Resolution is pixel dimensions

A video frame is made of pixels. State its resolution as width × height: 1920 × 1080 means 1,920 pixels across and 1,080 pixels high. Labels such as 720p and 1080p conventionally refer to progressive video and name the vertical pixel count; the full dimensions make the frame size explicit.

Aspect ratio is frame shape

Aspect ratio expresses the relationship between a frame’s width and height. A 16:9 frame is widescreen landscape, 9:16 is portrait, and 1:1 is square. Ratio alone does not tell you the resolution: 1280 × 720 and 1920 × 1080 are both 16:9, but the latter contains more pixels.

Common video resolution sizes

YouTube’s published table gives these encode dimensions for its default 16:9 computer-player format. These are platform examples, not universal requirements for every camera, display, file, or video standard.

YouTube says its player adapts to each video’s dimensions and the viewer’s device. Its standard computer-player ratio is 16:9, but other shapes—including 9:16—may be shown with padding in some desktop contexts. YouTube advises uploaders not to bake padding or black bars into the video, because they can interfere with dynamic player sizing. See YouTube Help’s video resolution and aspect ratio guidance and its advice to avoid adding padding or black bars directly to a video.

What size is 1080p video?

1080p is conventionally 1920 × 1080 pixels in the 16:9 format. The frame contains 2,073,600 pixels (about 2.1 million). The “p” refers to progressive video; it is not the width of the image.

What is the aspect ratio of 1920 × 1080?

1920 × 1080 has a 16:9 aspect ratio: divide both dimensions by 120 to get 16:9. It is a widescreen landscape frame. The dimensions specify its resolution, while 16:9 specifies its shape.

What is the difference between 4K and 1080p?

In the common UHD-versus-Full-HD comparison, 4K UHD is 3840 × 2160 and 1080p is 1920 × 1080. UHD has twice the width and twice the height, or four times as many pixels: 8,294,400 versus 2,073,600. More pixels do not by themselves guarantee that viewers will perceive better quality; the source footage, encoding, display, and viewing conditions also matter.

Is 4K 3840 × 2160 or 4096 × 2160?

Both dimensions are called 4K in different contexts. UHD/consumer 4K is 3840 × 2160 with a 16:9 ratio. DCI 4K is 4096 × 2160 with a wider 17:9 ratio. Vimeo’s compression guidance distinguishes the two examples. When the exact frame matters, state the dimensions and whether you mean UHD or DCI rather than writing only “4K.” Vimeo’s video and audio compression guidelines.

How to choose a resolution and aspect ratio

  1. Start with the destination. Check the platform or device’s published format guidance. For YouTube’s computer player, 16:9 is standard, but the player can adapt to other video shapes.
  2. Match the frame shape to the footage and presentation. Use landscape for widescreen footage, portrait for a vertical composition, or square when that is the intended frame. A platform may display a nonstandard shape with padding in some contexts.
  3. Use dimensions your source can support. Upscaling creates a larger pixel grid; it cannot restore detail that was not captured. Choose a target that fits the original footage and the intended edit.
  4. Account for practical costs. Higher-resolution files can affect storage, upload time, bandwidth, and processing. The cited guidance establishes dimensions and platform behavior, not one universally best resolution or a viewer-perceived quality threshold.
  5. Export the intended frame without embedded bars. Keep the video’s actual ratio and let the player handle display adaptation where possible. YouTube says not to add padding or black bars directly to the video.

For creators who keep a YouTube channel live

Resolution and aspect ratio describe the video frame; they do not determine how a stream is kept running. If you use uploaded videos for an always-on YouTube channel, StreamNeo runs the loop in the cloud after you upload a recording or playlist and add your YouTube stream key. Its flat per-slot price is the same for any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps, and the first day is free with no card. It streams to YouTube only.

Or let it run in the cloud

Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, then go live. Your computer and home connection do not have to stay on; StreamNeo loops the uploaded video in the cloud and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The uploaded video streams as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot, with no re-encode or quality tiers. The first day is free with no card. Monthly: $9.99 per month. Start your free day with StreamNeo.
