1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsYouTube does not publish a universal minimum CPU, GPU, RAM, or storage specification for streaming from a PC. The computer you need depends on what it must do—run a game, capture video, compose overlays, and encode—while YouTube’s bitrate guidance describes the stream sent to its servers, not a PC benchmark. Choose a workflow and output target, check your real upload capacity, then test the complete setup before going live.
What PC do you need to stream on YouTube?
There is no single YouTube-mandated PC build. YouTube’s live-streaming guidance specifies ingest formats and settings, but does not set minimum CPU, GPU, RAM, or storage requirements. A bitrate such as 17 Mbps is the encoded video data rate sent to YouTube; it does not mean your computer needs a particular processor or that your internet plan should be exactly that speed.
Instead, match the computer to its workload. Direct gameplay may require the PC to run the game and encode the stream at the same time. A webcam stream is a simpler workload. An encoder setup using external video or audio sources may need compatible input hardware and software. A capture card is relevant when bringing a console or another external source into the PC; it is not required for direct PC gameplay.
Choose by source and output
- Webcam or presentation: A computer and webcam with an encoder or YouTube’s webcam workflow may be enough. Add a microphone if the built-in audio is not suitable.
- PC gameplay: The computer must handle the game, capture, and encoding together. Test the actual game and scene; a setup that works in a static desktop test may struggle during demanding gameplay.
- Console or external camera: Use an encoder workflow and suitable capture hardware to bring the source into the computer. Confirm that the capture device and encoder software support the format you intend to use.
YouTube notes that expensive equipment is not necessary to start. Its guidance does not establish a universal hardware build, so use a representative test rather than buying parts based on an assumed YouTube minimum.

How much upload speed do you need?
Use upload capacity, not download speed, to plan a live stream. YouTube recommends leaving 20% bandwidth headroom above the total stream bitrate. For example, a 17 Mbps video stream needs at least 21.25 Mbps of available upload capacity to preserve that margin, before accounting for other traffic or a backup stream. This is a planning calculation from YouTube’s 20% recommendation, not a guarantee that a connection with that measured speed will be stable.
Check outbound bandwidth under conditions similar to your broadcast. Other devices, cloud backups, network congestion, and a backup ingest stream can consume capacity. If you use backup ingestion, include its bitrate in your total. Prefer a reliable wired connection where practical, and test the connection at the time and location you plan to stream.

What bitrate should you use?
The following are YouTube Help’s minimum and recommended video ingest bitrates, in Mbps. They are encoder output settings, not guaranteed internet plan speeds or PC performance requirements. The recommended bitrate varies by codec, resolution, and frame rate; select the column for the codec you actually use.
| Output | AV1/H.265 minimum | AV1/H.265 recommended | H.264 minimum | H.264 recommended |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2160p60 | 10 Mbps | 35 Mbps | 14 Mbps | 50 Mbps |
| 2160p30 | 8 Mbps | 30 Mbps | 11 Mbps | 42 Mbps |
| 1440p60 | 6 Mbps | 24 Mbps | 8 Mbps | 34 Mbps |
| 1440p30 | 5 Mbps | 15 Mbps | 7 Mbps | 21 Mbps |
| 1080p60 | 4 Mbps | 12 Mbps | 6 Mbps | 17 Mbps |
| 1080p30 | 4 Mbps | 10 Mbps | 5 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
| 720p60 | 2 Mbps | 6 Mbps | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 720p30 | 2 Mbps | 6 Mbps | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 480p30 | 0.3 Mbps | 3 Mbps | 0.4 Mbps | 4 Mbps |
| 360p30 | 0.3 Mbps | 3 Mbps | 0.4 Mbps | 4 Mbps |
These values come from YouTube Help’s live encoder settings and bitrate guidance. The chosen encoder, software version, and hardware affect which codecs are available to you. A supported codec does not by itself show that a particular PC can encode it smoothly.

Which encoder settings matter?
For RTMP/RTMPS ingestion, YouTube lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 video, with stream frame rates up to 60 fps. Set a constant bitrate (CBR) and a two-second keyframe interval; YouTube says not to exceed four seconds. YouTube recommends RTMPS, which encrypts the stream between your encoder and its ingest server.
- Video codec: Select a codec supported by both your encoder and the YouTube ingest workflow. If you quote or set a bitrate, use the matching codec column in the table.
- Bitrate mode: CBR.
- Keyframes: Every two seconds; do not exceed four seconds.
- Frame rate: No more than 60 fps. Choose a target your source, encoder, and upload connection can sustain.
- Audio: YouTube lists AAC or MP3 for RTMP/RTMPS. AAC is required for 5.1 surround over RTMP/RTMPS.
- SDR: YouTube’s guidance specifies Rec. 709 and 8-bit video.
- HDR: YouTube specifies 10-bit video and HEVC; AV1 is not supported for HDR in the cited live encoder settings.
Read YouTube’s current encoder settings guidance when configuring a particular software version, especially if its codec or HDR options differ.

How to prepare and test your PC stream
- Choose the workflow. Decide whether you are streaming a webcam, direct PC gameplay, or an external source. For gameplay, plan for the game and encoder to run at once; for external sources, verify that your input hardware is compatible.
- Choose a realistic output. Set the resolution and frame rate you want to deliver, then choose a codec and its corresponding recommended bitrate from the table. Confirm your encoder offers the codec and format.
- Configure the encoder. Use CBR, a two-second keyframe interval (never more than four seconds), a supported audio codec, and RTMPS where available. Enter your YouTube stream key in the encoder without sharing it publicly.
- Check upload capacity. Test outbound speed and reserve YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom above total stream bitrate. Account for other network use and any backup stream.
- Run a representative test. Include motion and audio like the real broadcast. Check the Live Control Room preview, listen for audio problems, and monitor stream health. A static screen is not a meaningful test for a fast-moving game or video.
- Allow setup time. YouTube recommends configuring the encoder at least two hours before an event and starting it at least 15 minutes beforehand.

For a documentary channel, make sure you have the rights to every video, music track, image, and other material in the stream. A technically successful stream does not establish that the content is cleared for use or eligible for monetization. YouTube’s account eligibility and enforcement rules are separate from encoder settings.
Troubleshooting common stream problems
- YouTube reports unstable or insufficient bitrate: Check upload rather than download speed, reduce the encoder bitrate or output target, pause other uploads, and retest with headroom. If using backup ingestion, count its bitrate too.
- The stream stutters when gameplay gets busy: The PC may be overloaded by running the game and encoding simultaneously. Test the actual game scene and lower the workload—such as the stream output target or game load—then repeat the test. YouTube does not publish a CPU/GPU minimum that can diagnose this for every game.
- Encoder settings are rejected or unavailable: Verify the selected codec, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, and keyframe interval against YouTube’s current encoder guidance and the options supported by your software and hardware.
- Video appears but audio is missing or wrong: Check the encoder’s audio input selection and confirm it is sending AAC or MP3 for RTMP/RTMPS. Test playback and monitoring before the event; use AAC for 5.1 surround.
- The stream key does not connect: Confirm you copied the current key into the intended encoder and selected the matching YouTube stream setup. Treat the key like a password; replace it if exposed.
- You cannot start a first live stream: Confirm channel verification and live-streaming eligibility, then allow for first-time activation, which YouTube says may take up to 24 hours.
