It adds information that helps a receiver identify, order, time, and monitor media—but it does not guarantee that packets arrive, arrive on time, or arrive in order. RTCP, RTP’s companion control protocol, provides delivery reports and participant information.
What does RTP stand for?
RTP stands for Real-time Transport Protocol. The IETF describes it as a protocol providing end-to-end transport functions for applications sending real-time data, including audio, video, and simulation data over multicast or unicast networks (RFC 3550, July 2003).
Despite the phrase “RTP streaming,” RTP is not a streaming service, an audio or video codec, or a complete media-delivery system. It is a framework for carrying real-time data and associated timing and identification information. Other parts of an application determine how media is encoded, how sessions are arranged, and how network problems are handled.
How does RTP streaming work?
- The sender encodes and divides media. An application encodes continuous audio or video, then divides it into units suitable for transmission. The exact encoding and packetization depend on the application and media format.
- The sender adds RTP information. Each RTP packet has a header and media payload. Header fields identify the payload type and source, include a sequence number, and provide a timestamp based on the media clock.
- Packets travel over a network. RTP is commonly carried over UDP, but it is designed not to be limited to one underlying transport or network layer.
- The receiver interprets and presents the media. Using the RTP profile and payload-format definition, the receiver can identify the media type, use sequence numbers to detect packet order or gaps, and use timestamps to time playback and synchronize streams. It then decodes the payload for presentation.
The sequence number and timestamp give the receiver useful information; they do not repair an unreliable network. Reordering, buffering, retransmission, error concealment, and other responses depend on the application, profile, and any extensions in use.

What do RTP’s header fields tell the receiver?
- Payload type: Identifies how the packet’s payload should be interpreted under the applicable profile and payload-format definition. RTP itself does not define every audio or video codec.
- Sequence number: Helps identify packet order and detect gaps, which may indicate missing packets.
- Timestamp: Relates the packet to the media clock so the receiver can schedule playback and coordinate media timing.
- Source information: Helps identify the source of a stream, particularly where multiple participants or streams are involved.
What is the difference between RTP and RTCP?
RTP carries the media payload. RTCP, the companion control protocol, carries control information such as delivery-monitoring reports and participant information. It helps participants assess how media is being delivered; it is not where the audio or video itself is carried. The two protocols serve related but distinct roles (RFC 3550).
Does RTP guarantee delivery or prevent buffering?
No. RTP does not guarantee packet delivery, in-order arrival, timely arrival, or quality of service, and it does not reserve network resources. A receiver can use packet sequence and timing information to respond to conditions, but RTP alone cannot ensure that packets arrive or that playback is uninterrupted. The outcome depends on the network and on the mechanisms implemented by the application and its surrounding protocols.

Is RTP the same as UDP or RTSP?
RTP and UDP
UDP is a common transport for RTP, but RTP is not UDP and is not defined as UDP-only. RTP provides media-related transport functions; the underlying transport carries its packets.
RTP and RTSP
RTP is not RTSP (Real-Time Streaming Protocol). Their names are similar and both appear in media contexts, but they are different protocols. RTP’s role is carrying real-time media packets; do not treat the acronyms as interchangeable.

How does RTP fit into WebRTC?
WebRTC requires RTP as its media transport protocol and requires RTCP as well. Its RTP profile combines RTP/AVP, RTCP feedback support, and secure RTP profile provisions (RFC 8834, January 2021). RTP is therefore a core media layer in WebRTC, not the whole system: signaling, security, and network traversal involve additional mechanisms. WebRTC transport specifications also address interactions with intermediaries such as firewalls, relays, and NAT boxes (RFC 8835, January 2021).
Does RTP apply only to video streaming?
No. RTP can carry real-time audio, video, and other data, including simulation data. It is used as a media-transport building block in a range of real-time applications; its scope is broader than watching prerecorded video online.

Is RTP relevant to keeping a YouTube channel live?
